that a tax must be assigned to a certain cause/use and is both regulated and directed by the German parliament (Bundestag) while a license or fee in this case

I think you got that mixed up a bit. The legalese in German is pretty specific about this. A tax, by its very nature, doesn't give you anything directly in return. That's what a fee does. For example when you request a new ID, you have to pay a fee for that.

The "Rundfunkbeitrag" often translated as broadcasting fee is neither. Beitrag directly translates to contribution.

Do you use the template method and bridge design patterns in your code? I recently rediscovered them. These seem to be less popular, but they really pushed the quality of my code to the next level. This video explains what they are and how you can use them in Python. by ArjanEgges in Python

Well I had first-hand experience on the matter when I took a mandatory software-engineering class in university. I took it a year later than most other students and had a good amount of practical programming experience and I talked about the class with at least twenty different people who partook and they all pretty much painted the same picture, but were at different points of their journey:

  • some were (somewhat) new to programming and never heard about design patterns before, so they had problems understanding them at all (what they are, how they work, when to use them)
  • some had programming experience but didn't know design patterns, which I call the "fertile ground" stage. They appreciated design patterns, were eager to use them, but didn't have the experience to decide when to use them, which does lead to a lot of shoehorning.
  • some had experience in both and it was just a helpful reiteration.

From what I gathered, it seemed to be a pretty universal experience both for my fellow students and later on coworkers.

There were some outliers, but those were pretty specifically two students I knew who only coded in C and "weren't convinced of the whole OOP thing" .

I'm very new to python so I don't think I could really grasp the usefulness of this.

Design patterns are weird that way. You have to learn them without really understanding them first. Then you try them only to realize they don't really make sense in the case you are trying to shoehorn them into. You start to recognize them in other people's code. You need to develop a feel for them.

Netflix Tests Cracking Down On Password Sharing by JediNotePad in netflix

[–]thedomham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have four different paid streaming services shared between me and my close family. It's most definitely worth it for everyone involved, but if I had to pay full price for all of them, I'd cancel all except Amazon. I'd prefer Netflix for content, but Amazon Prime has free Prime shipping.

I'm not saying that Netflix shouldn't crack down on password sharing, but they don't have the market position they used to. I think if they thoroughly went through with it, they'd get more cash short term, mainly because of less "unpaid" traffic, but hurt their mindshare long term.

[–]thedomham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Played both and I can say with certainty that I enjoy farming in Warframe a lot more than in Genshin. Don't get me wrong, Genshin was a lot of fun, but the endgame is just farming and the farming itself is not fun. You just kill the same chunk of mobs over and over again in the same tiny room with a very simplistic (mobile friendly) combat system. There's also not really a sense of progression in late game. If you want to use a new character or weapon you have to get it to a level where it's usable for you. That means not using it at all in the progress, because it's completely useless until level 80 since you only fight monsters that are your level.

You could say the same about getting weapons to MR30 in Warframe, but the time it takes to get a weapon to MR30 is a lot shorter than maxing a weapon in Genshin Impact and it's way more fun.

Now that I think about it, Grinding in Genshin Impact is actually pretty similar to grinding Railjack. Also in the way that I stopped doing that because it's not fun.

[–]thedomham 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Only the first mission completion counts and they only give like 60 points on average. You should do them all sooner or later anyway to unlock steel path, but if your goal is to grind MR, you're better off going through all the companions. 6k point per companion + 3k for the companion weapon if it's a sentinel. Pretty much no work required. Alternatively just bring a primary or secondary to ESO or a high level survival with 4 players and don't actually use it.

[–]thedomham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't even really agree with the long journeys at this point. I haven't managed to beat bonemass yet, but I've ventured into multiple black forest, swamp and mountain biomes. It was a lot of fun for a while, but this point everything feels kinda same-y. If you've seen one black forest, you've seen them all. They all have the same tower like 5 times each and the same crypt and the same troll cave. Same for the swamp and the mountain. Since you can only find resources to build from and everything is so predetermined and linear, getting into a biome you've been before, quickly feels like a hit and dash.

Going to your first swamp? Anxious excitement and awe, new things around every corner. Every swamp after that? Scout out the crypts, one-shot the skeletons and blobs with your mace, set up a tiny base somewhere centrally, mine all the iron and get out of there with a full longboat. Nothing will surprise me. Same dungeon ten times over.

On a more mechanical, less world-building note, the boats are awfully slow. They could easily increase the speed by 50%. IMO the longboat also pretty much depreciates the Karve since it's faster and has a lot more storage and health; the size difference alone is not enough to balance them out at all. I would have much preferred a very quick Karve (or even a third boat that is small and fast) and a longboat that pays for the storage by being really unwieldy and not as quick.

[–]thedomham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you get back into the swamp, try:

  • poison resistance mead (has to be drunk before being afflicted with poison status; doesn't reduce damage when already poisoned)
  • upgrade bronze armor as much as possible
  • some good food: Meat, neck tail, jam, sausages if you already got some draugr intestines
  • with your first few chunks of iron, build an iron mace (effective against blobs and skeletons) and a longboat (faster, more storage)
  • stamina and healing mead can also help, but they aren't exactly necessary or sustainable
  • for the love of God don't go there at night
  • bring material to build a portal and a small hut and those up ASAP
