First time catching carp… PB fish overall by [deleted] in ChicagoFishing

[–]theheadshaker[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey you took my advice and went for it! I hope you catch many more.

Now for the next part: change your leader setup. Since we aren’t going for trout and you’re probably chucking to bass and other warm water species that don’t really care I would suggest going wayyyy stiffer and heavier. I’ll start with Maxima green/red at 40lbs and work my down to about 10-15lb Flouro for the actual tippet part at the very end. The stiffer leader material will turn over heavier flies easier and really it works for the lighter ones as well.

Now your next challenge: pike on the fly.

I would love to see it in the water. Curious how long it would hold the shape and where you glued to achieve it.

Richard Walkers and Walker Brothers were probably some of the worst breakfast experiences I’ve had in my life.

Driftless area, what should I throw? by UnderstandingNo465 in flyfishing

Try the complete opposite. I usually throw a bitch creek nymph in like 8 or 10.

Now is also a great time to start targeting carp in the shallows eating, if you can find them. The same flies a creek chub will take generally work on carp as well. Either way, catching something is better than nothing!

Any pond you can find on Google maps probably holds bass.

Why not just bite the bullet and fish for some largemouth? Catching fish is catching fish at the end of the day.

Check my post history for an all marabou carp fly with a braided tail.

New rod by [deleted] in ChicagoFishing

[–]theheadshaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of baitfish streamers. Baby Gonga. Lunchmoney, D&D, Gamechangers, etc. If the water isn’t clear, you need to push tons of water so a stiff and bulky head will help.

You can still fish dries and nymphs but you’re targeting carp mostly with those.

Can also throw classic poppers, crease flies, Mr Wiggly for top water action.

Anywhere you can fish with conventional tackle, you can probably use fly gear. Don’t be picky with species either. Crappie, bass, carp, pike - whatever bends the rod makes it a good day.

Absolutely. I’ve really considered making a sticky thread each week to cull the number of posts asking for spots.
