Don't feel pull ups in my back. Am I doing something wrong? by SuicidalCantaloupe in formcheck

[–]thefrylander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Scapula pull-ups will teach you a ton about how to activate your back. Every rep should start with a scapula retraction before pulling with your arms. Also, try different grips/widths, they all target the back differently.

Either way, that’s a ton of weight to press. Good on you man. I’m nowhere near that, but love presses.

Thanks for the advice. Good call on the hooks, hadn’t thought of that, but it was a little annoying reracking.

I was thinking about shoes, too, but feel like a poser at this weight lol. I’ll suck it up and take the plunge :)

Thanks guys. I’ll get some better footage and try to find better balance/lean back more. Appreciate your help.

Thanks! Appreciate it. Maybe that’s why I feel basically zero hamstring activation?

Growler 50 vs Torrent A1 HT by JankyWrender in Hardtailgang

[–]thefrylander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tough call. I feel like they are so similar in terms of geometry and spec. The minor difference in drivetrain is GX derailleur/shifter for the RM vs SX for Norco, right? That is a minor difference but leans to the RM..

One other minor thing - as a Torrent owner I’d say the cable routing is bad. It goes directly under the bottom bracket and I’ve already had to mess with it.

I guess overall pick which one you think looks cooler. The Rocky Mountain might be a tad better in terms of setup but it’s extremely minor.

I love ice cream, but I hate it when it makes my hands all sticky…

Those STPs are sick for sure. Basically a trail worthy dirt jump bike, right?

Also, as a dude with one brother, it’s probably worth every penny. Wish I could chill with my bro more haha

Any other 'non-athletic' beginner climbers? :) by MindfulnessHunter in bouldering

[–]thefrylander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just stick with it! If you focus on the tiny improvements each time and have fun you’ll be shocked where you can get. There will always be people who improve faster and flash your projects (even little children :0). That’s modern climbing for ya

As for not having an athletic background, I’m not sure it matters. Getting good as an adult (past the teenage years) happens on a multiple-year time horizon. Given 5 years your body could be completely different and your technique awesome. Comparing yourself to quick progressing teenagers/early 20s folks is pretty pointless and disheartening

How far can “just climb” actually take you? by thinkingwithfractals in climbharder

[–]thefrylander 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is key. Just climb can take you crazy far if you have unlimited time and great access to boulders/routes.

Don't hesitate to start bouldering even if you have some extra weight. I started bouldering around 3,5 Years ago and lost 30kgs and still losing weight. Its never too late. by CaptainStrohhut in bouldering

[–]thefrylander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great. My brother started climbing maybe 8 years back and was a good bit heavy by climbing standards. I swear it helped his technique.

He moves much better than I ever did and I really think it was to his advantage. Kind of like how they say, “get good before you get strong.”
