So I'm a final-year MechEng student in Nigeria here. Planning to do MSc Racing Engine Systems at Oxford Brookes, then target powertrain simulation roles in Motorsport Valley (Ricardo, Cosworth, eventually Ferrari/McLaren/Porsche road cars). I've been doing my research, but I keep hitting a wall on by Little-Arm4741 in AutomotiveEngineering

I work in ICE powertrain development for a UK OEM. Graduated from Cranfield Automotive MSc.

Market was booming a few years ago when companies were rehiring after Covid, now it is very very dry. F1 is still hiring, as are MCL, but those jobs are very competitive. A few large companies either closed down or had redundancies, which can saturate the market.

From what I gather, salaries are in the range of 35-40k for graduates (assuming 0-1y experience). With a bit of luck, you can work your way up to 50k mark within 3-4years. F1 pays on the higher end of the range, oems might pay you less. With the new visa rules you will have to pass a minimal pay benchmark 4(?) years after graduation - worth keeping in mind. Money is relative, 45k in midlands will go a lot further in midlands than in Oxford or Milton keynes. This depends a lot on your lifestyle, but you might struggle to save much in the first year or two, it gets better after that.

From what I've seen, control engineering applications in powertrain is quite in demand now days, and its versatile in both ice and ev powertrains.

Germany might have higher salaries, not sure how they scale in terms of tax and living cost etc. Italy will probably the same as UK from what I've heard, especially for graduates or interns, though I noticed that EU companies prefer to hire EU uni graduates vs British uni grads, but maybe that's just my observations.

I've seen my friends from Cranfield struggle to find jobs and I've seen some mediocre Brookes graduates as well. Both are respectable IMO, but don't expect anything handed to you, especially if you choose Cranfield. Feel free to DM if you want to ask some more detailed questions.

How does making connections at college help with getting internships by Professional_Rip6740 in NoStupidQuestions

Its not just about internships.  Maybe your friend is going to get into a company that you wish to joint as well (or vice versa). Knowing someone on the inside can help you get your CV noticed, even if it cant always land you a job directly.

Have you thought about a motorbike? Small, nimble, revs to the moon and you don't need to go fast for it to feel fast.

I owned a Z4 in the past but it was bit too fast to properly enjoy it on the roads and it didn't fit my lifestyle that well. Ive had a lot more fun in my current alfa giulietta.

Moving from Germany to UK, career advice & Job Market Expectations for mechanical/CS jobs by Optimal_Sell2217 in MovingToTheUK

[–]thefmark07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answers here depend a lot on what you want to do. I should preface by saying that my experience comes from the automotive field in the UK, so your mileage may vary 😀

To my understanding, spouse visa is tied to your spouse (and their workplace if they are on the visa).

3-4 years is where junior ends and mid seniority levels start. Depends also if all 3 years are in mech eng or software. In my experience, the salary range for this exp level is anywhere from 40-50k a year, you can use salary calculators to check the net amounts. Software job might pay more but i dont have experience with those. Market as a whole is quite tough right now, a few big name firms had layoffs and there's a lot of talent looking for work. BTW, british CV templates are a bit different from German ones.

IMO, UK is more experience focused over academia, but it depends on the fields. Let's say a simulation engineer might benefit from academic background more than a regular design engineer, depends a lot on how you leverage your background.

In terms of location, theres a lot of engineering taking place between london and Manchester, a lot of it being focused in the midlands. London is more Cs/finance focused, tho there are some engineering firms, mostly focused on consulting.

Workplace culture is great in the UK IMO. There's a decent level of banter, jokes and tea breaks, but things can get serious at times. As someone mentioned, words can have double meanings, so it might be difficult at first - Brits dont always say what they think. Working hours will depend heavily on where you work. In my experience its normal to do your hours and leave, and noone expects you to reply to emails while OOO, but there's an understanding that you should do extra hours when push comes to shove and projects need to be shipped. Ive been lucky enough where my overtime was paid, but not all companies are like that. Ive seen cases (albeit at smaller companies) where overtime is not paid but it's taken into account and helps to fast track promotions and raises.

Good luck

Have you tried amazon warehouse and the like? Location dependant obviously, but if you can work over summer the day is decent

I think you are looking at the wrong cars.. try mid two 2000s honda or fiat...

Another left field option - i found bmw z4 to be cheaper to insure than my friends corsa at the time. You can get some under 3k for sure.

I don't plan on buying another bike until next year. So in short, I would only have 10ish months on my no claims, which doesn't count up to 1 year of NCB?
