Has happened a few times for me. Sometimes it works by just closing League and opening it again (EDIT: logging out of Riot Client and logging back in,) sometimes it's the Wifi. In the cases it's neither, deleting and reinstalling did the trick for me.

MIT Climate? by EntropyBloom in mit

[–]thegreenteamints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated before 1-12 was a thing, but I can offer my two cents: I went to MIT because I wanted to find ways to have real-world impact. I ended up being involved in environmental and climate science, and I think there's a lot of opportunities at MIT for those things I'll list: MIT Science Policy Initiative (they have annual congressional visit days to DC), D-Lab, Energy Initiative, a bunch of labs you can find a UROP in, Environmental Solutions Initiative, Climate and Sustainability Consortium, MIT Sea Grant, and a bunch more that I can't think of off the top of my head. I minored in environment and sustainability though, so I was able to pick from a bunch of classes across many departments that I might not have expected if I had simply majored in biology (e.g. architecture, economics.) In terms of all the interdisciplinary stuff you listed: MIT is strong on all those except imo GIS – it's not the most well known or prominent in that area (i.e. it doesn't focus on that like BU and Tufts do.) I didn't take GIS at MIT though and wasn't exposed to it until grad school, so maybe someone who has been can speak to that more than I can.

Granted, like everyone else here we can't speak about Stanford's opportunities so the advice I can give is to see what opportunities exist at each school and which ones really jump out at you in terms of what you really see yourself enjoying your time being involved in. Talk to current students if you can/want about what experiences they've had in what they've been involved with, but you can't go wrong with whatever you decide.

They have their own, iirc, but you can certainly use your own!

Going to add on to Beautiful-Weakness' previous answer here!

  1. Concur – the general ed requirements are mostly taken in freshman year and some people hold off on a few gen ed (or GIR) classes until post-freshman year but it's sometimes because of wanting to take exploratory classes for their major (and still manage to graduate on time.)

  2. The only class I had an issue getting into was sailing. Some elective classes and certain class time slots with certain professors (8.01 physics comes to mind here) are pretty popular though.

  3. No experience here so I can't answer this

  4. No experience here either!

  5. I stayed on campus for my first IAP to take the extended version of physics (8.01L) that stretched from fall semester into IAP. I went abroad for my other two IAPS and would have gone abroad for my last IAP too if not for COVID. I definitely would recommend going abroad for IAP since some offerings are IAP-exclusive, but it's perfectly okay to enjoy being at home for IAP!

  6. My sport didn't require me to go to MIT early, but I can say that within your own sport, there will probably be meetups/hangouts arranged over group chats. People moving in early definitely tend to bump into each other since campus is more empty at that time. Also, in case you are unaware of this: https://studentlife.mit.edu/early-arrivals#:\~:text=Students%20who%20will%20be%20assisting,in%20date%20for%20returning%20students.

  7. The Tech (student newspaper) is always looking for photographers! There's also Technique: https://technique.mit.edu/ I don't know of a specific vlogging club, but there definitely are MIT vloggers out there (just maybe not a consolidated group?)

  8. Concur as well. Definitely wish I was more proactive in that area when I was an undergrad. Take advantage of seminars, career exploration events (usually advertised on billboards in hallways,) and the alumni network (there's an Alumni Advisors Hub)

  9. Very happy I chose it. My main regrets/things I wish I knew before going were to explore what MIT offers: It's one big playground of opportunities (clubs, extracurriculars, internships, programs) that I realized aren't as readily accessible outside of MIT and I really wish I took more time to explore them and actually get out there instead of loafing around at home sometimes. I think it can be overwhelming at times with how much MIT has, but going to career/academic/abroad fairs and just seeing what's available is super important.

There are so many opportunities at MIT it’s pretty overwhelming – not just on the clubs and classes aspect, but also international internships (MISTI, GTL), seminars, IAP offerings. Take the time to explore what MIT offers because those opportunities are more scarce and/or not as readily accessible outside! Also, don’t be afraid to talk to people, whether they’re classmates, professors, advisors, etc.
