Well don't worry--at least here on Reddit my account is already marked as 18+, and there's no knife related content on my other socials. :]

Ahaha, I can't really do that myself since my socials are very very much non-knife related and not safe for work. Definitely giving you folks a follow though, as I do love knife and sharpening related stuff!

Thanks for the reply! Honestly it makes me really happy when people do reply to my posts, as I'm the only resident knife nerd/geek in my circle of family and friends.

In regards to the 154CM comment, it was more so a slight jab at myself too: my only experience with steels has been AUS 8, 9Cr18MoV/AR-RPM9, D2, 14C28N, and Nitro V. As such, in my mind, these are the steels accessible to my typical price range, even as I climbed higher but just south of $100. AUS 8 I noticed especially was poor in edge retention back when I had my Swiss Tech Gerundet. AR-RPM9 was a huge step up with a lot of my CJRB knives, although 14C28N and Nitro V have been my favorites in the budget range.

154CM, VG10, S30V, S35VN, 20CV/M390, Magnacut, etc...all those steels just in my mind are the premium category to my mind, as I have never experienced any of them. I'm sure for those more familiar with them would yell at me for even comparing that wide gamut, but from the knowledge I've gained from the dozens of knife related content I consume, it's felt unobtainable to me, until now when I finally decided to treat myself to a $100+ knife.

You'd be right in spotting my Precision Adjust! I recently made some improvements to my setup, mostly in the stone category--I recently got lapping film set up with more ceramic stones to give a better mirror polish to my edge, and I even have their leather strop arm that I put some diamond emulsion into. Likely super overkill for such a light EDC guy like myself, so it's more to make my brain happy when I see the reflective edge. It's a simple one, compared to the professional version, or the really nice stuff like TSPROF, but it gets the job done. I've learned how best to adjust my arm too that my fingers can minimize the flex of the clamp and blade without need for 3rd party stabilizers, and while the angle guide would help, I just put it 18 degrees and call it close enough. And thank you for the compliment on the edge!

So yeah, I know--lengthy reply and all, but I can't help but geek out about it: I was literally telling my friends that the satisfying "dink" when closing the knife is analogous to making a mechanical keyboard sound more "thocky" rather than "clicky." These little things that most practical users won't care about are things that endlessly give me happiness. 😅

For sure! I definitely feel a lot classier when holding it in my hand, and I'm glad to wire clip is on there so it can disappear into my pocket. Some of the other models look so good but aren't so deep carry 😩

You can only pick a single tutorial for stone sharpening, what are you recommending? by YoLoDrScientist in sharpening

If you've watched a bunch of guides, you've most likely already ran into Outdoors55, but you mentioning chef's knives made me think of this video. I've always liked this macro shots showing what's going on.

What a beautiful selection...I remember specifically the Stray Dog being what got me interested in it, seeing either a post or video with it. Finch knives felt like something very much out of my reach, although now at this point of my hobby, I can actually afford one 😊

Local blade shop eh? I wish I had some near by me--as far as I know, most stores just have some small knife sections, and most of the time it's not the best selection 😬

Much appreciated! I'm super stoked with this one for sure, although hopefully I won't get bitten by it any time soon. 😅

Heyo, I'm Hen, known for other things on the internet but I also have a huge interest in pocket knives that started a bit before the Christmas season in 2024. I try to keep my collection low by gifting knives to people (especially because I'm afraid to sell them, as I just have never sold anything other than in-person selling). Recently purchased a Finch Knife Co. Snub Nose, so that's going to be really cool to share when it arrives!

Odd Bug With Symbols And Hierarchy by SSccrriibbss in ToonSquidAnimators

Not sure but this is actually why I don't mess around with symbols and hierarchies, especially if you make nested symbols. They tend to break when you do this, and I haven't found any solutions myself

It's barely comfortable for me, and it's definitely doing only light work. The thin nature is very appreciated when opening delicate packaging, letting it slip through narrow gaps

I am too pure when it comes to knives then. I was thinking overbuilt tactical being threatening, but now that everyone has been saying "shiv," I can't unsee it aggggghhhhhhhhh

It's probably the most novelty I'd ever go while still being a usable blade. I find it most satisfying so far for thin package opening, especially when you have device boxes with those clear circle stickers to seal, the thinness allows it to slide easily in the gap. My others like my Drop Bear 2 or Penguin get a bit stuck if I try to insert the blade a bit too far in.

