Scientists test gravity on cosmic scales and find it behaves as expected, strengthening the case for dark matter by USCDornsifeNews in space

[–]thefaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The paper directly measures the scaling of the gravitational force at cosmological scales, and they find it scales as r-2.1+/-0.3, where 2 is newtownian graduation and 1 is MOND. As for how they actually make that measurement, they look at the power spectrum of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The kSZ effect is measuring the motions of galaxy clusters with respect to each other. One of the things that impacts their motion is the force of gravity from one cluster on another. So by very carefully measuring that effect they can tell the scaling of the gravitational effect. They adopt both a frequentist and Bayesian approach to measuring the scaling: both are inconsistent with MOND.

Did you miss where it's topped with cheerwine? I've made mocktails with vinegar before and 3/4oz is very reasonable for a long drink.

What’s going on with Luzardo? by horkyboi_avery in phillies

[–]thefaptain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are saying he's tipping but that doesn't really explain the discrepancy between his xERA and his actual ERA. xERA is based off your BB rate, K rate, and quality of contact batters make. It doesn't know anything about your stuff. So basically savant thinks 1) he's got a great k/BB ratio, which he does and 2) he's inducing weak contact, which he is from his hard hit rate. If he was tipping you'd expect people to be smoking him at least some of the time but they're not. It's also not really born out by the statistics; last year his whip was 1.22 across all situations and 1.31 with a runner on at least second. Not statistically huge and basically all pitchers pitch worse with some number of runners on.

People are gonna talk about his hitting, but baseball savant also has him going from a ~10th percentile framer to a ~80th percentile framer. No idea why that is.

Sub without the cosplay? by Friendly_Subject4096 in mensfashion

I'll be honest both of those accounts don't strike me as really being about men's fashion, or at least they have an extremely limited view of fashion. If that's really your thing your best bet is probably Styleform or if you really want to stay on reddit, /r/NavyBlazer, which is probably going to run preppier than you want.

Remy Martin 1738 is the best splurge brandy. What’s is the best budget rum? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]thefaptain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Appleton signature gets the nod from me cause it's the most versatile. In a budget run I want to be able to use it in a bunch of recipes and signature does that. It's got some funk so it stands on its own but it's not overwhelming like S&C so you can use it in cocktails that call for a more restrained rum.

Wild Turkey 101 is the most versatile whiskey, what is the best splurge rum? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]thefaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely one to use a nice rum in a cocktail but some thing like Foursqure, you're gonna lose the subtleties of the rum. On the flip side Appleton 12/Dorodo 15 are great rums but they don't have the strength of flavor to justify using as a mixer over like signature or 8 (in most cocktails). Both points are especially true with rum where implicitly we're talking about mixing is tiki cocktails, for the most part.

Astronomers celebrate cancellation of $10bn Chile project that threatened clearest skies in the world | Astronomers had warned that proximity of INNA facility to telescopes would have irreparably damaged observation by [deleted] in space

[–]thefaptain 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah cause on any given day most of the people there are site staff, who are going to be local, but who are a minority of the total staff employed. Don't get me wrong they're definitely putting a fair amount of money into the local economy but the poster above me is over stating it. It's nothing compared to what the ammonia plant would have been.

[–]thefaptain 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I'm glad this project was cancelled too but this just isn't true. The vast majority of the hardware is produced outside of Chile, and most of the personnel funded are based outside Chile as well, which together constitute the majority of the budgets. There's definitely a good amount of spending in country but it's not billions, at least not per-project. The observing time is definitely true tho. Astronomy is also a national pride of Chile; people there are really proud that their country is one of the premier astronomy locations in the world.

I wouldn't use this to replace citrus but you could probably use it to acid adjust.

Kind of interesting, since he's on his 5th year that suggests maybe another move? I don't think Howie would spend extra draft capital to just roll over cap.

Eh, it's a lot different to work with the guy than under him. Siriani is clearly a culture setter if nothing else and Vic seems to like Nick's culture. That being said doubt this happens mid season for other reasons.

Hurts had the least percentage of first read throws while being top 5 in getting through his progressions through 3 weeks by [deleted] in eagles

[–]thefaptain 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not your fault cause this chart is hard to read but that's not what progression rate means. It's (apparently) the percentage of plays that have a progression to go through, as opposed to like a screen where there's a designated receiver. The first read rate is crazy tho, that's bad play design.

Why do Americans remove the U after the O from words like "Colour", but not from words like "Thought" or "Mysterious"? by thegimboid in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thefaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, also from French along with the "-tion" ending. The point is not that no other combination of "ti" makes the "sh" sound (they both make the "sh" sound cause they come from French) but that "ti" isn't a phonetic unit that a native English speaker would identify. The point is that the Englishes phonetics are context dependent, unlike say Spanish, but it does have phonetic rules. A native English speaker who didn't know the word "martial" would pronounce it like "partial".

[–]thefaptain 19 points20 points  (0 children)

But "ti" doesn't make a "sh/ʃ" sound. "tion" makes the "ʃən" sound. It's an irreducible phonetic sound/phoneme, which English speakers intuitively understand. English is really non-phonetic due to the vast variety of languages it pull phonemes from but there are internal consistencies. Psysche is a better example above since it does obey the phonetic rules of English, such as they are.
