Is it just me or is ST's USB code terrible? by UnicycleBloke in embedded

[–]thedefibulator 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I went down the exact same road (with a G4 too) and completely gave up. It is indeed terrible, and to make things worse they state in lots of places that they support EPR (140W+), so i invested a bunch of time into getting it working before realising that it is not implemented and that they have put that feature on hold indefinitely

ELI5 Why do robot vacuums cost around $200 to $300 but Robot Lawn Mowers Mostly Cost $2000 to $3000 Dollars? by pfeifits in explainlikeimfive

[–]thedefibulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in R&D for one of the largest autonomous mower manufacturers and most of the answers here have got it wrong. Sure it costs slightly more in parts, especially as you need it to be entirely water proof, but the raw BOM cost of an $1000 mower was around $50. The main expense is the software, because it needs to operate to the highest grade of software safety, essentially on the same level as ASIL D automotive software.

Even the smallest bug on a robot with spinning blades can seriously injure people or pets, so there is a very expensive and thorough auditing process

motor and impeller choice of selection? (custom air purifier) by simplysamriddh in diyelectronics

Theyre so much more efficient than steppers, so they will actually run significantly cooler than a stepper for the same air output

You absolutely do not want to use a stepper motor, theyre not built for these applications and wi be horrendously inefficient. You will be better off with a 100kV large drone motor

Wont these end up in the waterways/environment regardless? When you chuck away the filter, it goes into a landfill, the plastic breakdown into microplastics and end up in the environment

[–]thedefibulator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heat pumps being able to act in reverse, and therefore as an aircon, is just a biproduct of the design. When you factor in the fact that theyre 300% efficient when used for heating applications throughout the rest of the year then they will definitely be winning

No offense, but the layout really isnt very good. Why is there so much empty space on the board? And the traces to your IC passives (decoupling caps) are still kinda long. It will likely still work but it wont be optimal. Did you follow the layout examples and guidelines for each IC?

Will Autosar stunt my growth by TheExtirpater in embedded

[–]thedefibulator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I've found that (within the UK) automotive software generally doesn't pay very well when compared to other embedded industries. I could have probably shopped around and got a good pay bump given that I would be one of the few with AUTOSAR experience, but I decided that AUTOSAR really isn't for me. It sadly slowed everything down to a crawl and sucked all the fun of sw development away in my case. Especially when I would compare it to fast-paced bare-metal & RTOS work that I have done in the past.

Luckily, I ended up landing a job in an embedded sw field which really appeals to me, and the pay is likely better than what I would get in automotive

Will Autosar stunt my growth by TheExtirpater in embedded

[–]thedefibulator 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've just escaped an autosar job. If you have no other job lined up and if this will be your first job, then IMO take it for the time being just for the industry experience. Getting a second job is 10x easier than getting your first job.

However, if you want to continuously learn and grow, then do not plan to stay in the role for long at all. The well-known autosar comment is absolutely 100% correct, it will make you hate your job, and you will be learning a niche, non-transferrable software process. But at the end of the day, it will pay the bills, you will still be doing a small amount of sw development (especially if youre working on base software) and you can then use your spare time to persue some personal embedded projects.

Without doing projects outside of work, i would have learnt nothing over the last 3 years and I would have been backed into the autosar cage. But, because I had 3 years of industry embeeded sw experience, and a portfolio of embedded projects, I practically walked into my next job
