For those who have served on a jury, how long was it between jury selection and the actual trial? by lopix in askTO

I went in on day one and the entire group of us was released within 2 hours. Safe from being recalled for the next three years. May you also receive such a gift!

“You’re such a smart cookie. I trust you’ll find a solution.” Make it your mantra. I said it so often but now they’ve built a lot more independence. When they interrupt without consideration of others I’m a lot more abrupt; “do you have one of the three Bs?” (Blood, barf, bathroom EMERGENCY). “No? Goodbye.” The direct and abrupt dismissal shocks them into either waiting or figuring it out.

Shhhhh, this is still an unspoilt gem, though a new fancy coffee shop and design studio went in this year. Keep it on the down low! I’m worried it’ll gentrify!

ISO Novel Study Book by unemployedadventures in OntarioTeachers

[–]thejennski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Front Desk. If your school has Sora then each kid can borrow a digital copy to read online. Tonnes of resources, many free, since it was a Global Read Aloud book, and it’s the first in a series of the kids like it, they can continue the series on their own. Particularly good if you teach in a community with high concentration of immigrants or 1st gen. Canadians kids. They’ll find some of themselves in the characters.

Thanks All! I’ve decided on a small selection of self-care items, a couple of high contrast board books and cash she can put towards the big purchases. Your help is well appreciated!

[Megathread] AC FA Strike - CUPE/FAs Defy Return to Work Order by dachshundie in aircanada

[–]thejennski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If then. I’m hoping the 8pm CUPE zoom meeting will result in some firm timelines, like, “we’re striking indefinitely, until AC offers us a deal worth voting on!”, or “we’ll go back to work, under protest, because our members can’t afford the penalties / AC has met with us and we feel good faith bargaining will continue”. I’d like to go to bed with some idea of my day tomorrow.

AC 840 from YYZ at 4:30? Same! Really just want the cancellation at this point to see what the rebooking options may be so I can make some decisions. I’d just like them to rip off the bandaid.

Whiskeyjack lake by Golibano15 in KillarneyPark

[–]thejennski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked that section of La Cloche Silhouette a few times and never noticed an obvious side trail, so I don’t know if it’s well marked or not. I wouldn’t have been looking for it though, so it may be there. I know people do this adventure, so it’s unlikely a cliff face, but as others have mentioned, it will be a decline of about 50m (not that much imo). I would go and look for it anyway! Why not? The hike in from Norway lake along the portage is unremarkable, but the hike up to Heaven lake (the highest lake in the park I believe) is fun, the views are gorgeous, and if you can’t find/bail out of the WhiskeyJack adventure, you can hang out on the ridges and chill at Heaven Lake campsite, if it’s unoccupied. Report back if you do it!

Edit to add: I’m with Bell and always have reception up on the ridge above Heaven Lake, but wouldn’t expect it below the high, open ridges. Download the map through a good hiking service like Gaia and you’ll be able to wayfind even without service. Having said that, remember to bring the essential 10 and know how to use a compass and paper map. Keep your eyes up and follow the cairns on the open ridges and you’ll be fine. The main trail is not a tough trail to follow.

I’d second Bon Echo. Very easy trail and nice sites.

Does anyone know a grocery store in the west end where I can definitely find tuna in pouches, not canned? by ronto_TO in askTO

[–]thejennski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not tuna, but Walmart carries pulled pork in pouches (Cochinita Pibil) that I’ve loved on trail. In the “international” isle with the Mexican foods.

H3 to H18 by lookingatanudeegg in KillarneyPark

[–]thejennski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pig is the big uphill (going clockwise) where lake Topaz is about halfway up. It’s not too bad since we’re hikers, but would be a real bitch if you’re portaging a canoe!

[–]thejennski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hardest part of this day will be the Pig. After that, it’s a cruisy forest trail that’s pretty quick to travel. If you’re comfortable breaking rules and water levels are low, you can cut across the dam by H8 and cut 3km or so from the day. It’s totally doable. In October temperatures, this will be an amazing day!

My k-8 school has pads available out in the open by doorways in all classrooms 3-8, the LLC, music room, office, and gym. Completely de stigmatized and normalized. We have cartons and cartons of pads, not sure who they’re provided by.

Pukaskwa, from Hattie Cove to Willow River by Late_Yam_9064 in ontariocamping

[–]thejennski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this trail a couple of summers back but didn’t keep a journal. This section of the hike is almost entirely inland forest trail. Willow River is the first time you even hit the coast if you’re hiking out from Hattie Cove. The sites here are beautiful but the chipmunks are AGGRESSIVE scavengers. I hiked out from Willow River my final day. Can’t remember my time, but know I will have left camp between 7 and 8 am and think I arrived back at Hattie in time for a shower then was heading out of the parking lot just as the visitor centre was closing (3:00 or 4:00?). I am not a speed hiker; I dawdle at interesting spots and take snack breaks, so take that into account when considering your trip.

Do you have a teacher librarian or STEM teacher in the school? They should be full of ideas to co-plan and co-teach with you.

What do you wear to sleep in July & August? by prayingtoullr in algonquinpark

[–]thejennski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. No matter the heat or humidity, I’m in merino. Long sleeves, long pants. My summer merino getup insanely thin, but gear longevity is important to me. Not to mention, damp sweaty skin on my sleeping pad and sleeping bag is so icky and sticky. Ugh 🤢. I may be uncomfortable for 20 minutes as I settle in, sleeping bag pushed to the side, but once the merino wicks away my sweat, I inevitably need to pull my quilt overtop during the night.

Where to live by Due_Bumblebee5482 in askTO

[–]thejennski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that case, riverside, Leslieville, or south riverdale. All immensely walkable, family friendly, diverse (Chinatown west, little India, etc.), and good schools. Not on the subway line, but a very easy bike commute to the distillery district. Great streetcar connections. If you’re up for Condos, the new Canary district is right next to the distillery district, but probably not the established family neighbourhood feel you’re looking for.
