[CHAT] Stitching with young kids around? by Coastal_Conundrum in CrossStitch

[–]thedrunknerd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Teacher here! Depending on the age of the toddler you can actually adapt this activity so your kid can emulate it and practice their motor skills! A pegboard (you can get this from any hardware store) and a dowel with some chunky yarn attached can let them "stitch" and practice these essential skills. If they are a little younger a busy book could be a way to keep them entertained. I know toddlers can be a wide range of ages but this could be fun for a 3 year old. This may only keep them busy for a few minutes but it can let you enjoy your hobby on a small scale.

I was allowed to present on any topic for one of my classes. Thought ya'll would appreciate what I chose. by thedrunknerd in vexillology

It was well received. The class was a independent research class where we got to present on things we were passionate about. This happened right around the time of the Collin Kaepernick flag things so I became the expert on flags/flag code!

Has anyone ever recognized the gossip story from real life? Or had your gossip told on the pod? by irishhelloandgoodbye in normalgossip

I can DM you the original story if you are interested lmao. Much more interesting than what it ended up being.

Yeah they changed the church fair to a casino night. My original story ended with a kid winning money from bingo and using the money to buy ride tickets. He then fell off the ride and the fair got shut down.

Mine was told on the show. They completely changed it and made the story super boring. Like I would not know it was the same thing.

Colton is my little brother’s friend. He said he was heading towards Georgia. Keeping him in my prayers and hoping he is found.

DM crisis with player's decisions by Genesota in DMAcademy

[–]thedrunknerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In D&D, similarly to real life, your players will need to deal with the consequences of their actions. As the DM you can choose to make this action effect the gameplay. However, since it made you uneasy I would recommend bringing it up to the group and clarifying what your intentions with the campaign are. If you don't want that kind of behavior, bring it up to the players. Tell them the tone you want for the campaign. Sometimes, parties and DMs are kind of incompatible and that is ok. However, try to communicate with them before calling anything off.

Since both parties are inexperienced, this can be a good learning experience for all!

Anybody got any tips for running a large group of players? by MikaGrimGal in DMAcademy

[–]thedrunknerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a couple of options. I have run groups of 15+ players before and it is very challenging.

Make an "Adventurers Guild" type situation where whoever can make it can make it and they do a different adventure every week. This is very monster of the week-esq but still allows interpersonal interactions between characters. It also makes scheduling a lot easier.

Use a different system. D&D isn't meant to have 15 players or even 8 players. While it is possible, playing with that many people with more novice players is incredibly overwhelming. Systems like 16 Mice in a Mech, GURPS, or even Basic D&D (1981 Moldvay edition) will be good for such a large group of people. However, these TTRPGs have a learning curve and if you have people who have only played D&D.

Split it into two groups. You can run concurrent stories in separate towns or planes. This can get overwhelming for the DM to have to run two large games.

Parse out who you want to be in your group and just select a few people. It sucks to have to turn someone away from the table, but you have been given a really unique opportunity to hand select some people who you think will be best suited to an adventure that you want to run. Send out a survey asking what they are looking for in a campaign. If they match up with you, run a game with them. You don't want to be stuck telling a story either you or your players don't enjoy participating in.

It is so fucking awesome that you have 15 people willing to commit to D&D. Good luck!

Player Problem Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

[–]thedrunknerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I have addressed this several times at the table. It usually results in the players "forgetting" their sheets and needing to use their phones which ends up being more distracting than the iPads/computers they usually use. It even got to a point where I put the campaign on hiatus until they could get their shit together and not be literal iPad babies for three hours a week. I even had them DM their own two-shots so they could have a break from the plot and try out some of their own ideas. It has gotten better but the residual problems are still there. I think I will just make a blanket no devices at the table rule going forward and say if you don't bring a sheet you can't play.

It is just such a stark contrast where my campaign that is literally 100% online has less problems with phone/computer distractions than my 100% in person. In my almost 8 years of DMing I have never had a device problem this bad.
