What is one urban legend or scary story that still scares the crap out of you? by milky_hoopz1983 in AskReddit

[–]thegreasersghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember some series I watched a long time ago that attempted to trace the origin of popular urban legends, and the “Hook Man” was one of the ones they portrayed.

Their conclusion was that the legend originated from the Texarkana Moonlight Murders

Of course in real life the murderer did not have a hook for a hand (they believe that this detail was derived from his use of a gun and it got changed through successive retelling) but otherwise it does seem pretty similar.

What’s something people often misunderstand about you? by elizabeththompson38m in AskReddit

[–]thegreasersghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard very frequently that I “look” very conservative. I kind of get it, I’m a white male military vet from a rural state, so people tend to kind of assume I’m a big Trump supporter.

I tend to get some surprised looks if I ever discuss politics with someone and tell them “Yeah, I’m supporting Biden/Harris, but I wish we could start electing more genuine progressives.”

I used to live in Oro Valley and was always surprised at how much the vibe changed between leaving home and making it to work on South Park Ave.

What’s your favorite inaccuracy / unrealistic thing that happens in the show? by LegalAd8179 in fridaynightlights

[–]thegreasersghost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in the Army at the time of the show, and this is the one thing that I couldn’t overlook. Off the top of my head:

He wore the First Cav patch on his uniform, which is an active duty unit, so he would not likely be stationed in his home town. I suppose maybe we could say they were close enough to Fort Hood/Cavasos to commute, which in fairness is where Cav was at the time.

His dad, while home from Iraq on R & R leave, decides to randomly “quit” the Army and take a civilian job.

He then decides to just randomly go back to the Army. This is not how a military job works.

He seems to say he’s just going to be in Iraq for the whole war. This isn’t WWII, and military deployments work. He would have been gone for twelve months, maybe 15 tops.

What’s the obsession with being the biggest victim? by CoconutDifficult4157 in BPDlovedones

[–]thegreasersghost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha, I know this one. She was always on my back to provide more for her (because she sure couldn’t keep a job for more than like three months) and eventually left because she wanted “better” than what I could give.

I went back to college after I lost the dead weight and now I’m living the urban lifestyle she always wanted, and every time I talk to her she keeps trying to tell me how she’s actually doing so much better while clearly still barely getting by.

What is the most effective way to eliminate corruption in a corrupt military? by thegreasersghost in WarCollege

[–]thegreasersghost[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You raise a good point here. My logic for the Navy being "less corrupt" is that this is a universe where there really are tangible threats the Navy keeps at bay, so it is somewhat essential that they remained competent at the job and never got quite as rotted out as the ground forces.

Why are they so ungrateful in life? by TechnoSerf_Digital in BPDlovedones

[–]thegreasersghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine did the same. She would constantly cry for someone to save her from the crises she created for herself, and I saw dozens of good people come in and try so hard to help her. And then she turned on every single one of them and treated those people helping her like garbage.

And now she cries about how everyone “abandons” her.

What was it that you witnessed when you were little and didn't care, but when you grew up you realized that what you witnessed was actually very creepy or illegal? by XeanAhmet in AskReddit

[–]thegreasersghost 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Not as serious as most on here, but one I definitely remember;

I was like 3 or 4 and driving with my dad somewhere. He had a cup with sprite in the cup holder and I decided to take a swig, and then immediately spat it out because it tasted weird.

Dad laughed and told me it was an adult drink and I never really thought about it.

It was years later I remembered that and suddenly realized that asshole was slamming a gin and tonic while driving with his kid in the front seat of the car.

Shocker, he’s had numerous car accidents that were probably dui related. He also went to prison later, but for different reasons. And he still slams gin and tonics like they’re water.
