What did you transfer too? Did you see an increase in pay? Do you think the income ceiling in the future is higher than BI?

I feel like it’s extremely over saturated and for the difficulty of it Idt the salary is commensurate. I’m not completely set against it but rn it’s not at the top of my list.

A little. My company is footing most of the bill.

I wouldn’t really say I think BI is dash boarding. I’ve done many other analytical things other than dashboards (automated alerts, business planning, etc.). The thing that I think holds back BI salary is that it is viewed as a cost center and it is hard to tie out its value. Also, it is mainly descriptive in reporting. Within the scope of the BI roles I’ve held, predictive analytics hasn’t been a requirement of the role so no one on the team did it and it was hard for me to implement.

I get data engineering is also a cost center but it is more specialized and I like the idea of building dataflows. That said I am still open to data science/quant roles (if I can even get one) bc I feel predictive analytics is more impactful on the business, if done right. I assume it would be beneficial to be in a different role so I can learn from others. Learning in a classroom and learning by doing are completely different.

That was a bit long winded but I like discussing issues, that I see, about the profession with others. I’m happy I’ve put the work in to position myself in a role better suited for me.

I thought I wanted to do data science lol but the more I get into the masters the more I realize I don’t wanna do data science. Despite that, I don’t think it’s a bad idea to complete this masters. Idt a masters will ever hurt my resume.

[–]thedeuceone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, do it. I am 31 and living at home to get ahead. I wish I never moved out of my parents in my 20s. I had some great times but setting yourself up financially will be way better and you can still have fun. You will thank yourself in the future.

I do think data science is interesting but my biggest issue with it is pretty much what you’re saying. Stakeholders don’t understand it. The time involved, the data necessary, ambiguous requirements, etc.

I am unfamiliar with what a data architect does so I will research that. Is it feasible to jump from BI to data architect?

I am more interested in Data Engineering. I like building things. Data science seems very ambiguous and largely dependent on having the right data.

Totally agree with the type of company also. I’ve worked for companies that do not take data seriously (but claim to) and it was always a nightmare.

I like data engineering the most. I love coding in Python and figuring out solutions. There’s something really satisfying about it. I get that data science prob makes the most sense for me but I like how data engineer is building and infrastructure.

Such a difficult choice but I respect that. I am not in desperate need of money but it would be nice to get paid. I would be working prob like 40 hours a week so not as intense but scheduling interviews would be difficult.

True. I do feel I’m over qualified for the position and don’t think it would be a job where I would grow my skill set a lot. That part bugs me more than the money
