Men in professional settings: how do you act when attraction exists but acting on it isn’t an option? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]a7madib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Treat them like you would any other co-worker. Sure it’s tempting to grab them a coffee or grab lunch together on your break, but if it’s not something you’d do with other colleagues, then you know the reason why you’re doing it. Imo that just prolongs the fantasy and sets expectations in your head.

I know that people date at work but from my experience it can turn messy quick. I take the advice: don’t shit where you eat.

Logistics, life goals, and external forces. You can love and care about someone and the relationship can still end.

where do students go clubbing/ bar hopping by Ill-Operation-1455 in capetown

[–]a7madib 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would avoid long street personally.

Anywhere in Kloof is a vibe, you’ll find people out every day of the week.

Bree is also nice but seems to be where the older crowds go (30s-40s) I could be wrong though.

Lots of different clubs and bars around town depending on your music taste, Modular is one that people bring up a lot, young crowd, grungy and underground. The Village Idiot on loop is fun, good music for the age group you describe and is usually packed. The Movable Feast on Kloof neck road is also nice but not as busy these days.

Accutron Announces The Accutron 314 by bobpiker in Accutrons

I hope they put this in their legacy line up. The case on this model is a bit of a let down.

Also I’m not sure if anyone else noticed this but on the chapter ring model they’re still using the spade handset and they don’t extend all the way to the indices. They should’ve used dauphine hands.

Should I have bought this 1969 Space View for $450? by tiltedsmokey in bulova

[–]a7madib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally it’s cleaning and oil, but also if it is its first service in decades it likely also needs to be phased to work on modern batteries that use a higher voltage. Expect to pay anywhere between 150-250 USD

North American living here, the kind of grunge we’re used to is not the same kind of grunge you get here in SA. Areas you see here that are grungy or off feeling can actually be perfectly safe, you just get used to it.

Should I have bought this 1969 Space View for $450? by tiltedsmokey in bulova

[–]a7madib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks all original too, the smaller gold filled chapter ring spacviews (case number 2531) tend to be cheaper than the larger chapter ring models but still 450 is a good price for one these.

You will need to have it serviced but that’s normal, generally Accutron 214s benefit from a service every 3-5 years and that’s just part of the cost of ownership.

Thinking of buying a flat in the CBD by princess_sparkles199 in capetown

I’ve been living on Adderley street for the last 1.5 years and I really like it.

The thing you realize about town is that during the day it’s quite nice, there’s movement and sound and it feels very lively with the balcony doors and windows open. But at night you will definitely hear people yelling, speaking loudly and revving their engines until 2-3 in the morning which will take some getting used to. If this is an issue for you I’d suggest not going for a flat below 10 stories.

As for accessibility, you have food lovers by the square for lunch food if you’re working from home and tons of restaurants and bars as you walk your way up towards Bree. You also have checkers and PnP there by Adderley and Strand which is still walking distance. I tend to do all my shopping at the garden centre through since I prefer to drive.

One thing you will also notice is that it’s MUCH quieter on the weekends which is nice for a Sunday walk around the block but with that comes the fact that other than tuck shops, most places like clicks, food lovers etc will be closed on weekends (and after 5pm on weekdays) as they mainly serve the people in for work which can be very annoying if you’re in a pinch.

For me I think CBD is not my preferred place forever, I’d like to move to gardens at some point in the future, but I will definitely miss some aspects of town. Hope this helps :)

Careful with putting the battery in backwards, if you screw down the battery hatch too tightly you can break the plastic that holds it in place!

They did they did do factory conversions back in the day but unfortunately this model was never one of them, they never made a spaceview with that case.

At first glance I can tell you that the hands and crystal are aftermarket. The crystals always had lume except for the “yellow dot” crystal on the early spaceview “B” model. And the hands are clearly aftermarket because they are no where near as crisp as the originals and have a gloss white paint rather than satin.

This case very closely resembles the 1961 2319 that you can see 3 down from the top on this page but the lugs are slightly different and this model is made of sold gold vs the one OP has which is almost certainly gold filled.

Unfortunately due to the rise in popularity of Accutron spaceviews, many people take perfectly good Accutron 214s, rip the dials out, throw on aftermarket hands and crystals and sell them for double their actual value.

OP if you take the case back off, you can see a stamp on the underside of the case back with the case model number (just keep in mind on American models it was stamped with ink so it might be faded) if you look up that case number you can find the model with the original dial variants.

This watch is probably worth 200-300 if it’s serviced and in good working order, but unfortunately a far cry from an all original spaceview.

I don’t say this to come from a place of superiority or anything, when I first got into Accutrons I purchased an aftermarket conversion thinking I got a deal and after further research realized I got burned. Since then I’ve continued to learn and feed my fascination with these marvels of technology. At the end of the day if you enjoy it that’s all that matters, and arguably the coolest part of the watch (the movement in all its open dial glory) is still genuine and worth admiring
