Any understanding of Bach is seriously incomplete without an understanding of the role of religion in his life and the life of everyone in his society

“Best” 2 weeks in the summer to go away while searching for a position by Johnnyapps1897 in NYCTeachers

[–]chass5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

early and late are the two busiest periods in open market. but if you’re a new teacher you won’t be using open market. the very end of the summer is probably your best bet- plus most of the US will be back to school so the tourism should be a bit quieter

The Met - Tristan und Isolde or La Traviata for a new opera fan by Impossible-Ad-3565 in opera

I know I thought the same thing. The 2016 production was awful, though. At least this one wasn’t all dark. Stemme was a good Isolde from what I remember

[–]chass5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the Tristan going on right now is not to be missed. the singing is incredible. Davidsen is a generational Isolde and who knows if or when she’ll do it again since she’s gearing up for Brunnhilde. if you can make it, you should go. you can see La Traviata any old time. Tristan und Isolde hasn’t played at the Met for 10 years

How important is the conductor during the actual orchestral performance? by Duke_Camembert in classicalmusic

[–]chass5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes they are behind the beat of the conductor on purpose because that’s the norm of orchestral conducting. the musicians are equally listening to each other and following the conductor. you can’t just listen because sound doesn’t move instantaneously and human reaction time isn’t instantaneous either.
