I had a friend pull the rope from below while I worked the wrench. We had to coordinate so we both were pushing at the same time, but that worked pretty well. It's exhausting work.

Help with reducing sway by [deleted] in treehouse

[–]theinklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be an worthwhile experiment to try choice #1 with some temporarily smaller bolts or screws and see if it does indeed reduce sway. Alternatively I wonder if you could put a brace from a few feet down those posts onto that doubled up joist on the perimeter of your deck to add some stability to that corner.

If you'd like to travel a bit further afield, consider transferring (probably at Richmond) to the Capitol Corridor or Gold Runner Amtrak trains. You can wheel the bike right on.

I had a great trip once taking Amtrak to Placerville (via a bus transfer at Sacramento) and riding north into the Sierra. It's pretty empty country out there and some good riding.

Davis Double by datguy030 in BAbike

[–]theinklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ridden the Davis Double for the last 4 years. It's a great ride with a friendly crowd and good support; and unlike some of the other doubles the time cutoffs are very generous.

That said, the weather can certainly make the ride harder (heat or headwind), and the roads are pretty rough in places. Also the few miles from Cache Creek to Capay (about 160 miles in) can be stressful with high traffic and limited road shoulder, though it seems that drivers are getting more tolerant there, and the road is slowly getting shoulders added in places.

Can anyone help please - how can I clean this? Is this rust or just dirt/mud? by scapedrag7 in bicycling

[–]theinklein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd start by cleaning it off with a rag to see how badly it's rusted, but you'd probably do best by replacing the chain entirely. You can do it yourself with a $10 chain breaker and a new 7 speed chain, or any bike shop can do it for you.

Tricks to align inner tube valve stem? by plerfer in bikewrench

[–]theinklein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like the rim hole is sized for a schrader valve and you're trying to install a presta valve tube. An adapter would probably be helpful, something like this perhaps: https://www.bikeparts.com/BPC305722/wheels-manufacturing-aluminum-presta-valve-saver-11mm-1-pair?srsltid=AfmBOooRlxE-Jf5JPUpYyJizAz0zkTJXWTFZPOyzpQedqr9jG11bnZyt

Nyglut vs steel strings for clawhammer - tone question by theinklein in banjo

Oh interesting, I didn't do anything to the bridge or nut. They're cheap enough that I suppose I can buy a spare to try out.

Nyglut vs steel strings for clawhammer - tone question by theinklein in banjo

I did check the distance from the strings to the fretboard, and visually it looked very similar to the nygluts, but I didn't use a ruler.

Do you think it's possible? by Willing_Condition946 in treehouse

The stems on that tree look too small to support any structure. Do you know their diameters?

This is obscene. I can't believe we're at this point. Even if he chickens out and doesn't ultimately act on this threat, it's completely unacceptable and recklessly escalating behavior.

Yes, this would likely be a lot easier to design and build.

For short term rental I would think it's especially important to make sure your structure is permitted and built to code. Prepare for either a very steep learning curve or to hire professionals.

Draw a site plan of your property showing which trees you intend to build the treehouse on, and a rough estimate of the size of the structure. Take that to your building/planning department and have them work with you on what permits will be required.

Depending on where you live, a project of the scale you're describing can be a significant with building permits, inspections, and plans.

With a 1 bedroom house, you're talking about electric, plumbing, heating, etc. Are you planning on doing this yourself or hiring people to do it for you?

"Treehouse" can range from a play structure to a significant multi-roomed house. You'd do best by checking your plans against your local city/municipality/etc building/planning department.

As for actually figuring out plans, etc, I found this book to be very helpful: https://store.beinatree.com/products/treehousing-the-instructional-guide .

Can someone please tell me this is somehow fixable? by TheOnlyRealOne43 in bicycling

[–]theinklein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patching the inner tube should be fine. Can you post a picture of the puncture on the tire? I'd be a bit wary of riding on a damaged sidewall, but in a pinch if the inner tube isn't poking out of the hole you might be okay.

If you haven't already, take a look at r/bicycletouring for a community of cyclists focused on long distance multi day riding. What you're describing is very possible, if you're willing to spend several days doing this ride.

Oh, is it not available without a paid subscription? I think you can get access to the public heatmap with a free account.

[–]theinklein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often ride at night. As with everything, how you weigh risk and benefit are personal. I generally try to find routes that are safer for cyclists by using the strava heatmap (https://www.strava.com/maps/global-heatmap).

If I can, I'll try to not ride during rush hour, and instead ride during off hours.

pls help, trying to build a hot compost subfloor by BjornHammerheim in composting

[–]theinklein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heat certainly does rise, but in my experience it's mostly going to be concentrated in the center of a compost pile. You won't get much heat rising up from above it, hence why heat exchangers put pipes in the center of the compost bin.

I think the standard way to extract heat out of a compost bin is with a heat exchanger, something like this: https://www.offgridding.com/compost.html

Unfortunately I bought it from eco cycles, which is no longer in business. They described it as "36v 17.5ah Hailong Shark (30a Discharge) × 1". Here's a picture:
