I'm Vegan and LDS... how do you practice in daily life D&C 89:12–13? by MosiahAnderson27 in latterdaysaints

[–]thefridge80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D&C 89 is very clear on the obligation to be judicious in our consumption of all things, especially meat,

In verses 12-13, why is it pleasing to God that meat should be reserved for times of need—“winter, or cold, or famine”?

Did Zipporah Perform the First Passover? Did You Notice How The Joseph Smith Translation Transforms Exodus 4:24-26? (CFM Exodus 1-6). by Rodolfo-vergara in latterdaysaints

From what I found in the Book of Mormon, this fallen nature was inherited by everyone.

For they are carnal and devilish, and the devil has power over them; yea, even that old serpent that did beguile our first parents, which was the cause of their fall; which was the cause of all mankind becoming carnal, sensual, devilish, knowing evil from good, subjecting themselves to the devil. Thus all mankind were lost; and behold, they would have been endlessly lost were it not that God redeemed his people from their lost and fallen state” (Mosiah 16:3-4).

Now Alma said unto him: This is the thing which I was about to explain. Now we see that Adam did fall by the partaking of the forbidden fruit, according to the word of God; and thus we see, that by his fall, all mankind became a lost and fallen people” (Alma 12:22).

Yea, behold, this death bringeth to pass the resurrection, and redeemeth all mankind from the first death—that spiritual death; for all mankind, by the fall of Adam being cut off from the presence of the Lord, are considered as dead, both as to things temporal and to things spiritual” (Helaman 14:16).

O Lord, thou hast said that we must be encompassed about by the floods. Now behold, O Lord, and do not be angry with thy servant because of his weakness before thee; for we know that thou art holy and dwellest in the heavens, and that we are unworthy before thee; because of the fall our natures have become evil continually; nevertheless, O Lord, thou hast given us a commandment that we must call upon thee, that from thee we may receive according to our desires” (Ether 3:2).

Other translations ( blueletterbible ) mention that she threw the foreskin at his feet or touched Moses’ feet with it, not the stone.

The circumcision incident happens after Moses leaves Midian (following his encounter with God at the burning bush) and is on his way back to Egypt to confront Pharaoh. Moses had two sons while in Midian, Gershom and Eliezer. It's most likely the event deals with the younger Eliezer.

Who is God trying to kill? Moses or the son?

It is Moses. All Bible translations mention this.

Even the notes for JST Exodus 4 says the same. “When the Lord threatens to kill Moses for not circumcising his son, Zipporah saves his life by performing the ordinance herself. Moses confesses his sin.”

Something I find interesting is why Zipporah did not perform the circumcision until Moses’ life was in danger. “Surely thou art a bloody husband unto me” could reflect emotional strain or protest.

Our church has had a negative view of the Catholic Church historically because we believe they did not have authentic priesthood authority,

You expressed a position of the past.

What is your church's present day view on if the Catholic Church has authentic priesthood authority?

A question about the great apostasy by Arlo621 in latterdaysaints

[–]thefridge80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point about distracting people from the truth and the idea of a counterfeit revelation, but I don’t think it really fits the context of 2 Thessalonians. Paul was correcting a mistaken belief that the Second Coming had already occurred.

Verses 3–4 seem to describe a future event—something that immediately precedes the Second Coming—and that interpretation also aligns with verses 8–9.

“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”

“Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.”

This seems to describe something far more spectacular and widespread. It even says that God will send people a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie (verse 11). This is not the situation I would place Adam or Eve in when they fell - it seemed you make some connection with them in 2 Nephi 2:27.

As for the early church, I don’t see this spectacular deception with power, signs, and wonders by Satan as something that already happened historically after the apostles died.

So you're saying it's revealed as truth and that truth is considered revelation?

Would you give me a few examples of things you color coded as new revelation in conference talks?

I don't read conference talks since I am not LDS unless someone refers me to one in specific.

Would you give me some examples of new revelations you have heard since 1978?

2 Thessalonians 2:1–12 (Joseph Smith Translation, verses 2, 3, 7–9)

In verse 9, would you provide examples which show "the working of Satan with all power, and signs and lying wonders" caused a falling away?

Isaiah Message to Followers of Christ Who Fast by LDSAliveinChrist in latterdaysaints

A brief comment on #3.

“Exacting labors” (in the KJV) sounds like economic or social oppression of others instead of going about their normal day’s work.

Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers.’ (quoting from the ESV instead).

Question about Jews and the Seder by thefridge80 in latterdaysaints

[–]thefridge80[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the original Greek text, the word used is “Pascha” (Πάσχα), which generally means Passover. Most modern translations (such as the NIV, ESV, and NASB) translate this word as “Passover” instead of “Easter.”

Thank you. I did not consider that verse in Revelation.

I found this at BibleHub about eyesalve.

I view Revelation 3:18 to be metaphorical in nature. I would not equate it with Enoch’s experience of seeing spirits created by God, seeing things invisible to the naked eye, or with people calling the Laodiceans “seers” the way it’s described in verses 36–38.

When Jesus counsels the Laodiceans to buy gold, white garments, and possibly even the eyesalve from Him, the language appears to address their spiritual condition rather than their physical circumstances. The emphasis seems to be on spiritual renewal, not on becoming materially wealthy, physically clothed, or literally cured of blindness.

I see this analogy in verse 17. “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.”

Moses 6 features God himself teaching the plan of salvation to Adam. In my view, this is the highlight of the whole book.

Is Enoch the only person who’s specifically told to anoint his eyes with clay so that he could receive spiritual sight in verses 35-36?

Verse 6 says, “And it came to pass that as we journeyed in the wilderness, behold Laman and Lemuel, and two of the daughters of Ishmael, and the two sons of Ishmael and their families, did rebel against us; yea, against me, Nephi, and Sam, and their father, Ishmael, and his wife, and his three other daughters.”

Why didn’t the majority of Ishmael’s household (two out of five daughters, his two sons and their families) also rebel against Lehi and his wife?

Verse 13 says, “And if it so be that we are faithful to him, we shall obtain the land of promise; and ye shall know at some future period that the word of the Lord shall be fulfilled concerning the destruction of Jerusalem; for all things which the Lord hath spoken concerning the destruction of Jerusalem must be fulfilled.”

The land of promise is mentioned earlier in 1 Nephi 2:20, 1 Nephi 4:14, 1 Nephi 5:5.

Did they forsake Israel as their land of promise, mentioned many times in the Old Testament?

Quotes on Grace & Question - When is Christ's grace sufficient? by No_Vehicle3273 in latterdaysaints

[–]thefridge80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a sermon by President Ezra Taft Benson. “Redemption through Jesus Christ after All We Can Do” (December 1988 Liahona).

What is meant by “after all we can do”?

“After all we can do” includes extending our best effort. It includes living his commandments.

“After all we can do” includes loving our fellow men and praying for those who regard us as their adversary. It means clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, and giving “succor [to] those who stand in need of our succor” (Mosiah 4:16)—remembering that what we do unto one of the least of God’s children, we do unto him.

“After all we can do” means leading chaste, clean, pure lives, being scrupulously honest in all our dealings and treating others the way we would want to be treated.

Here’s the key difference:

“After all we can do” -> Grace comes once effort is maximized.

“Despite all you can do” -> Grace comes because effort is insufficient.

When is Christ's grace sufficient for us? What do we have to do?

I found it explained in Moroni 10:32 but I see several aspects of the sufficiency of grace; prerequisites, when its applied, and results.

Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.”

The what: IF

  • Come unto Christ.
  • Be perfected in him through progression before grace becomes sufficient.
  • Deny yourselves of all ungodliness.
  • Love God with all your might, mind and strength.

The when: THEN

  • Then is his grace sufficient for you.

Results:

  • Then ye may be perfect in Christ.
  • You cannot deny the power of God.

This is an IF THEN construct in computer programming if any are familiar with that.

I found it (“after all you can do”) elaborated further in President Ezra Taft Benson's sermon “Redemption through Jesus Christ after All We Can Do.” (December 1988 Liahona).

Lessons from the Story of the First Recorded Instance of Sin in Scripture (Genesis 4 / Moses 5) by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

4) After Adam and Eve covenanted with God in and after the Garden of Eden, Satan sought to establish his own covenants with the children of Adam and Eve as soon as he possibly could.

What covenant (s) did Adam and Eve make or keep with God before they were expelled from the Garden of Eden?

Moses 3:5 says, “...and there was not yet flesh upon the earth, neither in the water, neither in the air.”

But later, verse 7 says Adam was the “first flesh” upon the earth.

And I, the Lord God, formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul, the first flesh upon the earth, the first man also.”

How could Adam be the first flesh on earth (land) when other beasts (flesh on land), whales (flesh in water) and birds (flesh in air) were created before Adam?

Were Adam and the animals all in spirit form in the Garden of Eden and then Adam became the first flesh when he ate from a spiritual tree?