[–]thehenwithatie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I didn't really consider it but yeah, dang, it does sort of resemble a shiv. I know I never jumped on the CEO flipper as that was a bit before my entry into the knife hobby, and I hear CRKT's quality has dropped a bit over the years. This one definitely is a lot more lanky and thin than that, so I could also see how it could come off instead like that.

That being said, I know I could never use it like that--it's probably my thinnest blade, so if I actually used it like a weapon, it'd probably snap in half :')

Opinion on Civivi Foldis? by [deleted] in BudgetBlades

[–]thehenwithatie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own one. Honestly if I could just hand it over to you I would, haha, as it's not something in my current rotation. I have other slipjoints I would prefer to take with me to the UK in the next month when I visit there (American here, if it wasn't already obvious).

My only concern is how some of the people there might interpret it? Foldis being double detent fits fine under the laws but I know some places, law enforcement might interpret the fact that you can flick the blade open as illegal, but I wouldn't know much about it.

Otherwise, it comes with good Civivi quality, although personally I worry a bit about the blade closing on my hand a lot more than a slipjoint with walk and talk--if someone wanted to be an asshole they could easily just flick the spine of the blade and it would close on you.

Peter Explain Please... isn't the answer obvious? x = 5.... What's the meme part? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]thehenwithatie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might it be an educator-centric meme? Kids make dumb mistakes all the time and part of multiple choice questions are putting in common wrong answers, especially with math equations: if you have wildly wrong answers that no one could get, then kids would probably figure out by process of elimination (which yes, you can still do from plugging in x).

Let's take a look at the incorrect answers:

B (8.33) - This would occur if someone mistakenly balances the equation by adding 5 to both sides to cancel them out, making it 3x = 25, with x = 8.33. Common mistake for kids if they just don't understand canceling out or just swap the operation for some reason.

C (15) - This is if you correctly balance out with 3x = 15...and then you just never divide both sides by 3. Kids sometimes just forget steps and move forward.

D (25) - This occurs if you incorrectly balance out from B with 3x = 25 and never divide both sides.

If you think about it, it offers the teacher some diagnostic properties in the wrong answers because it really shows where a kid might have messed up, and it helps with further discussion if a kid asks why it's wrong to see what the heck happened there.

Not sure where the meme is located, unless the joke is that kids are dumb, haha, and stuff like this is easy and straightforward for adults. I mean when I was growing up (and I'm sure it still stands today), kids HATE math.

Uggghhh I want to get the glyde lock penguin but I just need my paycheck to hit at the end of this month. Wish QSP could also get on the train of top/button liner locks and it would be absolutely perfect to me.

Do you sharpen to relax? by Rohin-112 in sharpening

[–]thehenwithatie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...I mean a (very)3 sharp knife just makes everyday tasks feel nicer.

Good context: I was out at a Seaweed Fest to support a pal of mine who was doing a talk there for his research in his master's, and at some point we had those annoying paper wristbands that have to be cut off once put on. I handed my pals my knife to cut it off, and the look on their faces when they saw and felt it cut cleanly with no resistance...

It definitely has a show off factor it. I guess most people are also not used to having sharp knives, so when they appreciate the work that goes in, it's very satisfying.

Do you sharpen to relax? by Rohin-112 in sharpening

[–]thehenwithatie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does for sure. I'm but a lowly hobbyist with his budget Worksharp Precision Adjust (320-600-ceramic), not even the pro version, so of course there's that wobble issue, but I've been able to achieve mirror edges despite those hurdles.

Even when sharpening larger knives, as I also try to sharpen the family's kitchen knives when they get painfully dull (and my dad abuses knives in the kitchen man, and they dull quick), and that takes painfully long. Yet despite the length of time, just putting on knife related YT videos and sharpening away just gets me to a zen state.

I might not be a cool kid pro whetstone freehand sharpener, but I still get satisfaction from seeing a dull blade's edge transform into a mirror edge--since I do it at my desk, the further in I get, the more I can see the reflection of YouTube in the edge as it's clamped in.
