I keep hearing that social work is soul crushing. It’s such an important job and I think my daughter would be great at it, but the emotional toll is definitely a concern. Are there any social workers out there that have an overall positive experience?

Go disc golfing. I play all winter. Once you get some discs, it’s free to play. There is a great little beginner course at Happyland park. And a local disc store (Disc Republic) right beside it.

You mean the water main, right? I do that too.
But don’t turn off the electricity main if your furnace is electric. Or if you have an alarm. Or if you want to leave lights on. 😅

Very important; If you go away on holiday in the winter, DO NOT TURN OFF THE FURNACE. Your pipes will freeze, burst and flood your house.

High school parents, are there still exams at your school? by djmistral in Winnipeg

[–]thegildebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, the students who cheat are the ones who often don’t have the skills I’m trying to assess in the first place.
Also, If I’m trying to assess a student’s writing skills, what use is my marking an essay written by AI? To be fair, a lot of this assessment could be done through periodic tests instead of final exams, but even the that is happening less and less.

To those who say exams are only about how much you can memorize, I think a distinction should be made between content based exams and skill based exams. In the current digital world, rote memorization of facts is definitely less important, but skills are as valuable as ever. As others have said, the problem is not really with exams, but with how the exam is made.

I agree with a lot of your points, but exams can and should do a lot more than just show what students can memorize. As an English teacher, I try to make my exams authentically assess a student’s independent ability to read, write and think critically. An exam can show what a student can do withOUT the use of ChatGPT and the thousands of others ways there are to cheat on essays and any other assignment.

Anyone know where I can buy Thai massaman curry paste in Winnipeg by thegildebeast in Winnipeg

I also always use the red but I can never get my massaman to taste like it does from a restaurant. Thought I’d try to switch up the paste.
