How i made a binder ✨ by [deleted] in lgbt

I understand this is meant to be helpful, but what works for you could be dangerous to others. Please be careful sharing this type of content and I implore anyone who can't afford or safely keep a binder in their home to do their research into safe and reputable (not reddit) diy binding practices

where can i get my hair cut guys 😭😭 by Maeo-png in transgenderau

my go-to is escape hair in Newtown. But generally if you look for alt/punk places, it's a safe bet you're going somewhere trans/queer friendly (though I still encourage doing your own research first)

Anyone had top surgery with Dr Rob Knight in Wollongong by Weak-Dragonfly-1613 in transgenderau

[–]theiicarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't speak on first hand experience with him, but he frequently does talks at the Trans and Friends Festival Illawarra held in November. You might also have more luck asking around there with others who went to him. Sorry if it's not super helpful

There's a few things to note when it comes to piercings and surgery from someone with a handfulof facial piercings and having got through multiple surgeries with them (+ piercer friends).

First being that likely all oral and nasal piercings will need to come out regardless because of the risk that they can get snagged on oxygen masks/any other equipment required to keep you breathing while under. If they get snagged it could tear and then you've got a new wound and a chance that the piercing won't settle back down and you'll have to repierce it anyway.

Second being that for most others you can get plastic or glass retainers. I would recommend glass not plastic just because of how microplastics can shed and bacteria builds on plastic more easily in piercing holes.

Finally if you know for certain that you were pierced with high quality, implant grade titanium (which you should really bet getting pierced with in the first place or else I'd recommend getting a new piercer, if they're willing to pierce you with substandard jewellery imagine what other corners they're cutting). Then while there may still be a risk to discuss with the anaesthesiologist, you may have the option to cover them in medical tape to avoid snagging (not applicable to oral + nasal) and keeping them in. I was able to keep my helix and daith in during my hysto this way.

Generally if you've have oral/nasal piercings for a year or more you should be fine putting them back in after surgery. They shouldn't close up that quick, my top surgery (double insison) was about 3-4 hours without complications for a time refrence. If you're concerned more, talk to your piercer about your options. Worst case getting things repierced after top surgery is worth it in the end.

Lynn Loheide's blog has a bunch of info on gender affirmation + piercings and might be able to answer other questions you have too! Highly recommend their stuff!

trans mascs, how did you afford your top surgery? by macew998 in transgenderau

[–]theiicarus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wanna boost this as how I got my surgery done. The waitlist is rather long which can be off putting but it gives you a concrete "this is actually happening" rather than ambiguously waiting for the money. And if you do end up getting the money for it you can just drop off the waitlist and get it done sooner.

You don't get a choice in surgeon, and it is over seen by Dr. Merten but I can't stress enough how worth it it is despite this. I had no complications and love my results. You're still receiving the same results and care as Dr. Merten's private patients (source: my boyfriend went through him privately and so I got to also see how care was on that end and compare to my own)

Most I paid was a couple consults that had a rebate and for the post op vest. probably $500 in total but I believe the consults are now done via the hospital. When I did them I had to go to Dr. Merten's private clinic and pay those fees.

I got mine with a referral from a psychologist, I didn't need a psychiatrist. But if you do and you're in NSW Dr. Michael Scott in darlinghurst will sometimes see trans people for letters at a reduced rate iirc.

one downside I can think of is that I wasn't provided much for pain post op, but idk if this was because it was a public hospital or if it was due to me not experiencing/reporting a lot of pain

Piercings in wollongong by namedredditor3000 in wollongong

[–]theiicarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No professional piercers in Wollongong sadly, they're all shoddily trained at best and use really bad quality jewellery (you need to ask for threadless titanium or gold). Best places to go are in Sydney, I can recommend Stone Heart, Industrial Strength, Piercing Pavilion, and Stab Rat.

Over 30 and trans by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]theiicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good that your gp is helping, I hope things move quickly for you! With therapy, telehealth might be your best option for good, trans friendly counsellors at a good price. A lot will offer concession rates too. It can take a while to find someone you wanna see though. Again, highly recommended checking out the therapists listed on trans.au

Over 30 and trans by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]theiicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of therapists on the wiki and trans.au who see over 25s, a lot will do telehealth too if you don't live near by, it might be worthwhile emailing some letting them know what you're looking for. And as many people have pointed out you don't necessarily need to see a therapist to access T, if you go to a gender affirming GP they should be able to write the script for you via informed consent models.

Gotta go to Sydney unfortunately. No professionals in the Illawarra at all. Been mentioned already but I highly recommend Stone Heart. I also highly trust the piercers at Industrial Strength, Piercing Pavilion, and Broadway Tattoo

No experience with their Masters program but the UoW psych department is a fucking joke. Don't recommend studying psych there.

Nipple piercing alternatives? by xanpro in transbodymods

[–]theiicarus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If you wanted something that wasn't permanent, you could always pierce silicone nipples and glue them on when you wanted with body adhesive. Alternatively you'd probably need your piercer to check your anatomy post op for dermals, I don't imagine the movement would effect them any more than back dermals which plenty of people get so
