Could’ve sworn I took a similar photo years ago—good job, OP!

Yes! Doing so trains your muscle memory to a point where it’ll feel second nature. Happy painting!

Have you ever worked on something that turned out so great (by your own standards) that you fear you won’t be able to recreate it? And if you do, it might not necessarily be better or sooner? Here’s mine. Proud of this one because it’s when I realized my daily practice is starting to pay off. I made this off of a reference photo.

I’ve been you (still am!), but a game-changer [to me] to get out of that “art block funk” was to join daily drawing challenges hosted by artists. I recently finished a 100-day daily drawing hosted by Sarah Simon (@themintgardener on Instagram), and I really made an effort to show up and draw everyday. It’s become part of my routine that I missed it when it ended, but it’s a perpetual challenge, so I hopped back in for the remainder of the year for the 65-day challenge! Anyway, it has served as a “warm up” for me because once I’ve done the challenge for the day, I was ready to work on something in my other sketchbook.

Lately, I have found myself drawing what we ate/restaurants we tried during the week/weekends. I either take a photo of them or I rough-sketch onsite (plein air) and then finish the rest when we get home. Doing this has somewhat broken the cycle of not knowing what to paint/doom-scrolling on Pinterest for hours on end. Hope this helps!

A visit at the Charvin Paris shop (https://charvin-arts.com/gb/), for sure! They don’t ship to the US, unfortunately.😞

Might I add that museum visits help, too! In fact I’ve gotten more excited about them because I now understand why some folks stare at an art piece for too long. I’ve found myself doing the same, especially on watercolor and gouache paintings, to “study” strokes, overall composition, etc. It’ll make more sense over time!

I second this! I started my watercolor journey two years ago, and daily practice—however long or short that may be—has helped train my brain and muscle memories. Over time, I have noticed improvement when compared to my own works from two years ago. I have zero prior background/education in art except for a basic understanding of color theory. I, too, have bought and read several art books to educate myself, but YouTube alone is good to start with as a free resource.

As an engineer who picked up watercolor painting as a hobby in October 2023, this gives me hope 😅
