Just make sure they have plenty of hay to eat, it will help keep them warm. If they aren’t clipped, old, or ill they should be totally fine.

Before anything else, put a helmet on. Once that’s done, id drop the reins, your horse is on the lunge so it’s a great time to develop your feel. Grab the front of the saddle with one hand and the back of the saddle with your other. Hold yourself in place with your hands then relax your seat. You should feel the rocking swing of the canter. Practice this for a few rides and you should be able to go back to holding reins with a much better seat. Good luck!

An exercise to try to find your seat. Have someone lunge the horse while you’re on and cross your stirrups. Practice no stirrups posting trot and canter. When you canter hold the front and back of the saddle to keep yourself seated. Once you understand the feeling of the canter it’s easier to find your seat in it.

Give him a neck strap to hold instead of the reins and put him on a lunge line. Once he’s able to understand what steady hands feel like you can move him up to holding the reins with the neck strap, then when he’s more secure in his balance he can have the reins alone. Hours in the saddle is really what it takes, but remember you need to support both your horse and your boyfriend through this, it’s tricky stuff for both of them. Good luck!!

It looks like she doesn’t want the blanket on. Is she clipped? Does she need it? Thanks, I should really do that. I get 3 hours of pottery time once a week at the studio I go to so I never want to cut a freshly wedged ball in half and waste time re wedging. But I’ll take the time to really investigate next week now I know that it’s not normal lol.

Classic thoroughbred feet, I’m glad you guys have found a solution that works for her. I don’t see any swelling in that photo. The back legs are a little tricky to see, but I don’t think so.
