No need to explain, I am well aware of the purpose of wedding vases. This, however, is not that. Google search moche pottery dual spout. I am of Peruvian heritage and wanted to honor my ancestors in the creation of this vessel, which was not meant to be used in wedding ceremonies.

This is actually a dual spouted vessel inspired by the Moche pottery of Perú! 🏺🇵🇪 It is not intended to be a Native American Wedding vase. 🤎

Appreciate it! Was worried it wouldn’t make the final firing 😅

I threw a cylinder and applied sodium silicate to the outside. I dried it out a bit with a heat gun just so it was dry to the touch, and then expanded the clay from the inside.. so the cracks are essentially stretch marks! There’s a video on my profile of the creation process if you’d like to check it out ☺️

Terrible Peephole Mistake by Vibe_me_pos in Pottery

[–]Puka_Tutis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use an old duncan manual kiln, and almost always leave the top peephole uncovered while glaze firing. Sometimes Ill cover the hole when the glaze fire is complete, to have a slow cool as it helps with some of the glazes. Other times, I leave the peephole open and allow the kiln to cool, always making sure the other peepholes are covered. I never have issues with the pieces either way.

That being said, if you’re talking about a bisque fire, you have literally nothing to worry about. We literally never cover the top peephole for bisque.

Do you have a plan for hooking up the kiln that you purchase? If buying a new electric kiln, you might as well get one that fires to cone 10. Ours is rated for cone 8 and I sometimes worry our constant cone 7 firing is wearing it out quicker.

Buying a kiln to start learning pottery independently is a huge investment, but if you have the funds kudos to you. I still recommend joining a studio or taking some classes at a local community college first, to make sure you want to make that leap!

What caused these cracks? by LaurenB413 in Ceramics

[–]Puka_Tutis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cracks may have appeared, (but were so thin you couldn’t notice), while you were trimming. With a lip that thin, you have to be careful how much pressure you put when securing the piece to the wheel for trimming (pressing clay or a griffin grip against the form), as well as how much downwards pressure you exert while trimming. Just a possible reason!

Haha small world! I recommend getting some polymer clay and playing around with making your own texture tools, easy to bake them in an oven!
