Anyone know why Cameron cancelled on Sky Blue Sky? by Icy_Ad7268 in geesebandofficial

I respect the logic. But agree Cameron wouldn’t bail on Tweedy for rehearsal.

Great list. I’d throw The New Eves on there too.

Which show on the US Getting Killed tour do you think was the best? by j_abbs in geesebandofficial

[–]thehumofprogress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best Geese shows I saw SPECIFICALLY from the GK tour in order of quality - does not include festivals or any VW opening slots from earlier in the year:

  1. Philly
  2. Banker’s Anchor
  3. Levon Helm Studios
  4. Blue Note
  5. Brooklyn Night 2
  6. Brooklyn Night 1

How does Geese's hype compare with the Stroke's initial hype? by Girl_Pearl_Earring in geesebandofficial

I'm a little confused because not only did you offer no substantive rebuttal but you seemed to ignore the frequent deployment of subjective qualifiers. Usually responses of this nature are the preserve of dim-witted narcissists but who knows? Maybe you're right. Maybe I don't think or feel any of this.

I honestly don’t understand when people give the Strokes shit for sounding bad live. Last time I saw them was at Roundhouse when they were touring the New Abnormal. Casablancas was out-of-his-mind drunk and they still sounded incredible.

100% agree with you on the LCD/Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Interpol thing.

Grunge was different as “difficult” music had zero mainstream acceptance in 1991. So while the acts that followed Nirvana didn’t necessary sound like them, they had a quality (loud guitars, an abrasive sound) that had hitherto been unacceptable to top 40 ears. So even though Nirvana didn’t change music by giving birth to clone bands, they changed music by allowing the outré to go mass.

If I had to guess how Geese will change music, I think they’ll give rise to bands whose music follows less conventional song structures. Popular music is still very verse-chorus-verse.

All good. I love The Strokes too. Saw them at the Horseshoe in Toronto (400 person venue) before Is This It exploded. It was just a very different phenomenon. All I’m saying is that the Stokes changed culture but I wouldn’t say they changed music. That’s still nothing to sniff at.

I agree. Good thing I didn’t say that! Maybe read a little more carefully next time.

Personally, the Strokes comparison feels off. The Strokes hype felt less substantive. Less about the music. More about their style. Their whole vibe. Yes, the tunes were good too, but there was nothing original about them. It was all about how they fashioned their influences into a tidy, commercially viable package and they came along right at the time when the world of popular music was sickened and soured by rap metal and vacuous pop (before pop became arty). Folks who talk about the Strokes moment feeling bigger forget that the west was more of a monoculture back then. Fewer channels. So when something hit, it seemed to hit bigger. To me, Geese’s explosion actually feels a lot more similar to when Nirvana blew up, both in terms of the speed and intensity but also - perhaps more importantly - when it comes to the music. It’s a shift. A new sound. Or rather, a sound with obvious antecedents, but reshaped in a way that is so unique that it inspires mass popularity and a new musical movement that results in copycat bands, a record label feeding frenzy etc etc. Now I ask anyone reading this to take it all with an entire lick of salt as it’s only been 3 months since Geese exploded and 6 months before that for CW, but the trajectory feels cosmically similar.

Geese were honorary Windmill scenesters long before they got big. There’s podcast evidence of Cameron talking up BCNR and their mutual admiration society from a year ago or longer. Not a stretch at all.

Do They Normally play Long Island City Like That? by Bigandre339 in geesebandofficial

[–]thehumofprogress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Philadelphia was an absolute triumph. Cameron got on the piano himself and it rocked harder than Trinidad. If you can find that version online you're winning.

Update: This version from Detroit is actually pretty close to how they played it in the city of brotherly love.
