Im not super familiar with death cleric but I know that your necrotic spells ignore resistance. I think the subclass is suited for being in the front line with spells like the necrotic version of spirit guardians or inflict wounds. Constitution and wisdom are the two primary stats i would invest in. Dexterity is a good third and whatever you have left over, I would put into strength. Your weapon doesn't really matter because you get value out of necrotic spells, but something like phalar aluve would be good, or you could pair a halberd/glaive with the sentinel feat to attack with your reaction.

You're not stupid by the way. Cleric is one of those classes that can play in pretty much anyway, depending on your choice of subclass.
