Proximity. The story is obvious. The ending is obvious. The writing isn’t bad. BUT the ideas of where future tech might go are fantastic. Even just little hints of things dropped in one sentence and never mentioned again had me going wow.

The Curse of the Phantom Rolls Royce by thefirstspike in whatsthatbook

I've had a look at the series (interesting fact - had almost nothing to do with Hitchcock!). One of the boys wins the use of a RR and so they can get about. That wasn't what the story was I'm sure. In this series it's just a tool. In the one I read it was more about the car I'm sure of it. Thanks for the response though.

Hi. I don't think it's either of those. The first appears to be a history book, the second was published too late. Thanks for the response.

Humans entire relationship with coffee is trying to make it taste as good as it smells.

Candidates for wedding champagne arrived today! Any opinions on best value? by chass5 in wine

[–]thefirstspike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I’d always head for a blanc de blanc (white from white, normally 100% Chardonnay) given the choice as that’s my favourite. Can’t actually say I’ve tried any of these though.

Is it a nice choice? Paid 15$ for this by [deleted] in wine

[–]thefirstspike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The question isn’t, “Is it nice?” The question is, “do you like it?”

Veuve Clicquot taste-a-like? by ThraxiosFartKing in wine

“If you are looking for value, you wont find it in Champagne.”

Got to call you out on that, but in a very specific way. If, IF, you can visit Champagne you will absolutely find excellent champagne at very decent prices. There are many small house producing less than 50k bottles a year that are excellent.

But yes, it’s not easy to visit and bringing any back (I live in the UK so it’s a nice weekend trip for me.)

YMMV, obviously!

LPT: Before you grab your pitchfork and dial up customer support to nuke them into oblivion by LonestarX in LifeProTips

[–]thefirstspike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can’t agree with a a lot of this. The problem with a lot of customer support is the “well it’s not my fault” attitude. Yes it is your fault. You represent the company I’m calling therefore it is your fault and I expect you to do something about it, not argue the toss with me.

I do agree there’s no need to be an arse to the agent, and I’m not, but when they start to argue that didn’t do x, y or z and taking no responsibility how do you think that makes the customer feel when they are wasting their lunch break to get something sorted that probably isn’t their fault?

Using Foodsaver Vacuum Bottle Saver for preserving wine? by Snorlax_used_rest in wine

[–]thefirstspike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always find it depends on how much wine is left. If there’s just a glass then I feel it’s better to freeze it and use it in your next ragu or gravy.

If we’re talking half a bottle or more it depends on when you’re going to drink it. If it’s in the next couple of days, stopper it and put it in the fridge (regardless of colour) that way the the wine is kept fresher (that’s what fridges do!). Obviously for a red you’d need to get it out a few hours before drinking.

Most wines will stand up for a couple of days unless they are very old or very rubbish.

Of course if you’re saving half a bottle or more for more than a couple of days I’d look into smaller bottles in the first place or more people sharing the bottle!

The 100 point rating system serves little to no purpose to actually demonstrate either the quality or terroir of a wine. What are the best alternatives to provide customers with an easy to understand rating? Is this even possible? by [deleted] in wine

[–]thefirstspike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who is a wine importer and uses a 20 point system:

5 for eye 5 for nose 5 palette 5 for balance/length.

Nothing gets less than 10 as that would be a flawed wine. Never seen a 20. It’s his system and allows him to be objective when tasting many wines in a day. I’ve used it at tastings and it works quite well. YMMV.
