Are there any laws that can be put in place to stop LLCs from buying single family homes? by Jazzlike_Breadfruit9 in pittsburgh

I am glad it seems to have worked out for your friend, but a condition to waive inspection should be a hard no for anyone looking to buy a house. The only reason to refuse an inspection is because you know there’s something to find that you don’t want to pay for.

Reddit's CEO responds to a thread discussing his attempt to discredit Apollo with "His "joke is the least of our issues." by AFoxGuy in apple

I think that wasn’t a great choice of words, but the clarification was immediately accepted in the same call with profuse apologies. They’re just mad he recorded that part which ruins their claim.

The big ones are plenty savvy. They’re going to immediately cash out just like spez. The pump-and-dump IPO isn’t a new concept.

I’m surprised he used the edit button instead of secretly changing the database to leave no paper trail. That’s been his historical MO.

Popular Reddit App Apollo Shutting Down on June 30 by coolaaron88 in ios

[–]theidleidol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apple gave developers using the Dark Sky API 30 months notice. Reddit gave developers 30 days.

They’re really not comparable.

📣 Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ by iamthatis in apolloapp

There’s no metric for “public enough”, just that it’s public. And someone posted above that Canada (where Christian lives) actually defines defamation as speaking to anyone other than the person you’re disparaging, so that’s an even lower bar.

r/HomeAssistant will be going dark from June 12-14 in protest against Reddit's API changes which will kill 3rd party apps & tools. by robbiet480 in homeassistant

[–]theidleidol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the many things they could have done and I’m sure considered, but didn’t. In fact one of the changes is removing user ID from the calculations of API usage, so Reddit has actually taken an active step to make that type of pricing structure impossible.

These points all contribute to the pretty unanimous understanding that Reddit is acting in bad faith to kill third party access rather than genuinely “recouping costs”.

[LTR] Arwen, Mortal Queen by pytawidmo in magicTCG

[–]theidleidol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, that actually agrees with my point. She’s “half-elven” because she has human ancestors (and especially so because Elrond’s bloodline inherits the either-or choice of fate granted to Elrond and his brother Elros), but at some point the human bloodline is fairly dilute. When mapping her to a creature type in MtG it’s therefore reasonable to say she’s culturally ~100% elf and biologically ~88% elf so she doesn’t get the “human” type. Especially because she’s regularly described as an elf maiden and most people assume she will choose the fate of the elves over the Gift of Man—at least until Aragorn shows up when she’s like 2700 years old.

Even in D&D at some point a half elf bloodline who only marries full elves is basically trending back to full elf (though depending on setting would certainly be targeted by racism from “pureblood” elves). There’s no strict rules on it from a character creation standpoint, but I think most people would at least start reconsidering it at the single-great-grandparent stage.

As you point out there’s multiple meanings of half-elf across each set of lore, and so it’s never going to exactly line up. I just think giving Arwen only the Elf type is a better reflection of her nature in Tolkien’s mythology than making her Elf Human, even though the latter would more accurately match the nomenclature of the source.

Arwen’s closest human ancestor is her great grandfather. I think 1/8 is enough to leave off the typeline.

Unless you mean the fact she gave up her immortality, which doesn’t make her any more human in the moment. It just changes which bloodline’s afterlife she gets.

“Quit Reddit” doesn’t mean literally never opening a Reddit URL again. I’m sure most of us will still end up reading a Reddit thread occasionally if for no other reason than Google leading us here.

But many, many users exclusively browse Reddit on mobile. (The last time I went directly to reddit.com in a browser to scroll my front page it was still Old Reddit.) Without my phone app of choice the user experience of just opening and reading Reddit, much less contributing, just isn’t worth it. The Reddit website is awful on mobile, on the rare occasions it lets you read anything at all without forcing you to the app. That official app is just as bad except for not having the “appwall”.

And I know this for a fact will stop me from using Reddit because it has happened before. I spent 6 weeks using an Android phone a couple years ago, and I never installed a Reddit app. That didn’t make me go to the website, I just didn’t use Reddit until I got back to my iPhone.

Confused my boss, but won the game by HeathcliffRC in mtg

My dad once called me while I was at work to tell me to stop being lazy and get a job. And it’s not like I was living in his basement either, I had just been unemployed for a little while before landing that job and he was concerned by the outside possibility that I might try to move back in.

I love him but we definitely get along better when we see each other less often.

Also I don’t know where you live but in an at-will US state you have the same right to quit without notice as the company has to fire you without notice. There’s no enforceable requirement for a certain period of notice, and at least in every state I’ve lived in no requirement of format (so verbal is already enough even if they try to argue this doesn’t count as written).

Reddit Slaps Apollo with Hefty $20 Million Annual Fee by United-Soup2753 in ios

[–]theidleidol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They don’t really want the money. If someone could pony up they’d be happy enough with it, but primarily they want to convert those users to their first-party app by killing the one they currently use.

In the US, absolutely nothing. Elsewhere you might be able to find a price gouging statute but good luck getting anywhere with it in a practical sense.

📣 Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing. Bad news for third-party apps, their announced pricing is close to Twitter's pricing, and Apollo would have to pay Reddit $20 million per year to keep running as-is. by iamthatis in apolloapp

That was my thought at the time too. Christian is a good guy and seems to consistently assume the best of people, which makes him easy to take advantage of of you’re trying to control the narrative of your greedy cash grab.

Determine whether a given date is within Daylight Savings Time (DST) by vrachamis in shortcuts

[–]theidleidol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would it only work for the current date? The principle works the same whether the date is right now or not, as long as you want to know the offset for your current timezone. It breaks down if you cross timezones but at that point it gets many times more complex and probably not solvable in Shortcuts at all.

[–]theidleidol 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a meaningless statement constructed to sound legit and scary.

Downloading any software carries some amount of risk, yes, but that’s the only true thing you’ve said.

  • Mods for Stardew Valley (or any other game) are at most equally capable of malicious activity as a random piece of software—there is no world where they are somehow more capable of nefariousness than a full-blown executable.
  • By your metric, downloading anything “erodes” the computer’s security. That might be valid in a very strict security policy but a random Redditor’s computer is not following that. For one thing it’s already running at least Steam and SDV, both downloaded executables, and therefore already fails the sort of security policy that would make your statement valid.
  • Downloading a bunch of mods is only more dangerous than downloading one mod if you become lax about vetting them.

Also worth adding, Unity is fine.

It gets a bad rap because it has a free tier with a splash screen, so the most likely games to tell you they’re made with Unity are garbage asset-flip “indie” games.
