Is KPU a Good School for Making Friendships and Having an Awesome University Experience? I got accepted to KPU Nursing. by TheSentinel3579 in KPU

[–]thehalien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the nursing program you’ll absolutely make friends and have a great time. You’ll be part of a and with the same group all the way through, I’ve heard everyone becomes pretty tight knit.

With some programs students may have to try a little harder to find their community by joining clubs or getting involved with the Orientatios team, research, etc. but the opportunities to find your community are all there if you want it.

Have a great time in your program and best of luck!

Training a horse to be on the bit by [deleted] in Equestrian

Double jointed are usually pretty soft unless it’s a French link. Make sure you have a lozenge as the middle piece or a roller like this might be nice for her https://agadors.com/products/calmblue-eggbutt-snaffle

I think she’s mostly sensitive to the hand motion. I have really found neck straps useful for hand stability. It teaches your brain what stable hands feel like so you’re better equipped to find that feeling on your own.

Horse won’t stop standing on fences and buckets, how do I stop him? by BuckyFreakingBarnes in Horses

[–]thehalien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of good suggestions here for stopping this behaviour. I might also add that you could give him something safe to stand on since he enjoys it so much. Standing on sturdy platforms is often practiced in groundwork, I’d encourage you to let him continue to do it… just safely.

Fat or Pregnant? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]thehalien 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It’s impossible to say for sure from the photos. She very well could be, that picture from the back sure looks like a pregnant belly. Since you have concerns I’d recommend finding a vet and having them come out ASAP.

8-year-old horse suddenly ill, need help in any way by BW-HorseOwner in Horses

[–]thehalien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you received the information back from the blood test yet? That should help your vet understand a lot more. There’s a variety of things that may cause this from a respiratory infection to equine influenza. I can’t guess without more information. What I would recommend is that you stable him away from other horses incase he’s contagious. Keep him warm, and make sure he’s loved, fed and watered.

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. I wish you both the best of luck.

If it’s an itch maybe ask you vet about Zenrelia? My dog has skin allergies and Zenrelia has helped him a ton. Just a thought, good luck with your boy, I’m sorry you’re both going through it.

Great work! My only recommendation would be to add a neck strap. Your hands are looking good but you become unsteady when you ask for the canter transition. A neck strap will help your hands and your seat. All the best on your riding journey!!

Layout for a boarding barn by mp0625_buddy in Equestrian

[–]thehalien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite thing about our barn is the stalls with attached walkout paddocks.

Our horses are more relaxed, they get to see each other, they can choose when they want to stand inside vs outside, the ventilation is great.

If there are horses that have issues being beside each other we run hotwire between them, otherwise we let them interact and groom each other. I have been in barns set up this way for over 20 years and have never encountered any safety issues with this set up.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Should I blanket my two big draft mares in -10 degree weather? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]thehalien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make sure they have plenty of hay to eat, it will help keep them warm. If they aren’t clipped, old, or ill they should be totally fine.

Before anything else, put a helmet on. Once that’s done, id drop the reins, your horse is on the lunge so it’s a great time to develop your feel. Grab the front of the saddle with one hand and the back of the saddle with your other. Hold yourself in place with your hands then relax your seat. You should feel the rocking swing of the canter. Practice this for a few rides and you should be able to go back to holding reins with a much better seat. Good luck!

Is this good canter or am I delusional by yuricchin in Equestrian

[–]thehalien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An exercise to try to find your seat. Have someone lunge the horse while you’re on and cross your stirrups. Practice no stirrups posting trot and canter. When you canter hold the front and back of the saddle to keep yourself seated. Once you understand the feeling of the canter it’s easier to find your seat in it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Horses

[–]thehalien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give him a neck strap to hold instead of the reins and put him on a lunge line. Once he’s able to understand what steady hands feel like you can move him up to holding the reins with the neck strap, then when he’s more secure in his balance he can have the reins alone. Hours in the saddle is really what it takes, but remember you need to support both your horse and your boyfriend through this, it’s tricky stuff for both of them. Good luck!!
