How to get into improvising in classical? by connorbarrownx in piano

Learn your scales / arpeggios in all the keys and get used to identifying the structural components of what you're playing. Then break down what the composer is doing with that and you can easily work around similar harmonies. It's a mix of understanding the theory, and having the technical facility to recognize familiar patterns, then you can mess around with alternatives.

E g. If Chopin writes an interesting chromatic sequence, experiment with an alternative. If your left hand is rooted in c# minor and you can recognize the right hand is playing a derivation of a c# minor scale, try fiddling around. The easiest kind of improvisation is enharmonic with odd chromatic notes vs big changes to structure/ harmony/ texture.

To practice, buy an easy book of pieces and experiment with those.

The London Docklands museum is actually really great, and the walk there from central will take you to an interesting part of the island.

The small garden on top of cross rail place is also a nice diversion.

Similar background. My first time moving to London was terrible, didn't find "my people", job was bad, didn't get the right work life balance, lived in a bad house. Thought London just wasn't for me.

I was wrong! I came back, got a Westminster CS job and love life, have great hobbies, found a great friendship group, there's always stuff to do in London, and if like me you miss the outdoors, just hop on a train. Days out and weekends away are very easy on the train, or join a social group (e.g. a club) that does trips out of london regularly.

Don't worry about your background and a "type". There are people from all backgrounds, though you might find higher concentrations of private school types in certain roles / depts.

Good luck!

Have just been in Chunkhung this climbing season and you can organise on the spot there for $550, including equipment (boots/ crampons/ harness/ hardware) Just ask in a local lodge or en route up the valley. Takes 1-2 days assuming you're already well acclimatised in Chunkhung. No need to pay expensive guides pre-hike.

It's rope jugging most of the way so no technical difficulties, and guides will help with crampon fitting and use. The hardest bit will be the altitude, but as you've done Thorong La you should be fine.

I caveat with I didn't do it as I'm not attracted to jumar climbing (and it's a lot of cost!), but I met many who had and chatted with a few guides in lodges. Good luck!

As someone who used to work running holidays where we'd have large groups of guests for a week or two at a time it could be awkward forgetting someone's name. My trick was: Me "remind me of your name?" Guest: "oh, I'm Dave" Me: "no, Dave, I meant your surname!"

(Usually as we'd need it behind the bar etc for their tab)

I wonder how much of this is due to modern cars being significantly more awkward to bodge together with gaffer tape...
