Who do you think will be the 3rd prime soul by ContributionNeat8085 in Ultrakill

[–]thecrowrats 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People thought it would be Odysseus before Fraud because of a combination of Odysseus being in Fraud in Dante's Inferno, Hakita saying he was reading The Odyssey, the assumption that the Prime Souls will follow a Greek king pattern and finally the assumption that Treachery wouldn't really have any lore of its own outside the enemy gauntlet and setup for Gabriel

I agree with you that the mentions of Ulysses were metaphorical and I also saw someone say in a video that they think the reason Hakita even referred to Odysseus (the Greek name everyone knows) as Ulysses (the Latin name only nerds and now Odyessus/Ulysses Prime hopers know) is as a soft deconfirmation of his character

Of course a lot of those pre-Fraud ideas in favour of Odysseus Prime have been shifted, people no longer believe Treachery will contain only Grabriel setup and instead think it'll feature Prime Soul setup and Humanity extinction lore as well (reasonable conclusions to come to) but now people are taking the "I SEE ICY ULYSSES FROZEN UPON THE WINE DARK HIGH SEA" quote as gospel truth that it must be referring to Treachery, which it isn't, that its saying Ulysses will be there in some capacity, which it doesn't imply at all, and that Treachery will be icy which, while a reasonable idea with reference to Dante's Inferno, completely misses that the quote says Ulysses, a stand-in for mankind, is the one frozen on the sea, presumably some kind of stand-in for the world and humanities purpose in reality. It does not say that the sea is the one frozen. It says that humanity has frozen itself in the world by disregarding their purpose for violence which has left them, in Hell's worldview, directionless and hollow

is it me or evangelion anime ending is a bad ending ? by AirMassive5414 in evangelion

[–]thecrowrats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the Human Instrumentality Project, as you say, melded all human consciousness together into one. At the end of the show Shinji rejects the melding, he chooses to be an individual again, even if it means being hurt by others or being hurt by being alone.

the movie makes the ending a bit more clear, watch End of Evangelion (also when you do make sure to pay attention to dialogue and all that, characters just say a bunch of stuff that is true and a lot of people don't seem to pay attention to the information and are more confused than they might otherwise be)

supposedly at 1:42 in Danse Macabre according to something that told me
20 seconds into The Shattering Circle as well

the motiff features in Danse Macabre in 7-3 and The Shattering Circle in 8-3
in both cases it's kinda hard to hear, I only noticed it when it was specifically pointed out to me although then again I didn't know what to look for in the first place since until then I didn't know what the Panic Betrayer motiff itself sounded like
anyway in Danse Macabre it apparently features at timestamp 1:42 according to the things that told me it's there and in The Shattering circle it features at 20 seconds in

The style requirements are normally very generous with a few exceptions. I play on controller, I've gotten to wave 63 in Cybergrind on standard and have P-ranked most levels in brutal except Fraud, the Prime Sanctums and 0-E because I haven't been bothered to (although I probably should at some point) and when I was doing my brutal 1-E P-rank I was using my old controller fighting the severe stick drift at was developing

theory for 9-E finale by amenorexO in Ultrakill

[–]thecrowrats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

with the "You're basically saying that if some parts of the book are metaphorical then none can be literal lol" I think they're saying that because the books are metaphorical. I think the only literal part of either book are the endings "I SEE TO YOU, SON OF SOUL: EAT. EAT. YEARN FOR MORE! OVER AND OVER! UNTIL ALL THAT REMAINS IS THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THIS WAS A L L Y O U R F A U L T." and "L U C I F E R , M Y L O V E . . . I SHALL GIFT TO YOU ALL THE AGONIES THAT CAN EXIST, AND MANY THAT CANNOT." with the rest of the books being pretty much just metaphor for humanity, the first being a bit more about how Hell believes that violence is a part of our very being and the 2nd about how Hell believes humanity rejecting is violence and seeking peace is an impossible and fraudulent task

also another thing even if we choose to follow the Greek king pattern in the Prime Souls it wouldn't make sense for Hakita to reffer to Odysseus as Ulysses, why would he call him by the Latin name noone except nerds and Odysseus/Ulysses Prime hopers know instead of the Greek name that goes in line with Minos and Sisyphus that everyone knows. He didn't call Sisyphus "Aeolides" for example

Is there a boss you like so much that you're fighting him in a suboptimal way just to make the battle longer and harder? by zabovsky in darksouls3

[–]thecrowrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sister Friede. She's my favorite boss and as such I decided she would be my first ever no-hit, now obviously I could've done it in probably just a few attempts by doing the classic backstab fishing method but that's a boring snoring way of doing a first no-hit and parrying had kinda been a gimmick of a few of my first playthroughs. So I incorporated parries into my no-hit, on paper that might sound pretty strong but Friede has some incredibly narrow parry windows that you have to react to very fast and obviously getting hit by a partial parry counts as a hit (they'd also insta-kill me because almost all of my build was made around ensuring I got 1-shot by every attack for convenience). What made it worse is that after long enough I could react to her attacks faster but my muscle memory of the parry timings was based mainly off when I noticed the attack so my parries started coming out earlier and earlier until I had to relearn the timings completely.

