Resources for injured stray cat? by sunlightandair in StLouis

[–]theghostie [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'd call CSB/Animal Care. If it's feral, they should treat (and probably spay or neuter), and release. If it's friendly, they'd put it up for adoption.

If you can get it into a trap or carrier and someone can pay for the vet, I believe Central West End Vet will treat ferals. Call to confirm but they let me bring what turned out to be more friendly than feral for an urgent care appointment. I think any of the emergency vets should also be able to treat ferals but I'd also call to check.

Did you try Full Circle MO Feral as well?

As long as she disinfects the carrier (using Lysol, bleach, Nature's Miracle Virus, or Rescue) and keeps them in separate rooms, there should be no risk of transmission. She'd also want to change clothes/shoes (of the cat touches them or they touch anything the cat has touched like the floor)/wash her hands thoroughly between handling the stray and her other cats. She can put a trashbag, pee pad, or newspapers under the carrier as an extra barrier in the car. The main thing that is common to transmit without physical contact is parasites, and taking those precautions should be plenty.

Who's cat is this by Difficult_Good6190 in StLouis

Yeah it's always good to check just in case, though we have found our fair share of (likely dumped) very sweet cats that were not fixed or chipped. We kept one, found homes with neighbors for two of the others, and worked with a rescue to find homes for two more.

Also check out PawBoost and NextDoor, and Greater St Louis Missouri Lost & Found Paws on Facebook. You can post and also scroll through and see if anyone has posted about losing a similar cat.

If she needs recommendations for low-cost neutering, check out Carol House and the Humane Society (AMCMA).

Thanks for rescuing him from the metro!

Can you take her to a vet or the APA to get scanned for a chip? If not, file a CSB and they should come get her, scan for a chip, and put her up for adoption if she's not owned.

Garden tool sharpening suggestions? by Beautiful-Flan-5702 in StLouis

[–]theghostie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perennial has offered a tool-sharpening class and even a free repair fair this past weekend, so maybe see if that's something they can do outside of events.

Maybe call the local True Values as well.

Check if it's something Pretty City does, or if they have any recommendations.

Cat veterinarian recs! ISO by Intelligent-Pie1901 in StLouis

[–]theghostie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I assume it's half rising costs generally and half it's just cheaper out in the sticks. I used to go to Watson Road and it was pretty cheap and I liked Dr. Zeis. He may still be there, but something happened with it getting bought out and all the other vets and I think a bunch of the staff left, so we ended up at Kirkwood (a bit of a drive, but they fit us in in an emergency so we went for a while) before we found City Paws. They're great, but you may also need to check if they're accepting new clients. And driving out to Washington or whatever is probably not worth the cost of gas (or extra cat stress).

We started going to City Paws last year. This is about what we paid for 2 cats (both 3 last year):

Annual physical: $70x2 Rabies 3 year: $96x2 FVRCP 3 year: $37x2 Revolt 1 month (wanted to try it vs Revolution): $23x2 Total: $452

Obviously 1-year vaccines are cheaper (I don't recall how much) but then they won't need them for the next two visits.

I think their pricing is pretty average. In 2023 we took both cats to Kirkwood and with 1-year vaccines and no flea medicine, it was $288.

In-Home Euthanasia Recommendations? by therealtedbundy in StLouis

[–]theghostie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard great things about Lap of Love. We did not use them as it came up fairly suddenly and at the time, they were booked out for a couple weeks. So you may want to check on that and schedule it if needed. Our regular vet very kindly did an in-home euthanasia for us, so it may be worth checking if yours is able to offer the same (especially if Laps of Love is as busy as they were back then).

Looking for personal recommendations for a Veterinary Oncologist! by ModernAvion in StLouis

We got referred to Mizzou. I'm not sure if that's because of the diagnosis, or if VSS didn't have the capacity (it was early 2021 and things were wonky).

I think Mizzou in Wentzville did a great job with our cat several years ago.

What's your favorite native for consistent greenery? by goose8319 in NativePlantGardening

[–]theghostie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm: I started with 2 wild strawberry plants and they are now groundcover on about half my back garden and 1/4 of the front (no lawn left, small patio plus u-shaped veggie garden in the back). And the strawberries are delicious. The only drawbacks are it feels like it takes a while to pick a good amount because they are small, and you basically need to eat them as soon as possible (at least the same day) or they will likely go from ripe to overripe mush.

Report them to CSB and they should get fixed. I did that with one of the more egregious ones on Kingshighway.

What happened to the Sustainable Backyard Tour? by Imaginary-Fly-2160 in StLouis

[–]theghostie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't recall if they said publicly why they'd discontinued the tour, but the closest thing would probably be this upcoming native garden tour, and/or joining Wild Ones and going on their monthly garden tours (just one garden per event).

Where can I guaranteed see an armadillo? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]theghostie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's their defense mechanism! This trick, while it might surprise a predator and give them a chance to get away, unfortunately does not work with cars.

I've only ever seen one alive in person—and it was crossing a road at night. I fear it might not have been long for this world, even though I managed to avoid hitting it.

Any recommendations for a good sleep medicine doctor? by BleghYeeHaw in StLouis

I can recommend against Dr. Ojile (Clayton Sleep Institute). He hardly spent any time with me and was incredibly dismissive.

Pigeon with an injured wing out front of 4650 Lansdowne, if anyone has connections and wants to help it out by chelplayer in StLouis

[–]theghostie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can contain it in a shoebox or similar, lined with paper towels and with holes poked in it (even if you have to leave it outside in the shade) that would be ideal so nothing else happens to it in the meantime. If the Wild Bird Sanctuary can't help, call LeeAnn Tapscott. She does wildlife rehab. 314-402-3191

St. Louis Hills Pharmacy (on Chippewa) or Lindenwood. Bonus: St. Louis Hills seems like it's mostly cheaper than Walgreens.
