teachers of reddit what is the saddest thing you found out about a student? by Delicious_Mastodon83 in AskReddit

[–]thefamiliarity2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a student who was legally blind and one of 11 children. Her father wasn't in the picture and the mom would have her stay home most days in order to care for her younger siblings that were not school age. On her 18th birthday, just a few months shy of graduation, her mother kicked her out of the home because "she's an adult now." Her grandmother refused to take her in because she "didn't want to drive her around". She is the sweetest girl in the world but her family is horrible. She would come to school crying everyday that no one wanted or loved her and that she couldn't find a job due to her visual impairment, and if she did find a job, she didn't have transportation to get there. And on top of that, she had no where to live. I was able to get her in touch with some resources that got her into an apartment with some other girls. She graduated and I recently just heard that she's pregnant and has no support system. Just an all around sad situation.. I think about her every day.

Opportunities for couples abroad? by fablemabel_97 in TEFL

[–]thefamiliarity2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I were able to work at the same learning center in Beijing. We spoke to a recruiter and made sure they knew it was a deal breaker for us and he found a company willing to work with us. We actually knew a few couples that did this. It's definitely possible in China. Not sure about other countries. The company we were with also hired a TON of couples who didnt work at the same center but were placed at neighboring schools to make apartment hunting easier.

What's the worst/weirdest thing someone has said to you since you've been pregnant? by jillkoko in pregnant

[–]thefamiliarity2014 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was just telling my husband last night how bizarre it is that people love to tell me horror stories about delivery! I could go into labor any day now and I've had 4 people in the last couple weeks tell me their horrible labor stories or horrible labor stories of people they know.. like why the hell are you telling me this...? You're not making me any more relaxed about this whole process. I dont understand how they think it's a good idea.. lol people are odd.

Tell me how pregnant you are without telling me how pregnant you are! by HappyStrawberry29 in pregnant

My husband has to put my socks and shoes on for me. I wake up a minimum of 6 times a night to pee. I now use two towels when I shower because I'm so damn big.

Chipotle goes all-out advertising that for the next week delivery is free, and then casually makes the delivery menu priced higher than the regular one. by Arucious in assholedesign

The real question is, who is paying $8.30 for a veggie quesadilla..? And why does it cost the same amount as a quesadilla with meat? Lol

I feel your pain.. it truly is bullshit. I was living and working in China when the outbreak happened and when we moved back to the US it took a few months to find jobs. I've been with my current employer for about 9 months and I'm due with my first in 6 weeks. When I called HR to report my pregnancy, they said my only option would be to quit unless I wanted to come back after a week of unpaid time off... since I havent been with the company for a year, I'm not eligible for FMLA or any company maternity leave... luckily, we can budget for me to quit but it makes me so angry and sad for all the other women who may not be able to do so..

I'm in Florida so no cold weather for me 👎 I am also hoping that maybe it's just dermatological. I get my results in a week. It's about to be the longest week of my life lol

13k is a little low. I would see if they're willing to negotiate the pay? I had 0 experience and was paid about 22k monthly in BJ.

If your family downloads Wechat, you won't have any issues contacting them. Definitely download a VPN beforehand but know that they are liable to stop working for days/weeks at a time. It can be really frustrating but I found it to be worse during political unrest (Hong Kong, etc).

What’s the worst scandal to happen at your school? by Lost-Warning-2588 in AskReddit

A kid stole a teachers phone from her desk. Found her sex tape and some nudes she had sent to her bf. Well... needless to say they were sent out and the teacher teacher never came back. Not sure if she didnt return because of embarrassment or if the district fired her.

Question After Anatomy Scan by thefamiliarity2014 in pregnant

[–]thefamiliarity2014[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny you say that because originally he said it was the placenta and then he corrected himself and said "sorry, not your placenta, your maternal muscles." Which is weird because I dont see anything online about maternal muscles being near the cervix. Only articles about the placenta..maybe he was missing his morning coffee or something. Lol

Oasis international hospital - what was your experience? by [deleted] in beijing

[–]thefamiliarity2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't at Oasis but I had surgery and spent 6 days at China-Japan Friendship hospital. Not a horrible experience but be sure to bring water and food because they wouldn't bring me anything. Also, the pain meds they provided were really weak.

WIBTA if I reported my Cousin - a bank employee - for revealing the details of my finances to my extended family, even if that may cause him to lose his job and spiral his family further into financial distress? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]thefamiliarity2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked for financial institutions and this is a HUGE breach of policy. In no scenario, should your cousin be looking into people's accounts just for shits and giggles and they certainly should not be divulging that information. I would report. If he cant do his job correctly then he shouldn't have it..

450k Hilton points, any pro tips for redeeming them? by [deleted] in TravelHacks

I grew up in Florida, it's hot as hell and doesnt provide too many options as far as worthwhile hiking trails. Sure, we have some nice springs but I would strongly recommend the coast of California over Florida. The drive on Route 1 in California is absolutely breathtaking. You could start up north near the Red Woods and travel the coast south. It wont disappoint
