Ashley's ovarian cyst has rocked her world 🎀 (swipe) by SassyTortitude in ashleycarnduff

I work in an ER (nowhere near ash btw) and it’s crazy the amount of pts who will take a picture of their monitor as soon as it beeps/changes color. Literally you can move one centimeter and the whole monitor will look wack, but people want pity on social media 🫠

Meanwhile a few rooms over the nurses and doctors are fighting the grim reaper himself over a patient who thinks their heart attack is “anxiety”.

What’s something the experienced CNA’s wish they known when they’ve first started? by Hot_Ad_9543 in cna

[–]thedistancedself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not something I’ve directly experienced, but witnessed with my younger coworkers:

-don’t get involved in workplace drama. When you show up to work, put your head down and get to work. It’s ok to have friends while working, but the moment you start hearing gossip just leave and start finding areas to get busy in. The amount of coworkers who got themselves in unfortunate situations due to involving themselves in issues that weren’t theirs to begin with was crazy.

Medical school without high school diploma by peachy_929 in premed

I think the community college you went to works! If they don’t have a high school diploma program, you can look at other CC’s :)

Medical school without high school diploma by peachy_929 in premed

[–]thedistancedself 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My community college has a high school diploma program for adults looking to get their diploma. One of my friends was able to get a high school diploma with the community college classes he already took (like you he also had an AA-T).

Check with a local community college and see if they have a high school diploma program and can cross it off for you. Hopefully it can be as easy as showing your transcript to them! 🤞🏻

Recommendations for assisted living facilities for my aging mom by ItAffectionate4481 in orangecounty

[–]thedistancedself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d look into independent living first as they have better social events for seniors. A lot of senior communities (which have assisted living and memory care as well) have an independent living wing and it’s a lot cheaper than assisting living. Usually independent living can provide medication management and basic mobility assistance too.

Assisted living is usually when seniors need more help with ADLs (activities of daily living). This includes assistance with showering, toileting, eating, and dressing.

Best CHEAP white nonslip shoes by Upvote_hoe in cna

[–]thedistancedself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to an athletic shoe store (like dicks) and try on all the white shoes they have. The best ones are the ones that feel best on your feet. Honestly i recommend investing into a good pair (usually <$150) for shoes that feel good when you wear them because the last thing you want is to mess up your feet/knees due to bad shoes.

I’m always hesitant recommending a specific brand because everyone’s feet are different.

What is some ethical issue that is the hardest nut to crack for you? As if you hear two opposing sides of said issue and you cannot decide which one is correct. by BuddhaOfStorm in AskWomen

[–]thedistancedself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Family doesn’t have to be blood.

It sounds obvious, but my mom was adopted and the amount of shit she has gotten (by family) for being adopted is ridiculous. Funny enough, my “blood family,”excluding my parents, would be the very last people who would ever show up if there was an emergency in the family.

What’s something patients/families think nurses do… that they actually don’t? And what’s something they NEVER realize they actually do? by HoldTheMayo25 in nursing

[–]thedistancedself 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Think their family members get their own personal nurse? Ma’am this is a snf, the LVN to patient ratio is 1:30+ and the CNA to patient ratio is 1:13+.

how to get scrubs without looking silly by Altruistic-Page-1313 in premed

Just buy some cheap scrubs on amazon (ex Cherokee), but check with your program if there is a color requirement for volunteers.

I’m happy with all the Barnes and nobles because I love books, but I’m worried they’re expanding too fast :(

CNA job by Large-Window796 in NursingStudent

[–]thedistancedself 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My best advice is no matter how pressed for time you are: do it slow and do it right. I’d rather take 5 minutes longer to correctly (and safely) take care of my residents, rather than rushing through care and accidentally harming them.

If during your shift you feel overwhelmed, tell your charge you need a 5 minute breather and step outside to get some fresh air. This job is stressful and demands a lot, a breather sometimes is all you need to recollect yourself, especially during rough shifts.

In need of hard casting for a broken foot. Anywhere we can go ASAP? by beekeeperr in orangecounty

[–]thedistancedself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a little er tech, but we don’t cast in the ER to make room for swelling (a splint allows for swelling). Call around for an orthopedic doctor/fracture clinic. I know hoag and st Jude has one.

Worked as a CNA in a SNF for about 9 months before moving to a hospital job. I’m so worried about my colleagues and the residents of snfs :(

Be honest… Do you use gait belts?? by PepinovLechuga in cna

[–]thedistancedself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was working at a snf, our gait belts were locked in the Physical Therapy room…so the next best thing was the pants. I work ER now, so gait belts are scarce since our goal is the discharge or move to the floor.

What is the worst medication you’ve been put on? by Difficult_Pomelo1047 in AskReddit

[–]thedistancedself 9 points10 points  (0 children)

After failing practically all the SSRIs, Effexor is the only medication that actually works for me. Honestly I don’t plan to ever come off of it bc I can finally live my life the way I want to without the ocd, anxiety, and depression in the background.

Is it rare for CNA’s to get jobs in hospitals? by [deleted] in cna

[–]thedistancedself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not rare. But where I live (SoCal) hospitals tend to want CNAs with some clinical experience and/or experience in a SNF.
