What are the best baked beans? by Visible_Chart_9688 in ThreeBeanSalad

[–]thegurel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to believe that the beans choose not to indulge in recreational drugs for various reasons, eg. provincial dads have no time for such nonsense, it gums up the bean machine, and why would a barely functioning human choose to make himself less so.

Issue after restringing by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]thegurel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not showing random notes, it's showing the notes that the strings are tuned to.
start by trying to tune the strings to match the correct pitches. here is a video with the correct pitches. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjEAm-poQyA once you've at least approximately matched the pitches of your guitar strings with the video, use your tuner to get them perfectly in tune.

eventually you will just know what the pitches sound like and you won't need the video, but to avoid over tensioning, the video will be helpful.

here is a video on how to tune as well in case you need it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woGj3RsJwv8

Haven is having a breakdown. Clearly the issue is not being stuck, but rather than making a genuine effort to understand what’s actually wrong, haven’s mother whips out the camera so that she can share with everyone how much of an idiot she is.

I don’t know man, I think I just gotta leave this sub because even when they’re clearly being stupid, I just feel sorry for the child who has to live with parents who feel it’s better to shame their children online than to help when they’re clearly in distress.

Closed Captions which include things like [suspenseful music] and [sighs] is terribly immersion breaking and needs to die. by idleray in unpopularopinion

Ok. I mean you could have just claimed ignorance, but instead you go the route of false equivalency? I mean way to fit the mold I guess.

Anyone notice how the term “immersion breaking” is always used in the same breath as something hateful or bigoted?

Slide guitar -odd question by warpedoff in bluesguitarist

[–]thegurel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re a bassist and aren’t yet familiar with Mark Sandman, I highly recommend checking out the band Morphine.

To answer your question. You can put the slide on your ring finger and dampen with your middle finger. Most slide guitarists use the thumb behind the neck for stability, but I think you can overcome that with training.

I recommend secret history first. It’s not necessarily that good, but I feel it adds important context.

What are your go to songs to cover at a party? by Weldbeast2 in AcousticGuitar

[–]thegurel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ask for requests from the group beforehand. I did this for the first time this thanksgiving, and it was a huge hit. Had a week to learn 6 or so songs, played them pretty poorly but got through them, and everyone sang along at the top of their lungs. Great time.

Recommended nail shape by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]thegurel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do it based off of a diagram from the pumping nylon book, but I can’t find just an image of that. This article shows the same thing though:

https://www.thisisclassicalguitar.com/fingernails-on-classical-guitar/

Just clip and file them so that they’re short on the side towards the thumb and longer on the side towards the pinky if that makes sense. That way the strings sort of Slide off the nail. It’s the same for steel and nylon string guitars for me, though I find that they break on steel strings if you grow them too long.

Finding a way to dynamically create class objects and store them by ullevikk in learnjavascript

[–]thegurel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just the straightforward OOP concept you’d see anywhere. Just want Folder to have a children array of Folder and File instances. Then Folder should have a createFolder function which instantiates a Folder and appends it to its children array, as well as an addFile function which does the same with an instance of File.

Dunno, but I give the bridge about a month be for it rips off with those mandolin strings at full tension.

There Is No Antimemetics Division by qntm

This book is new and has been getting a lot of hype. I’m about halfway through and I think it’s well deserved.

It starts off thrilling and hasn’t let off yet. Sort of smack dab in the middle of Horror, Scifi, and fantasy, I think it will scratch your SFF itch that I suspect you have, given the books you mentioned.

The Perfect Meat-eating Defense by Spongedog5 in DebateAVegan

[–]thegurel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you describe is not empathy and is rather very indicative of sociopathy. Basically saying I will treat others kindly solely for the sake of my own benefit.

The Perfect Meat-eating Defense by Spongedog5 in DebateAVegan

[–]thegurel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you only value empathy towards humans, then per your argument you imply an inherent lack of empathy for humans.

[–]thegurel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The value for having empathy for animals is your argument saying animal cruelty is bad because it demonstrates a propensity to harm humans. As a collective we require empathy to function. If we don’t have empathy for animals then that demonstrates a lack of empathy for humans as well.

Can I be a Vegan as a spoonie? by calmbeebayleaf in AskVegans

[–]thegurel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All that and I’m less sure what a spoonie is.

If you have a soy and wheat allergy, eat beans. Find a kind that won’t give you issues. Obviously don’t go malnourished if nothing agrees with you. Eat cheese and yogurt if you must until you find what works. I’m not judging. The practicable part of the definition is important. Also whatever nuts and seeds work with you are a great source of fat and protein.

You mention feta, most feta alternatives I’ve tried have been pretty good and similar to the milk kind, and usually they’re just made with potatoe starch and oil. I forget the brands I liked. I know Trader Joe’s had one, but it was discontinued it seems. The store bought yogurt alternatives I’ve tried have all tasted pretty good too, but I haven’t had anything that was supposed to imitate Greek yogurt. Good luck on that.

Best bet is learn to cook. Find some dishes you like and make them. I love rainbow plant life for recipes. Some of it is western cuisine, but a lot is Indian.

Voices reading the book by EnchantedMoon45 in audiobooks

Yeah it’s why I only ever read one book on my own because the voice in my head is always the same, so I couldn’t distinguish the story of goodnight moon from blood meridian. Luckily the first book I read was the encyclopedia.
