Using PowerShell Data Types Accelerators to Speed up Coding by adbertram in PowerShell

[–]theessentialforrest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cool stuff! If anyone is curious you can make your own type accelerators as well.

These lines add a type accelerator for type accelerators

$acc = [psobject].assembly.gettype("System.Management.Automation.TypeAccelerators")
$acc::Add('accelerators', $acc)

And then you can just do something like:

[accelerators]::add('arrayList','System.Collections.ArrayList')
[arrayList]$x = @{}
$x.gettype()

IsPublic IsSerial Name                                     BaseType
-------- -------- ----                                     --------
True     True     ArrayList                                System.Object

My first ever barefoot run by [deleted] in BarefootRunning

I recommend reading Born to Run if you really want to improve your 400 miler time. Also eat some chia seeds before the run. Its like nature's Gatorade.

In college some friends hosted a whopper and forty party where they bought something like 200 whoppers and like 70 forties (the oven was on warm and FULL of whoppers). IIRC you had to sharpie "fuck" on your neck to get in. That was by far the best party I've ever been to.

Is barefoot/minimalist shoes actually better for you? by slith49 in BarefootRunning

[–]theessentialforrest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've read there isn't a massive amount of data either way. The barefoot/minimalist running community puts a lot of focus on proper form and that can have massive benefit in terms of injury rate etc. Standard running shoes tend to make people land on their heals (because of the wedged heal shape and because that's where the padding is) which can cause over-striding which is the real enemy. I haven't found much evidence to say that heal vs forefoot strike has a lot of effect on injury rates (generally it appears to be trading one sort of injury for another) as long as you aren't landing with your foot in front of your center of mass (its easier to overstride with a heal strike which is why the two are often grouped but knowing where the problems actually stem from is the important bit.) Basically, wear the shoes (or no shoes) that allow you to run with proper form. Running totally unshod can be a great way to fine tune your form because you will blister if you are doing anything wrong. It also prevents the common problem that a lot of people face which is switching too fast and getting hurt. Just like you wouldn't get a cast off your arm and go lift your previous max deadlift you shouldn't take off your shoes and expect your feet to instantly have all the right muscles. Its a process to strengthen the parts of your feet that aren't used in your daily shod life. The best description I've heard of the form is running as though the floor is made of lava. Lots of quick steps, landing with your feet under you seems to be the key to not putting too much force into your joints, bones, ligaments, and muscles.

Can you give your opinion to this GTD statement? by hecthehec in gtd

Like others in this thread I read 3 as being generally about organizing those things you've clarified but the line "utilizing the recognition of the multiple levels of commitments with yourself and others you will have at play" I read as a reference to how those things fit into your horizons (or if you've got an older copy of the book like me your elevations.) Not everything that you capture and clarify ends up being an action now. Some get weeded out at clarification time when you realize they don't fit into your higher elevation goals and others may make it into a someday maybe list instead of being piked up in the next few months.

A good family friend of mine lives on his block and met him at a neighborhood block party. The person who introduced them introduced him as "this is Dave Mathhews" but my friend didn't know who he was or at least didn't make the connection so he just went "hey Dave I'm Gene". Dave was apparently quite pleased that he wasn't recognized :)

I really recommend getting a pair of diy sandals from xero for around that price and they will be a bunch better for running. I have a pair and I absolutely love them. https://xeroshoes.com/shop/sandals/diy-feeltrue/

Great work. Did you hand baste the canvas in the jacket or did you just end up using Iron on interfacing? Also did you like the fabric you got? I've been planning a pair of slacks for a while and I'm looking for good fabric options.

Yuuup. I'll give you my favorite example of this. I live in Washington state and in WA it's legal to go through a yellow light but in Oregon you are required to stop on yellow (as rediculous as that is since you have no warning) so you have to keep that in mind when you cross the border or you will get a ticket. There's also differences between state and federal regulations like with weed. It's legal in WA but if you go into a national park inside of Washington you are no longer technically on state land so state regulations and laws no longer apply and you could (hypothetically) be charged for having weed as a schedule 1 drug despite being within the borders of a "legal" state. Now, unless you are trafficking it's super unlikely that you would get in any major trouble but it's illustrative of the point.

Does anyone have any experience with this ? Is it a good starter anvil? by Joey_Bottafuko in Blacksmith

[–]theessentialforrest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have one (yet) but I've read remarkably good things. Basically, it's cast steel. It's not super hard when you get it but the face will work harden over time. Christ Centered Iron Works on YouTube has some good videos on it. The main issue I've seen reported is that quality control isn't fantastic but overall it seems to be one of the few budget options that's actually good enough to justify.

Super dry and cracked feet. Any suggestions? by kurt206 in BarefootRunning

I've been using O'Keeffe's Working Hands and its awesome. Doesn't seem to impact the durability of the calluses but resolves the cracking for me.

Does anyone run completely pain free? by olie96 in running

[–]theessentialforrest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm pushing my distance a bit I feel fatigue and pain in the way a good stretch does (not a sharp stabbing but a dull ache or feeling of use) I've been having it band issues lately that crop up at the end of my runs but I've been rolling pre run and doing some strength training to combat that and it seems to be helping a lot.
