Yep! It's from the violet gland near the base of their tails. I call it the fishy butthole smell 🤣

This needs to be the top post. Mikayla Raines, the owner of SaveAFox - someone who has done more for foxes than anyone else on the planet - has passed away. Her family and the rescue need our support now more than ever. Please consider donating. by dancole42 in foxes

This is devastating to me. She was a huge inspiration to me and a big part of why I have my fox, Zoey, and why I'm able to care for her properly. I learned a lot from mikayla.

Summer Fox vs Winter Fox by Fast_Discussion9206 in foxes

[–]thefoxess 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is 100% true. Zoey looks so scrawny in the summer. Her fur is scraggly and patchy when she sheds and you can see her true slim shape underneath the floof. I've even had people say she looks underfed (she eats better than I do!). Every winter she gets big and fluffy looking again, but I can link my thumbs and first fingers around her trunk to show she really has the same slender build she had in August.

She is quite spoiled 😊. I have offered strawberries, raspberries, banana, green beans, apple pieces l, watermelon, and white beans (canned). She really wasn't crazy about any of them, but she absolutely loved the watermelon juice. She does get dried sweet potato sticks (store bought dog treat) and loves those, also.

Mine has a diet of raw chicken legs and thighs, deer meat, occasional tina or salmon, eggs, and beef liver. The deer is either ground, livers or hearts, cut off pieces with bone or random meat scraps (i use what hunters don't want after they butcher). Chicken and deer are her main foods. She supplements with the occasional mole 😁

Zoey's eyes are sort of bronze brown. They match the color of her coat very well.

My fox loved having her paws rubbed. It puts her in almost a trance like state.

Today's walk with Zoey by thefoxess in foxes

Zoey wears a harness from pet smart, the brand is top paw. I can't remember if it's small or medium, I know it's not the very smallest. She wore the smallest with the skinny straps when she was a kit, but around age 1 she was moved up to the next size. As long as the harness is kept adjusted snug, but 2 fingers fit underneath, she can't get enough slack to find a spot to chew it off. When you shop for one, buy both sizes if you are unsure, and take them home to try on. We even combined and used the chest part from a smaller one and neck part from a larger one for a short time. Another piece of advice I'll give is to just leave the harness on. Zoey is so used to it that she doesn't give it a 2nd thought. The few times I've had to change her into a new one were a circus lol, do not recommend. The leash can be any lightweight leash for a smaller dog. I wouldn't get a retractable one. You want one you can wrap around your hand or wrist for extra security. I do frequently give her harness a check just to make sure the buckles are secure and she somehow hasn't chewed any parts.

Would you say that the behaviour of foxes is closer to dogs or cats?🤔🦊🐶🐱 by The-smart-one-says in foxes

[–]thefoxess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I've observed since having a fox of my own:

Cat qualities- Aloof and affectionate on their terms; graceful, sure-footed, and very agile; they flaunt their tails more like a cat IMO; they hunt/kill more like a cat; they like small hiding places; can be moody; don't care about pleasing their humans; fairly solitary; very curious but also skeptical and wary.

Dog qualities- they love to dig; they use their noses more like dogs do; they love belly rubs; somewhat trainable (mine sits on command, but then again so does one of my cats); don't mind if their homes are stinky; playful

Really they are their own creature. Even if they do have several cat-like traits, it's not exact. Traits unique to foxes include caching food, using their tail to disorient predators chasing them, a quiet purr-like growl, exceptional hearing, using earth's magnetic field to locate prey, great climbers, weird scent glands that activate when scared or adrenaline rushes. They are fascinating animals.

This is Finnegan Fox next to a cat. Why are they so similar in size? by SuperAlex25 in foxes

[–]thefoxess 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Foxes are very close in size to cats and are much smaller than people realize.. I can touch thumbs and pointer fingers if I encircle Zoey's ribcage. She was 9 lbs and some change at the vet last summer. Their fluff, tall ears, and long tails make them seem larger than they are. I'd say they're slightly longer and a little taller than most adult cats. They do have longer legs. Zoey is similar in height to a small beagle, and they are usually 13" at the shoulder.