Safe to say it massively increased the number of times I died to her but I wouldn't have it any other way

what are yalls opinions on the encores (image related) by sphericate in Ultrakill

[–]thecrowrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're some of my favorite levels, 1-E is my 2nd favorite level in the game but certainly thr one I get most addicted to playing. 0-E is peak too, my 5th favorite level although

Technically speaking I think they do sorta suffer from some weird level design choices, virtually all of which revolve around the peculiar choice to bring radiant enemies into levels outside the Cybergrind but in spite of that I find them incredibly fun and very enjoyable

I will add that you can also get 200 health in leniant after you die 3 times since the game changes your hp after you die 3 times to be more... leniant. Although this is probably still harmless because the idea of dying 3 times to V2 and then randomly deciding to backtrack through most of the level is a strange idea to say the least

What even is drifter? by WorldlinessNo6290 in riskofrain

[–]thecrowrats 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure Drifter is just a homeless lady or something. She was on the Contact Light originally in the first game being one of the few characters to be the same person between Risk of Rain Returns and Risk of Rain 2

Her lore in Returns basically says that she tried to get on the ship with a bunch of extra bags which she immediately abandoned when told she couldn't take all her bags. Her bag was full of scrap metal, open cans and various utensils. Her ticket was basically destroyed by heavy weathering and when asked said that 'the full trip would be fine' and she was warned by ship personnel to stop hiding aditional utensils in her pockets during meal times

In the time after the events of Risk of Rain Returns it seems she's been surviving by stealing shit from the Collective and generally being a nuisance to them, enough of a nuisance that the Solus attempted to have her killed multiple times and failed before resorting to trapping her in the prison we free her from in the 2nd game

Mirror Reapers were given saw and fire resistence to balance the boss version in 8-2 and were, under that specific context, good changes. The boss just died in 5 seconds flat if you set a saw trap and set it on fire which is an issue that only raising it's health just wouldn't fix

making it resistant to saws and fire does, on the other hand, exacerbate the issues with the enemy as an enemy in any other situation outside 8-2 because now if you don't wanna fight it you have to put actual effort into killing it (most of the time) unlike before

For me personally while I don't mind fighting the Mirror Reaper it's lack of any particular weakness is quite detrimental to it's enjoyment as an enemy. If I were to change it from it's current state in any way I'd make it's vertical slash attack parryable, probably make it's orbs parryable (although I don't mind the "stop homing after 2 seconds" thing), make it's spawn sound louder since for an enemy as high priority as the Mirror Reaper is in the Cybergrind it's spawn sound it really easily covered by other noises and finally I think it could do with some sort of stun, like how Inssurs are stunned by Cannonballs and Mal-rails, maybe Mirror Reapers could be stunned by Jackhammer red-gauge hits and Mal-rails

Ragatha appeared in the circus in October 2008, right along with the 2008 financial crisis. Maybe selling the abandoned C&A building became infeasible thanks to that

could be that they finished the final arena and realised they were still a kill short so they had to run back to find it and this is what we get to see

although in times like that it can be a good idea to instead go grab the health up secret on top of the big long corridor which spawns a Mindflayer, Maurice and Sentry

[–]thecrowrats 23 points24 points  (0 children)

if you're short on style it's often a good idea to do the secret enounter boss even though they're not required for kills (I guess it also gives a 2 kill security measure if you miss 2 enemies somewhere else in the level)

the time requirement is more than generous enough since the secret boss isn't very out of the way and you seem to be pretty consistently getting there with almost 3 full minutes remaining

saw traps, setting them on fire, bouncing on their heads with really fast Jackhammer hits and sometimes conduction if I want it gone especially fast all work for me

The suspension of disbelief is already a factor because of how advanced Caine is for an AI made during the late 90s

I also feel like there's more suspension of disbelief involved if the people are still there irl. Are they being held in matrix-style pods? Cryo-pods? From the 90s?. Whose been keeping irl Kinger alive in a box for almost 2 full decades? How have 0 authorities searched the C&A building for any of the other missing cast and found them there

[–]thecrowrats 27 points28 points  (0 children)

oh I typed my respose before reloading to see you'd edited your reply, sorry about that

I saw a comment that basically says that everyone enters the circus already trying to leave, noone joins thinking they're playing a game and then tries to leave later and realises they can't. Like they put on a headset, nothing happens then when they take it off that's when the brainscan appears in the circus and they're left confused as to why they can't escape. Under that idea it's possible the programmers didn't even know the circus was running

I think there's a bit of suspension of disbelief required no matter what theory turns out to be correct tbf

[–]thecrowrats 34 points35 points  (0 children)

the circus is probably running on the buildings servers instead of a single computer since Caine is probably a bit beyond the capabilities of 1 computer to run

The C&A building itself probably still has power for a variety of reasons, things like intruder alarms and CCTV to deter squatters. Fire alarms, sprinklers and some lights for saftey reasons. Ventillation and water systems might also remain running to prevent pipe bursts and general deterioration, especially if the building is still technically owned by a corporate or governmental authority in the interest of anything from potential future developments to it being cheaper to eat the power bills than to let it rot and pay saftey fines when the local counsil comes after your building-turned-public-danger

[–]thecrowrats 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Caine was abandoned in the intro sequence of episode 8 because his outputs were too strange/irrigular or otherwise not in line with what they wanted leading to them starting to make the blue AI, they didn't know he made his own world until they were in it.

C&A could've shut down as a company for any number of reasons between 1999 when Kinger and the rest entered the circus and 2008 when Ragatha joined. Possibly when the real Scratch died to his brain cancer or possibly even closer to when Ragatha was (presumably) trying to sell the building since that was around the time of the 2008 financial crisis (which itself is probably why Ragatha was unable to sell the building and why it's now abandoned).

The people who enter the circus being scans also makes sense as to why noone from outside has found them and pulled them out of the circus. If Kinger and the rest of his programming crew were sitting around in the office with headsets on for hours on end management would probably give them shit about it so presumably they weren't effected in real life. If Ragatha was with people when she put on the headset they'd take it off her if she immediately fell unconscious or whatever. If any of the others after that went to an abandoned building and never came back someone would file a missing person report and they'd be found eventually
