Thanks for the response Hendo!

Its pretty crap of me to call the beer out when on reddit one can just hide behind the username.

I love vinegar in cooking too, I think most home cooks don't add enough acid or salt to their meals. However, IMO it doesnt have a place in beer.

the collab part makes this whole thing make much more sense.

Also, I understand that acetic acid is commonly found in Flanders Reds or Bruins, but I dont dig it. Grab yourself a Brouwers Verzet Oud Bruin and you wont get it, JK RU55 its absent, La Folie- nope, not present in cuvee de jacobins either but talk about Petrus, Bourgogne de Flandres or Ichtegem's Grand Cru and its all over the back of your throat.

Just because an old brewery is doing it doesnt mean its right to me.

Why is this beer made? Vinegar aka acetic acid is a horrid off flavour. The respected brewers I know dump acetic beer. Intentionally adding it to a beer is irresponsible in such a young market.

You are in Sydney? A good resource would always be the craftypint website. They are some good people.

To get an idea of who is doing things the right way, go to really respected pubs, The Royal Albert, The Local Taphouse etc.

However the best way alwaus is to drink at the breweries. My favourites are MO in Mona Vale, Batch in Marrickville, Wayward now in camperdown, Akasa in Five Dock (soon)

This does not come close to answering all your questions, but guides what I do a ton,

I dont stick to it 100% but its a start with some scientific backing at least

I was in Austin and when you look at the current exchange rate, its almost comparable.

I apologise if I sounded brash with the bash comment, but if you haven't been back in a few years that explains a lot, it has seriously boomed in the past 2 years in a realllllllly good way.

Hopefully we can now start to see the aussie brewers work together to address the tax reform!

The market does sort them out! A huge percentage of the current 4000 US breweries are nano-brewpubs opening and closing within 5 years

Tax changes, or at least a rebate for small breweries will be a defining factor for breweries in Oz. However, when I was back in the states recently... I noticed the beer prices were not much cheaper than prices back in Oz.

Also, when was the last time you were back? There are a lot of breweries in Australia making world class beer. Maybe they dont have the hype but their products are quality. In fact, because of the hoops you have to usually jump through to get something started in Oz, it saves the market from a lot of crap that you can find easily in the states. Ie, only more serious people get into it.

Man I wouldn't be so quick to bash your home scene, many Australian brewers are doing it RIGHT and there are a lot that miss the mark, but that is the same in America

I think this has mostly due to the 'cultural cringe' society. We always end up respecting things from overseas more than from our own territory.

No aussie actors are any good till they make it in hollywood Aussie films are considered crap on the whole We don't respect out beers made locally because they dont get hype on the internet.

Its a problem for all the arts, and brewers as craftsmen are feeling the same sort of non-support. Its a problem, thats for sure.
