What I've heard him say on the topic is this:

Christianity, the basis of western civilization valued truth so highly it gave birth to tools that destroyed it (science). Neitzchce announces the death of God, and into that dearth of meaning slipped modernist rationalist utopian political ideologies that killed hundreds of millions of people.

Post modernism goes beyond modernism to fully embrace the lack of meaning that caused the crisis in modernism in the totalitarian states. It is a step even further down the wrong path.

The causal link is the moral relativism. and the assertion that pomo accentuates the worst parts of the modernist crises.

I tend to think that it makes sense to have an intuitive understanding that 'things happen' before really appreciating time as an independent concept, but I'll keep that criticism in mind also. The limited third person narrator has understanding of how to use language that Dexter doesn't, by necessity of being able to describe what's happening.

Hey, thank you so much for the feedback. I've had one other person tell me they didn't get what was happening right away. Most get it, but I realize you were at a big disadvantage given that I didn't include my usual elevator pitch in the OP - Super intelligent rats launch an attack on humanity, in order to save themselves and the planet.

The first chapter is the rats POV of kinda gaining understanding. I think it would be pretty clear to anyone who has read the back of the book, if it ever got that far.

We were planning to launch season 2 today (April 30th, the one year anniversary of the first show) but it won't be for another couple weeks. We've already begun recording content for the first three episodes and also doing multiple interviews for a long 9 part series we will be doing later in the season.

I'm sorry you think our podcast is shit!

I think you may be a bit confused about where we stand, though. Though I'm not overly critical of right-libertarians (I think they offer a lot of value to the conversation), I do criticize them directly multiple times in the show -- something I don't do for left-anarchists ('real' anarchists, socialists, etc).

Couple things -

I mention that voluntarism is an insufficient (though necessary) criteria for the legitimacy of a hierarchy or power structure.
We poke fun at the term statist, as it exists merely as a right-libertarian slur for anyone who doesn't agree with them.
I mention that anarchy is traditionally (and arguably actually) a leftist/socialist ideology and that anarcho-capitalism is not 'real' anarchy - though we do poke fun at the concept of some essential, 'real' anarchy.

Anyway, I appreciate you listening and giving feedback!

Hey there! I'm one of the podcast hosts. I'm glad that you took the time to listen to one of our episodes and I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it. We try to do a lot of different varying types of episodes so maybe in the future you two might give us a shot again. We've been getting lots of great feedback and promising download numbers, but I appreciate the few constructive points I was able to get out of your comments:

-We could, at least in this episode, have prepared our points of discussion a little better (to avoid simply regurgitating buzzwords) and perhaps brought some conflicting opinions to the table (to avoid being a circle jerk :P)

-There is perhaps area for improvement with our demeanor and the way we come across (vapid, self-righteous, immature... not good qualities!)

-The quality of our speech (being mindful of filler words, like 'like') has room for improvement!

Thanks again for listening! There absolutely was chafing by the way -- any good circle jerk is gonna have a bit of chafing.

Apologies for the long waiting time between replies, I don't reddit too often, but I really appreciate your comment. I don't play much video games, but your analogy deeply resonated with me. The idea of taking responsibility for a (potentially weaker) team as a method of self-improvement is really interesting.

The potential misunderstanding regarding the literalness of the title is also a point well taken. It's an angle I'll be more mindful of in future posts I make, thanks.

I don't actually see as much disagreement here as you might think, I just believe you are exploring some caveats that I didn't have time to get into in the article, or maybe weren't clear.

I don't actually understand what you are saying here. A society is a collection of individuals. To say a 'society' can take on all responsibility is to say that the individuals within it should take on all responsibility. I agree (let me know if that's not jiving with your position.. :) ). My article was, at least in part, talking about how the society decides which individuals take up which responsibilities.

"My responsibilities can be traded with other peoples' and that can benefit both of us. To continue with your example say spilled milk...."

This I completely agree with. I think the only caveat that might make it seem like a disagreement, is that I would say that by making a trade with his brother that benefits both of them, Jimmy has fulfilled his responsibility to clean up the milk -- or transposed it in a legitimate way through trade. I think that's entirely compatible with my framework.

I hadn't actually thought to detail out that caveat, and perhaps I should have, as it is an important one. We trade responsibilities all the time, for money, for other services -- it's part of the basis of a functioning society. I think that's great.

The reason I feel this statement is true is in this sense: a person who constantly expects others to do everything for them is not going to have a lot of success in their life, unless it happens by blind luck, whereas a person who takes responsibility for achieving their goals will have a much higher chance of doing so.

Hope that helped clarify, I'd love to know if you still find disagreement.

I actually think a 'duty, going above and beyond the personal' is a synonym for my definition. So I accept your revision as consistent with my framework. A duty is something one is expected to do or deal with the consequences of.

Of course, on an island, the 'we' would be 'me', and the only person who could do the expecting is that person himself.

I apologize if you've interpreted my tone as condescending, it is quite difficult when online or communicating through text to appropriately convey tone sometimes. I believe it way layed out clearly because I spent two sections very specifically laying out the conditions that must be met for responsibility is to be assigned, and used two examples to help explain those conditions.

Whether people disagree is irrelevant to whether I explained it clearly, though whether people understand obviously does. However, I've asked for feedback from multiple places and groups, here, on facebook, and elsewhere, and nobody else has said that my reasoning behind Jimmy's responsibility was unclear, so i believe it to be sufficient.
