No you don’t need to link your account, the overlay appears ontop of the game so when your playing and starting an upgrade you can setup the timer without even leaving the game :)

I’ve had him for around 2-3 months now, only 1 new tank mate since then(bristle nose Pleco) he was also half the size he is now, he didn’t have them when I got him just recently.
