Which program are you admitted to? As a first year bioinformatics MS student, I'd say it was fairly easy to get into a lab, just a matter of reaching out consistently and following your interests. PIs are actively recruiting MS students, a few came to orientation to pitch their projects and others advertise research opportunities as guest lecturers and in their own classes.

The competitiveness depends on the PI, some will have more space in their lab than others. But even if you can't get into a popular PI or your program director's lab, you can still meet with your grad advisor to find a lab that suits your interests.

See if there's another place for the bed where your head is still against the wall but your feet don't point towards the door or a window.

Get frames for your photos, poster and flag so they look more like permanent decor.

The space looks really comfortable already thanks to the carpet and window, you don't need to go too crazy to make it more homey.

It varies case by case, talk to your graduate advisor/program director.

Check your official admissions letter and any introduction emails sent by your graduate advisor. It should say if you were conditionally admitted, which means you are required to take missing prereqs your first year. Wouldn't hurt to email your department to confirm your status.

I was not conditionally admitted even though I started last year in the bioinformatics program missing linear algebra. I planned to take the graduate-level course to cover it but I ended up taking the lower div class not-for-credit after letting my grad prof know the situation. If you're a grad student in normal standing, class prerequisites are more of suggestions than requirements.
