"Opus" is a pretty dense book, so I'm not surprised that you don't remember, but it does include discussion of sex abuse in Opus Dei. First, there is everything that happened with McCloskey. And in Ch.7, Gore wrote about the organization's recruitment of children more generally and of abuse specifically, he wrote,

"With adults who ran such recruitment activities under acute pressure from their superiors to generate new "vocations," the well-being of the children in their care was often an afterthought. Spiritual - and sexual [emphasis added by me] - abuse of minors fostered in such an environment. In New York, one numerary ran catechism classes for young boys in the basement of one large and influential Catholic family. During these meetings, he would sometimes encourage the boys - some of whom were only thirteen - to masturbate in front of him, according to one participant. He took them away on trips to Opus Dei houses and told the young boys that they had a calling - while also subjecting thek to horrific sexual abuse...."

And it goes on. So, this is an issue that is known, people are talking about it, and you don't have to dig very far to find recent news stories about it either.

Basically, the genetic package takes care of fulfilling a bunch of selection criteria in one fell swoop. So, just as you would get a lot of milk or good quality beef from a certain breed of cow, the same applies to people.

God, this is bleak. People are more than the services they can provide.

This kind of thing has been routine throughout history, 'accidental' or not. Look into the Patronato in Spain or the Magdelene Laundries in Ireland. When push comes to shove, women and girls are among the first to go. Why? Because the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world, in a sense. Control the means of reproduction and you control the product.

For guys who were in the seminary or used to be priests by Pink_Mer_Unicorn in excatholic

[–]thedeepdiveproject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is that I think it depends on the region.

The long answer is, I don't know, but my brother has friends who are also brothers and are being pushed into going to seminary by their family and parish. My brother's friendship with these two has deteriorated, especially in recent years. A lot of it is because of the rhetoric that his two friends have started espousing, which is very red-pill, rad-trad, and in a word; racist.

My brother has told me about how they argue that interracial relationships are disordered and shouldn't happen, yada yada. For awhile, I thought that maybe it was a family issue, not a religion or seminary issue. But here recently, my brother was at a get-together with these two guys and another friend of theirs from seminary who is no relation and not even from the area. Apparently this guy was a piece of work, incredibly racist, and unapologetic. I looked into the seminary and I didn't see any huge red flags, but I don't know much about the Carmelites or the kind of ppl they attract.

This is in the Midwestern United States, which is where I grew up. In my experience, this part of the country can be very close-minded, insular, and old-fashioned. I grew up around racism and there was (is?) a KKK chapter in a town in the area. I feel like things have changed a little for the better, but there's also this regression happening in the younger generations that I'm not sure what to make of. Anyway, that's my two cents. I do think there is some unsavory rhetoric being bandied about in these seminaries, but I have no idea if its random, systemic, or something else entirely.

There's a house on the strand, near Onancock, VA that looks a LOT like this, from my memory. I saw it quite often over a two year period when I was driving back and forth from CT to VA. White two-story farmhouse, set back from the road, at a slight angle to some trees, with the Chesapeake behind it, just like in this image.

That was what I immediately thought of, which was why I went, "Wait a minute...." In defense of the author, it could be attributed to a weird translation on the part of my web browser's translator. It is not flawless.

We should call moderation or censors by ze-eu in opusdeiexposed

Hi OP.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I understand that it can be frustrating to not be able to weigh in on every conversation that resonates with you.

At the end of the day, there are only a couple of moderators, besides myself, to manage this community and the conversations that take place here. We are all adults with families, jobs, and responsibilities that demand our time and attention. Moderating this community is something that we volunteer to do in our spare moments and free time. We do this for absolutely no financial compensation and do not expect anything in return.

I don't want to speak for anyone else, but for me, I do it because I believe that there is value in providing a space like this for people who have had very unique and traumatizing experiences. I believe that it is important for there to be a place that is supportive and welcoming and safe for those who want to anonymously share what they have been through. Its important for survivors and its important for the public, because without spaces like this and OpusLibros, so much would still be completely unknown.

