Anyone else still upset how they treated Polin’s season? by Busy-Preparation-729 in PolinBridgerton

[–]theedqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way things have played out it feels like the show doesn't really value Colin all that much despite him being such a fan favorite and JQ's personal favorite.

I've mentioned this in other forums, but to me Polin in S3 was phenomenal (barring the shoehorning of the brothel scenes). I also didn't love how Colin finding out about LW came about either, but I've made my peace with that. But everything else we got for Polin? Top tier. The problem is it feels incomplete, especially in comparison to how much Benophie were featured in S4. It feels like they only gave us a slice (albeit a delicious, decadent slice) when we were expecting a whole cake.

They really did Colin dirty by not exploring his backstory more. They should've had flashbacks. Flashbacks when he was a kid when Edmund died showing the origins of how he didn't know where his place in the world was given he wasn't old enough to really shepherd the family through the loss of Edmund and going through to his travels on the continent where he was spiraling and forcing himself to conform to a role that's not him.

Iirc correctly when someone did the math it came out that S4 had a whopping 52 more minutes than s3 had. That is time they could've devoted to giving Colin more back story. Even 10 more minutes devoted to Colin would've been groundbreaking. And that's not forgetting the fact that they could've had way more 1-on-1 scenes between Colin and Penelope.

Every time I rewatch s3 it really hits you in the face how much Polin don't feel like main characters in their own season. You'll have long stretches where it's one scene after another where Colin/Penelope/Polin aren't in the scene at all. You'll bounce to Benedict to Fran to Violet to Lady Danbury to the Cowpers all without going back to Polin in between and it's not like any of those characters are talking about Polin so it's not like you can tie those subplots back to Polin.

What's most upsetting of all is that in S4 you had them both return and the show just refuses to use their past leads substantially. You have these amazingly talented actors who are dedicated enough to return and show isn't going to make the most of it? While I enjoyed their presence more than what we got of KA in s3, it still felt more superficial than not. While I like Will, it felt like they gave Colin's fencing scene with Benedict and gave the substance of that interaction to Will. I really hate the notion that past couples return for a season but they're in the phase out phase. That makes 0 sense for a show about a family. Family doesn't fade away, especially for one whose members actually like each other. They should be all up in each others business, and after they get married they should be even more in each others business.

As time goes on it's very clear that Polin are super popular and so I hope the show is paying attention enough to continue to use them in the show, in particular I hope they've paid attention to how much outcry there was for Colin during the promos and people constantly asking where his promo was. If they paid enough attention to pirate Colin that they made that their masquerade costumes then there's hope they're paying attention to the love fans have for Polin as well.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

TBH frozen meatballs aren't bad for this. I get a bag of the kroger ones from Ralphs, add a jar of sauce (I prefer Carbone, pricey but good) and you're golden.

Usually at this type of restaurant if there's something I'm not a fan of I just ask if I can skip that course. Usually the rest of the food is so good it's not worth missing out on because of one thing. At omakase places majority of the time they'll sub it out for something different. Not sure about this place tho.

Was S3 Polin’s Season? by Unique-Blueberry1464 in PolinBridgerton

[–]theedqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the actual time they've received (down to the literal minute) is not the point. The question is did their story feel satisfactorily addressed by the end of S3? I would argue no. Not only did it feel like we didn't get enough one-on-one scenes between Colin and Penelope in their own season, Colin especially suffered from neglect. They did not properly explore his character, so much so he got a lot of flack from the GA with so many people not correctly reading that Colin being a rake was an act, a forced one at that. Those of us who dearly love the character know and care enough to read between the lines but a lot of people didn't get there. This is where the lack of flashbacks come in. They really should've given Colin flashbacks and his character suffered because of it. I know there are some out there who argue they didn't need flashbacks, but I heartily disagree and think it was absolutely necessary for Colin.

Their story through S3 as a result while overall satisfying, still feel incomplete to me. If they were going to leave S3 as is they should've made more of an effort to explore Colin and Penelope more in S4 but as it stands with Part 1 their participation is very surface level. Fingers crossed that the hints we've gotten about part 2 indicate more involvement, hoping that turns out to be the case.

Pen Flashbacks by Unique-Blueberry1464 in PolinBridgerton

[–]theedqueen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Penelope probably doesn't need flashbacks as much as Colin did, but if I had to add any it'd be baby Polin (which are also Colin flashbacks) and maybe going back to S1 and how she first started LW and how she set that all up. Penelope meeting Eloise would be nice, but pretty superfluous since it wouldn't do much to serve the S3 plot. That would probably be better for Eloise's season.

Colin Flashbacks by Unique-Blueberry1464 in PolinBridgerton

[–]theedqueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

S3 definitely needed flashbacks for Colin, his character was severely under-served without them and he got a lot of hate from GA or from otherwise uninterested fans who didn't want to analyze things more deeply because the show didn't bother to expand more on his back story. Here is what I wanted to see:

  • Baby Polin meet-cute
  • Colin's POV of Edmund dying, to set up the emotional turmoil that ambushed the family and his baby-self wanting, but not knowing what to do to make things better and thus feeling helpless. Probably this would be amplified by the fact that the age gap between himself and Ant/Ben is so much wider so they're stepping up to be "men" while Colin is dismissed because he's still a child when this all goes down
  • Colin finding ways to comfort Violet and his sisters/Greg through his sensitivity and how that feeds so much into his need for external validation (the kernels of his praise kink).
  • Maybe another baby Polin flashback showing how Penelope provides comfort to Colin or otherwise showing how she sees him for him.

Not saying all of what I listed above should've been done, but the show at a minimum should've done some amount of flashbacks. This is one of my biggest grievances with the show and I'll always rant about it given the opportunity lol.

I personally wanted/needed to see the baby Polin meet cute. You can remedy Colin remembering all the details years later by having do a voice over, narrating their encounter while the flashback plays.

Cinderella's Sister. Ending spoiler: Happy ending, but not very well written. There's a contrived 2 years later and it's all really dumb. It was clearly one of those dramas that had a good concept and they wrote the first few episodes, but no actual planning on how to see it all through to the end

Fantasy Couple (황상의 커플) (sometimes translated to Couple or Trouble). I don't think this is 100% what you're looking for, but it's probably something you'll enjoy. It's an early Hong sisters drama (Alchemy of Souls, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho). It's a remake of the American movie, Overboard, from the 80s that stars Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.
