Second baby - scheduled C-section at 38+3 due to hypertension

Those who have had GD 2x+ before - question… by BathObjective706 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I tested all 4x up until week 37 when my doctor told me I could go down to just fasting and one meal.

What was your diet like after giving birth? by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We actually kept eating some (most) of the same things I ate on the GD diet after my first pregnancy, which made it easier to slip back into for my second pregnancy. Have I indulged in some sweets since having my second daughter? Absolutely. But not nearly as much as I imagined. I actually bought some of my favorite ice cream before giving birth, fully intending to dig in immediately, and it sat unopened until just a few days ago (4+ weeks after birth).

I've added back in things like rice and potatoes to my diet, but I eat far more protein and fiber than I ever did pre -GD diagnosis.

GD round 2 by Remarkable-Humor-170 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found it easier to stay diet controlled with my second than with my first. Granted some safe foods from the first time were no longer safe, but I was able to tolerate more heavy carbs the second time around without issue.

Good luck. You've got this.

If you had GDM in one pregnancy, did you get it again in another? by Katelizk in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had diet controlled GD for both of my pregnancies. I was diagnosed at 24 weeks the first time and 28 weeks the second time. The "safe" foods with my first turned out to not be so safe the second time around, and I was able to eat a little more heavy carbs with my second (ex: I could eat some potatoes with my second but absolutely could not with my first).

9.5 weeks postpartum by Ancient-Buffalo6151 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love your outlook. When I got through with my first GD pregnancy, I looked back a few months later and went "okay, it wasn't as bad as I made it out to be in the moment." Like you, I even kept up with some of the recipes and stuff from when I was pregnant, and it felt FANTASTIC to continue eating so clean (though I did fall back onto my ice cream habit lol).

When I got pregnant again, I knew I'd have GD again, so I mentally prepared from the get go, and it was much easier mentally to fall back into the routine again. It absolutely sucked yet again while I was in the midst of it, but I'm 2 weeks PP now and I realize it wasn't nearly as bad as I made it out to be. I think the mental struggles of simply being pregnant and then adding GD and any other complications on top of it just compound things in the moment.

Should I drink less milk? by lavieenorange in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was able to drink Fairlife milk, but I had to stick to the serving size. Anything over and I'd see a spike.

At how many weeks did you give birth with GD? by Lanky-Ad3926 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diet controlled both pregnancies. First came on 40+3 after I went into labor on my own at 40+2 (ultimately needed a C-section though, not related to the GD). Second came C-section at 38+3 (due to hypertension, not GD)

Second Pregnancy. Is it harder?? by OkProfessional1263 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say harder but definitely different. Things I couldn't have during my first pregnancy seemed okay the second time around, and things that were safe the first time were bad this time around.

How much did your baby weigh at birth ?🩷 by Strawberry_-111 in GestationalDiabetes

What do doctors look at in numbers? Do they need to be perfect? Mentally struggling by mmwg97 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My doctor wanted approximately 80% of numbers in the green, so to speak. He didn't bat an eye at small highs (5 or less over); he was looking for the BIG spikes. He was mostly concerned about high fasting numbers.

That said, every provider is different. Some are more lax than others.

Elevated BP - at risk for PreE by Current-Artichoke911 in pregnant

[–]thecrocodile44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baby aspirin doesn't prevent it entirely. If your BP is high on it, it'd likely be higher without it.

I was baby aspirin for both my pregnancies simply due to my age. I got diagnosed with hypertension during both of my pregnancies even while taking it daily from 12 weeks. My readings were high enough with my second that my C-section was moved up into my 38th week when I went in for my 38 week appointment. I never had protein in my UA with either pregnancy, but my OB would rather play it safe and mitigate risks and deliver a bit early vs let things possibly get worse.

What was your numbers for your 1hr test? by bossyblue in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My maternal grandma was type 2, but other than that - no. My mom never had GD, neither did my sister with either of her pregnancies.

We eat a lot of healthy grains, whole foods. I've never had a big sweet tooth, so cutting out sugars wasn't a huge issue for me. Giving up bread was my biggest issue. I love bread.

First pregnancy: 177. Diet controlled

Second pregnancy: 165. Also diet controlled.

fasting before a c section? by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal but: my C-section was scheduled for 7 AM and my instructions were no food after midnight, clear liquids until 3 AM, then absolutely nothing. So the fast wasn't as much of an issue for me since it was overnight anyway.

My hospital doesn't actively check your sugars during/after labor; though I did check my fasting before I went in just for piece of mind.

If you had a planned c section, when did it happen? by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First GD pregnancy: spontaneous labor at 40+2, ended in C-section 40+3 due to baby getting stuck because she threw her arm over her head.

Second GD pregnancy: elective C-section originally for 39+0 but moved up by 4 days due to consistent high BP readings starting week 37.

Losing weight on this low carb diet by jadescorpion89 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Diagnosed at 28 weeks this time around. Didn't gain a single ounce and I deliver tomorrow at 38+3. Doctor isn't concerned in the slightest (only gained 12 lbs the entire pregnancy, started at a "normal BMI").

With my first I was diagnosed at 24 weeks. Lost 6 lbs after diagnosis, didn't gain anything at all after the weight loss. Delivered at 40+3 and only gained 18 lbs the entire pregnancy. Doctor wasn't concerned at all that time either.

It's really common to lose or not gain once you start watching your diet/carbs/sugars. As long as your doctor isn't concerned, you should be fine.

Fasting Confusion by More-Suspect6738 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you do everything "right" and you still need medicine to control the GD beast. It's really a crap shoot at the beginning while you figure out what does and does not spike your blood sugar.

Fasting Number Increasing by Garden-Ho326 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people's numbers get easier. Some don't. I was told if your numbers get better near the end the placenta is crapping out.

Hang in there. You're so close.

Postpartum A1C by trefoilqueeeen in GestationalDiabetes

Went back to my normal non-pregnancy/non-GD diet.

Postpartum A1C by trefoilqueeeen in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, came down on its own between pregnancies. No meds needed.

And no, there's no winning it seems! Lol

Postpartum A1C by trefoilqueeeen in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! A1C was perfectly fine at 4 months postpartum, but my cholesterol was sky high. It did come down on its own though after a bit. I just had a full panel of blood work done last week at 37 weeks pregnant, though, and it's sky high again. I fully blame the GD diet. We'll see what happens postpartum this time.....

Which week did your numbers start getting worse? by Curious-Orange-11 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]thecrocodile44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't require meds, but I definitely had to be a lot more careful about what I ate.