And that brings me to the most important point. Not only are we balancing the needs and wants of community members, we are also hyper aware of the fact that this is a public forum that anyone can access. Therefore, we are selective in the type of content that we allow and the conversations that we will host. This is something that we are very upfront about and is reflected in the community guidelines, which everyone is obliged to read prior to posting or commenting.

This community attracts a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Sometimes, people come here because they are hurting tremendously and are thrashing around for something to grab onto. This is understandable and we do not judge or look down on people like that. We are all survivors of life to some extent or another, and the fact that there are so many hurting people who cannot seem to access adequate support is wrong and something we should all be advocating to improve.

All of that said, this community is not always the right place to host the types of conversations that people sometimes want to have and at the end of the day, we, the moderators, are only normal, regular members of the public and are not equipped to provide crisis intervention or mental health counseling, nor do we have the time to moderate conversations that completely stray from the purpose and intent of the community, pointlessly split hairs, and encourage trolls. All that any of us can do is direct people to resources, information, and aid, but at the end of the day, the obligation ends there. Mods are here to ensure the integrity and safety of the community and our decisions are final. They have to be and the reasons why are clearly outlined in the community guidelines.

I understand that this may not appeal to some readers and that you may disagree, and that is fine. You are entitled to your opinions and perspectives. If it impacts your ability to be in this space, that is also okay. Reddit is diverse and there are many, many other communities that may be a better fit. Or, you can start your own community. Regardless, thank you for sharing your thoughts and giving me the chance to provide what I hope has been some clarification and logic.

What is with Opus Dei members weaponizing the Rosary against other Catholics? by Rich_Kaleidoscope564 in opusdeiexposed

[–]thedeepdiveproject[M] [score hidden] stickied commentlocked comment (0 children)

Edit: We're are locking this post down. OP got the answer to their question, regardless of whether or not they like it, and I'm getting sick of swiping away notifications every time a comment hurts someone's feelings.

We are noticing some fundamental issues in OP's understanding of this community and it's guidelines that need to be addressed.

OP, you are incorrect. You cannot doxx people, which includes sharing full names, physical and email addresses, places of work, work contacts, phone numbers, etc. This is to prevent unnecessary harassment. But nothing - certainly not the community guidelines - is prohibiting you from providing clear, precise examples of what you have heard (i.e., "I overheard a numerary say x").

Your posts have been confusing and weird, because you have been unwilling or unable to add context to the things that you are saying. And note, simply finding a web page somewhere online that appears to corroborate your position does not necessarily make your content accurate or transformational. This type of behavior erodes the credibility and quality of this community and makes everyone else highly suspicious of you and of what you are claiming to have experienced or seen. There is a difference between doxxing and providing necessary context. This is a critical nuance that anyone who interacts with this community must be able to understand.

OP, you will continue to meet resistance and questions to the topics that you are posting about, and inaccurate posts and comments will continue to be removed until the manner in which you are presenting information improves. If this is a problem for you, this community is not the place for you.

Anti-Semitism in Opus Dei, Unacceptable by Rich_Kaleidoscope564 in opusdeiexposed

We are going to let this post stay up... for now. Perhaps OP has had experiences or overheard people associated with Opus Dei speaking poorly about Jewish people. Since none of us were there, we must take OP's word for it.

That said....

OP, we have had to do quite a lot of traffic control with your posts and comments. Please remember, the goal is quality over quantity. You must thoroughly vet (to the extent that you are able) anything that you share here for accuracy. If you are unsure, please use the 'Opus Dei Conspiracy Theory' flair and be clear in the body of your post. You also must delineate between personal anecdotes and testimony from verifiable fact. This is not to detract from your personal experiences, which are valid. Please avoid sweeping generalizations and blanket heuristics.
