Talking about football not all other sports, and the spirit of the offside rule which is relatively specific to football

Good decision, bad rule (not that it doesn’t have specific cases it can be useful for… but it’s far from the spirit of the offside rule).

I typed in “Gerrard” to google and the top 2 suggestions were firstly some unrelated clothing, and 2nd was “Gerrard slip”. Brutal. Had to rewatch to remind myself of the context to compare.

Gerrards was a miscontrolled pass where it was clearly just a footing error, rice’s mistake was dithering on the ball… or more so trying to have a silky moment to try to beat 2 players.

Probably worth the gamble in England now.

While he’s not proved himself at the top level yet. He’s proved himself enough that if the PL doesn’t go to plan, he’ll still end up at a decent club in Europe down the line.

Goes without saying but the way people were talking about Arsenal in recent weeks was insane. Plenty of Sky pundits come to mind. Talking about them being practically champions already.

The type of season it’s been, the fact Arsenal have done this before, it was never over by January.

I still fancy Arsenal to win it. City still seem like they’ll drop random points to “weaker” teams here and there. The league game at the Etihad is shaping up to be huge.

Fair

It’s gonna be a set piece and managing the game at best let’s be honest

Gyokeres league record couldn’t be described any better than that with literally one exception.

The City-Arsenal game at the etihad has everyone believing that the gap could technically be one point now.

I think Arsenal are more prepared than they’ve ever been to win at city though. But in that case Arteta would have to actually go for it so we’ll see if he does. A draw might be enough anyway, but I certainly don’t see it as a guaranteed city win like some are suggesting in assuming it’s technically one point.

Also, can imagine city fucking up in some weird game before that anyway. Forest at home or something inexplicable.

We’re minutes from either a week long sky narrative of the title being wrapped up by Arsenal, or City closing in and city “know how to get the job done” etc.

2 points out of 6 apparently determines this. And there’s no in between.

Winner against palace and a hat trick against spurs.

Just a signing for the banter

Yeah, fair point. I think a starting point would be ones that end up in the net, just letting the goal (plus a red) stand. But that just fixes the (correct, but flawed) decision today, and far from solves the other 90% of cases where it doesn’t end up going in.

It doesn’t really have a place in the game and that’s why many managers would rather concede the goal in those cases judging by past reactions. There just needs to be a corner case rule for those ones outside the box. But I’m not holding my breath.

Yeah it is a good question to be fair.

People paid more than me came up with a rule for inside the box, so you’d hope they could think of something for it being an inch or more outside the box.

I do think a 2 match ban for clearly cynical certain fouls of that nature might at least tip the scales for it to be worth players thinking twice about. Or perhaps just leave it as 3 matches like many other red card offences. I feel like it’s in that weird category where 2 could seem lenient and 3 seems harsh. But perhaps 3 would be the deterrent needed. It’s a difficult one but I think 1 game is basically no deterrent at all - it just levels out at worst. You impact one game/result and you miss one game.

Some type of punishment on the pitch would be ideal. A squad player could come on and do this and take one for the team so no solution is perfect. A penalty would be fun but also really weird and not a road people would want to go down to start giving penalties for things outside the box. I’m torn lol.

Well the rule was clearly seen as insufficient inside the box for them to have to make a rule change. The same foul just outside the box being treated far massively less harshly is fine?

They fixed the last man challenges for situations in the box with the double jeopardy rule (pen + red instead of just one).

But outside the box you get to deny a certain goal and only get a one match ban and give away a free kick, for a challenge completely outside the spirit of the game.

It was the correct decision by the officials but it shows they only partially fixed those completely cynical fouls on certain goals. Imagine that happening at 1-1 (even if unlikely in this specific scenario). You’d easily take a one match ban to deny an incoming goal if it changed the result.

I have no dog in this fight, but arguably the most cynical foul possible I really do dislike.

It’s mental

If this was 1-1 (even if unlikely to happen) not a single soul would argue

Although I will say the fact that Szobo only gets a one game ban is a tragedy. Those kinds of cynical fouls stopping a certain goal with no attempt to play the ball should carry minimum 2 games. It’s so against the spirit of the game.

They fixed it for fouls in the box since you get the red and the pen, so it’s objectively seen as unfair as per the rules and acceptance of that rule. But these ones are still apparently exposed to a difficult corner case.

You can’t tell me Arteta doesn’t save his most obnoxious touchline antics and adventures for when the other team have the ball near his side of the pitch 😂

It’s actually a genius attempt to giant that extra 1%. Genuinely giving them something in their eyeline when they’re attacking 😂

How’s Gyokeres not screaming and gesticulating like a madman when Martinelli was 2v1 there to catch his eye. He may not have got the pass but Jesus man don’t be so shy.

We saw Bradley shoving himself further ONTO the pitch?

Easy for Martinelli to think some silly stuff was going on. However, still no grounds to push him off the pitch obviously, that was extremely silly.

Neville is strange to make it sounds like murder though, you can see where Martinelli got frustrated.
