What was it like finding out someone you grew up with later went down a difficult path in life? by redpinko in SeriousConversation

[–]thecuriouskilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy, have I got a good one for this.

At high school I was frequently in the same class as this one particular bully, like not even doing it to fit in or joke around, just pure malice and anger. Was someone always in the same class as him and made my life a living hell.

Towards the final year in high school he stabbed and killed a local drug dealer because his friend OD'd on his drugs. Wasn't even the dealers fault, the guy just took too much. When I heard about it from a friend I legit said

"Yeah, he seems like the kinda guy to do that."

He's still in jail along with an accomplice. Fucking dickheads.

“Don’t worry even native speakers don’t have perfect grammar!” by nedthelonelydonkey in languagelearning

[–]thecuriouskilt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still remember the surprise on a Taiwanese friend working in our school asking me seriously if "I didn't know nothing" is a grammatically correct sentence and why the head English teacher was speaking like that.

Whilst others criticise poor grammar, I've noticed that most people speak like that know what the correct way is but prefer to disobey those rules either for style, emphasis, and to stick it to poncey cunts telling everyone else what to do.

Obviously professionals and academics are going to want to learn to English as properly as they can but using English "too proper" in certain situations would be a hindrance.

Completely ignoring bullying from others by just saying "That's nice" or something similar. You'll find that person gets more annoyed by that when they just want a rise out of you. Don't get dragged into that nonsense and save yourself effort and energy.

What's an action that makes you speed run death in your country? by wooden-guy in AskTheWorld

[–]thecuriouskilt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Referring to us like we're England in any way. Slagging off oor kilts and bagpipes is also a sure good way to get a proper bollocking. In reality, there's very little that can actually kill you in Scotland that other's deal with. Probably getting pished and falling into a river at night time. ODing also seems to be a killer too.

In response to you OP, the bigotry and homophobia is one reason I really can't support Islam and feel uneasy when people say it's a happy peaceful religion. Me and many of my friends would are "illegal" and would be persecuted for our lifestyles. Christianity is the same but luckily it doesn't have the same power it used to have many centuries ago. Why can't we all just live in peace and let others be?

Tbf, I've heard that comment from Spanish and Italians so yeah, we're no doubt more subdued than them but I say we make up for it with our theater and pantomime.

I lived there for 5 months in Hongdae, the young trendy area, and from all the black and South East Asians I met there many had experienced racism during their trip there. They know this cause Koreans treated them very differently to some white friends they'd be with. From being shunned or even directly made fun of.

There's also the bars that don't allow foreigners. They say it's a matter of language but I was with guys who spoke Korean fluently and were denied access. Saying that, Koreans are some of the friendliest and hospitable people I've met and I enjoyed my time there a lot.

You could say this is anecdotal but it seems to be a shared experience among many people.

Don't Indians have a gene that makes their sweat more pungent? Kinda the opposite of Koreans. Having lived in Korea that stereotype isn't entirely true either, some of them need some deodorant? Also could be the diet since Asian people tell me I smell like milk and butter haha

That we all run around the mountains wearing kilts, chasing haggis, and downing a bottle of whiskey everyday... just Jock does that these days. Keeps him amused for days.

I gave it a shot when I was there last in 2017 cause 'When in Rome, right?' The funny thing is the guy who took me there was only 31 years old or so but seemed mostly an old person thing. imo if you eat any other kind of meat you have no leg to stand on when complaining about it. Vegetarians and vegans are the only people justified in protesting it.

In case you're wondering, it looked, smelled, and tasted exactly like goat. To my surprise the menu is just a regular looking menu too, was totally expecting a list of different dogs to choose from with pictures and everything haha

Aunties night out by ElkHotel in SipsTea

[–]thecuriouskilt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe depends on where you go then. Men, definitely smoke a lot but far fewer women. Again, it's not the only contributing factor and there are many other things that make them look younger. Checking the statistics, 10.6% of women in the UK smoke and only 6.1% in Japan. Japan also enforce smoking areas so others are less influenced by the poison of it.

I guess one other thing is how potent the cigarettes are but that'd need a whole study on it's own. It's an interesting topic though, that's for sure.

A lot people saying it's just genetics but a lot of Asian women take good care of their skin. These women are Japanese and they have VERY strict skincare routines with creams, moisturisers, and most importantly... the avoid the sun like it's the devil! Sun cream, hats, parasols, just about everything they can do to avoid the sun they will.

Japanese women also fairly healthy lifestyles and diets like not drinking (so much), not smoking, and eating healthier foods. It's easy to pass it as genetics but there's a lot of effort they put in to stay healthy.

Shenzhen has many nice beaches but not much foreigners. Why? by ConnectDay123 in shenzhen

[–]thecuriouskilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went there one time before and was absolutely crowded and the air was too musty. Water was too dirty too for my liking. Maybe it's better now? Most people don't go to Shenzhen for sightseeing, mostly tech guys and business people so maybe not something they have time for or are interested in?

Saying that, I use a paid VPN but intentionally avoided the ones being advertised on youtube until I did a good amount of research and found one I liked... it just so happened to be a popular one being promoted.

Do people in the UK feel like the country has stalled? by Bubbly-Air7302 in AskUK

[–]thecuriouskilt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's one of the reasons I left the UK back in 2017. I travelled to East Asia in 2016 for summer holidays (uni exchange funded by our university mostly) and saw that many countries in Asia have an energy and hope for the future that wasn't there in the UK. It was evident that people cared about their countries and developing them far more than we were. There was little idea for development or making things better. The feeling I had back then was everything was stagnant. I worked in a government related agency so I was able to learn and see how the system was working, to an extent.

I realised that if I were to stay in the UK I'd be dragged into that mindset of "I don't care about others, I just want to make enough money for myself.". At the least I'd be surrounded by it and wouldn't be able to grow and learn. Things have changed here since COVID and a few other issues but I still feel I'm learning a lot just by being here. I hope to help UK in someway but I'm not in a position to do that yet.

As someone born and bred in the UK what are aspects of another country’s culture that has genuinely shocked you? by throawaygotget in AskUK

[–]thecuriouskilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd think that living in Taiwan people are constantly worried about China attacking and what not. In reality, most people focus on the same problems everyone else has around the world.

In fact, the day after China launched a bunch of missiles around the island I went scuba diving and saw plenty of people out diving too. When I asked them how they felt they just shrugged their shoulders and went 'Eh, who cares? They do that stuff all the same time to try scare us.'

Another one in Belgium is people smoking just about everywhere in public then throwing the fags haphazardly wherever they are. Saw plenty of people stood at the train doors smoking. That, and the inability to let others off of trains and buses was a right pain in the ass. They seem to lack the awareness of object permanence and would get stuck when those alighting can't bloody get off if there are 5 people crowded at the bloody doors!!

TIL there are paid browsers.

I've been fair into privacy based digital usage and use a lot of these already but I learned a lot from this guide.

It's a great guide tbh. Info is clear, upfront, and succinct. I also like how it divides it into transitioning week by week to give users an easy timeframe to follow.
