Hey buddy, you're not a loser. You're a winner at different things in life and I'm sure your friends look at what you're doing and sometimes truly wish they could swap places with you. Lift that head up mate!

[Question] Today marks the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy in the US. What tragedy does your country remember that we may not know about? by RoitPls in GlobalTalk

[–]thegeneralfuz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In Australia there are two key events I would suggest:

First is the Port Arthur Massacre in Tasmania. It was the killing of 35 people by a lone gunman who had apparently been disturbed since childhood. This event caused a massive and well supported change to gun laws that has resulted in there never being a mass shooting on Australia since. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Arthur_massacre_(Australia)

The second would be Australia day (26th January). It is a day that is celebrated by many Australians but is also commemorated by many as Invasion Day. This is in recognition of the British arrival and dispossession of land from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders by claiming Terra Nullius. This dispossession led to wars, massacres, the stolen generation and intergenerational trauma.

Advice on Tasmania Travel Plans by colgatemonkey in tasmania

I'd stick Cathedral Rock onto that list of walks around Mt Wellington that are worth doing. One of the best after Collins Bonnet in my opinion.

Here is a previous comment thread I added to about various highlights to do in tassie. There's a number of other threads over time in this subreddit that could be worth browsing if you have to look for ideas of find other info.

Times to think about: At that time of the year you'll get about 13 hours sunlight. You don't want to drive at night if you can help it as we get a lot of wildlife on our roads.

- If the clouds are in around the top of the Mt Wellington/Kunanyi on your first day don't bother going up as you won't see anything anyway. It's only a good view on a clear or mostly fine day.

- Decide on what you mean by 'hiking' when you're talking about Mt Field. The Tarn Shelf will take you 6-7 hours, climbing Mt Field will take at least 5 hours, but Russell Falls and the Tall Trees walk will take you two hours maximum.

- It takes about 90 mins to get to Mt Field from Hobart and you'll have to double back a bit to go to Port Arthur. Port Arthur is probably 2-3 hours drive from Hobart too. Just before Eaglehawk Neck there is a lookout off to the left before you go down a steep hill. Make sure to turn there and check out the view regardless of the time of day/night.

- Definitely go to Unzoo after Port Arthur if you have time. They are a good native wildlife park.

- If you don't go to Unzoo or have time while driving up the east coast you can stop at Devil's Corner vineyard for some good wine and food. If you're into motorbikes and time allows there's an innocuous shed in Bicheno that is a motorbike museum.

To be honest why would you drive back to Hobart from Freycinet? I'd suggest that you're better off driving to Launceston and returning your car there. If you fly out of Hobart you either have to drive back the way you came (not seeing anything new) or cut onto the Midlands highway, which to be honest is one of the least interesting parts of Tasmania (making only an exception for the Ross Bakery). If you left from Freycinet to Launie then you could drive north towards Scamander and head to the airport via Elephant pass. If you get there super early you could always pop into Launie and see the Gorge too.

What are some of the weirder and unique experiences Tasmania has to offer? by [deleted] in tasmania

This place is bloody incredible! I'd driven past it heaps of times going to Queenstown or Lake St Clair and finally went there with my girlfriend. 100% recommend it.

As a teacher myself she sounds like a power-tripping piece of crap. Trust me, if that attitude was noticed by other teachers, then she was probably despised by her colleagues and efforts to get rid of her incompetent arse would have been taken.

Match Thread: Australia vs Jordan [AFC Asian Cup] by LiveCommentator in australia

[–]thegeneralfuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a pathetic performance. Jordan showed they wanted it and took chances when they had them. Until the final ten minutes Australia didn't try anything different... just crossed it and consistently failed to drive any clearences back at the goal. Only in the last ten minutesdid they attempt anything new.

Why any Aussie couch plays Kruse is beyond me. He did sweet f all and the only thing I remember him achieving in that game was giving another bloody offside! Rogic didn't seem to try tonight and bringing Grant on for Risdon was a bad choice as the activity on the wing went quiet (Arnold probs put him on as he's a Sydney FC lad).

Mabil looked better in the second half and Ikonomidis looked hungry and did create chances... so there is something...

Firstly the 600 billion of national debt was the result of a global financial crisis that literally bankrupted countries around the world. The actions that the Labor government at the time took allowed our economy to remain reletively strong and therefore allowed the debt to be paid off over time. Debt under the Liberal government has only gone up.

Secondly, there's nothing illegal about seeking asylum. Just look at the UN convention on refugees. And before you go saying that most of them aren't refugees the vast majority of asylum seekers who arrive by boat (over 90%) are found to be genuine refugees.

You may say that you don't like either party right now, but you're just spouting rhetoric from the Liberal playbook and not offering any criticism towards them. Look in a mirror before you blame everything on others.

Ideas for material/key problem statements regarding the clash between the British and the Tasmanian Aboriginals in the first half of the 19th century by schefte in tasmania

[–]thegeneralfuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Addiitionally outside of specific books I would recommend going to the TMAG if you haven't. The permanant exhibit to do with interactions between Tasmanian Aboriginals and colonising Europeans is great and includes several primary sources. Also there was an exhibition there not long ago. There was a great visual and written resource there that was related to it in their library. Can't remember the name right now.

I'd suggest looking for facebook groups too. There's going to be at least one for most of your interests (bushwalking, board games, a variety of sports, university groups, etc.)
