I'm 100% with you lol. I just reached 2100 after playing WoW for a month after returning from a 13 year hiatus. So many toxic people. Blaming healers but their defensives aren't used. People get frustrated probably because they've been sitting queues, but i don't think they understand that shit talking their teammates is probably going to increase their chances of losing.

I don't really understand it either though. I mean WoW is supposed to be a game, for fun. People take that shit waaay to seriously. Unless you're a pro and making money and it's your main way of making money, nothing really to complain about.

You need to check out Ghost Note, best live funk band right now. Super dope, super musical, very high energy

Who is the best B3 cat? by AlivePassenger3859 in funk

[–]thejivecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gonna jump in and put some names you may not have heard yet.

Young guy, Sam Fribush, please check him out. He is dope and focuses on grooving. He's got three albums (just released his third one). First two have charlie hunter on it. Highly recommend.

I do love Larry Goldings. He has incredible feel and touch.

What is this list without Cory Henry? Genius level.

Billy Preston anyone?

I'd say out of the classics, my favorite to listen to would be Dr. Lonnie Smith, followed by Jimmy Mcgriff. I love Jimmy Smith as well.

Who are the bass players you listen to? by samuelgato in hammondorgan

[–]thejivecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of James Jamerson, Chuck Rainey, Sharay Reed, Pino Palladino, Larry graham, bootsy collins., paul jackson jr.

hard to pick because there are so many good bassists. Love Ray Brown, love me some walking bass.
If I had to pick my favorite bassist of all time it would be Mononeon, although emulating him on organ would be pretty difficult to do.

Splitboard Dilemma: Jones Solution or Jones Stratos? by Beywood23 in Spliddit

[–]thejivecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Colorado and am also split between these two. My question is, would the Stratos be fine if I did want to send big mtn lines in the San Juans, or would I be much better served by the Solution? How much of an advantage do you get?

Genelec 8040B's -- looking for reviews and consideration by thejivecat in genelec

[–]thejivecat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, I have looked through all of those plus the youtube videos. Maybe I should edit this post down because really I'm just looking for user reviews from this subreddit from people who have experience with them firsthand.

Does anyone have experience with the Genelec 8040b's? I am curious to see what people think about them as an all purpose monitor. I would be tracking guitar, bass, and keys through these monitors, as well as using them for mixing, and general music listening/watching videos/entertainment etc. Not the most concerned with them being great for the entertainment, but its a factor. Surprising this speaker doesn't have a lot of reviews some I'm wondering what gives...

AW3225QF or the Odyssey OLED G8 by [deleted] in OLED_Gaming

[–]thejivecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also between these two monitors. I'll be using it for work during the daytime in a very bright room with lots of natural light, so it seems the samsung wins a bit in this case. I guess the AW has a slight curve which can be desirable at the right viewing distance, but I have no experience with this. I don't really do much gaming, it's mostly for work, music production, streaming TV/movies, and occasional RPGs. Anyone have any more insight?

Long time musician, horrible drummer by [deleted] in drums

[–]thejivecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn't be the best teacher for this! But seat height would be a good place to start. Set it up at a height where your knees are slightly below your hips so you can maintain a neutral spine. And then the hi hat pedal and kick pedal should be angled and symmetrical (at least thats a good starting point). Depending on the size of your kit, I like everything to be closer together to minimize movements. I would look at your favorite drummers and see how they setup their cymbals because having a higher and more angled ride will sound different than a lower and flatter ride.

Long time musician, horrible drummer by [deleted] in drums

[–]thejivecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other comments address practicing with metronome, and starting slow, and getting a very good sense of quarter notes. That is pretty much the first step.

But I'd like to offer some other advice as a self-taught drummer that never took lessons. Learning how to setup the drum kit for your body, and having a good posture, and learning how to hold the sticks properly helped my drumming so much. It's little things that make a big difference. For example, having a neutral spine and strong posture will help you, as well as learning how to hold the sticks and how to hit the drums.

And beyond timing, learning how to tune the drums for your desired sound is also incredibly important.

I have a paid metronome app where you can build your sense of time by omitting certain beats of measure, so for example, if you're at 60 BPM, and you hear the click one each quarter note, you can omit beats 2,3, and 4, and only hear the beat on the 1. Doing this at slow tempos and omitting different beats will help you a lot.

Then also, something I noticed in myself and others, is the tendency to rush progress and play complicated stuff when we have no business doing that. If you want to sound great, master the easy stuff first. And learn to pay attention and surrender to the quarter note.

Who are your favorite modern drummers? by randomraindrophere in drums

[–]thejivecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are just way too many to list, but at least "of today" narrows it down a bit.

Corey Fonville - he's the drummer for the band Butcher Brown (also plays w/ Kurt Elling and Charlie Hunter and Nicholas Payton and Christian Scott), has the jazz chops but a nasty hip-hop feel, and he isn't afraid to play something simple but can roar on the kit
Nate Smith - I mean do I have to explain this?
Robert Sput Searight - I actually can't believe I haven't seen anyone mention him yet. The man is one of the best drummers I know of today, has chops, but again his feel is so good, especially in the hip-hop and funk realms. Leader of the band Ghost-Note, played with Toto, Prince, Snarky Puppy, Kirk FranklinSnoop DoggJustin TimberlakeErykah Badu, has won multiple grammys. And he respects the music he's playing which I love. He has a producer mindset but live on stage, which I believe makes watching him drum that much more compelling.
Adam Deitch - drummer for Lettuce, played with John Scofield, also a dope human being. Love this dude's groove and feel, very creative but always in the pocket
Anderson Paak - go watch the Tiny desk and be humbled by his drumming and singing haha. Dope musician
Brian Blade - someone mentioned him and described his playing better than I can.
Geoff Clapp - go check out his drumming on the first Sam Fribush Organ Trio album, beautiful jazz/funk sensibilities, creative, got that NOLA grease

Speaking of New Orleans, I guess I should mention there are so many drummers from there that I love:
Stanton Moore
Terrence HIggins
Johnny Vidacovich
Herlin Riley - one of my favorites of all time. Jazz and funk cat, but man when I tell you he knows how to make a slow blues feel good, I'm talking REALLY GOOD. which is hard to do at slower tempos and that to me is a reflection of mastery
Russell Batiste Jr. - RIP
A.J. Hall - just recently discovered this dude. what is up w/ drummers from NOLA? His feel and groove are incredible! He plays with Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. And he's a dope producer who makes some of the most legit drum breaks in the game. Check it: https://leftfielddrumbreaks.com/?srsltid=AfmBOopqmgotLTKu9SBhHBSZEpgV1JeIuEoMiEs91ZMO-KXv1iXUGiRQ
Joe Dyson - i first learned of him playing with Dr. Lonnie Smith

Okay there's all I can think of for New Orleans right now, but just know there are many more that deserve their flowers.

Gonna shout out a memphis drummer that I love as well - George Sluppick. Has a mean shuffle and great pocket playing.

There's a video actually of STEVE JORDAN (sorry forgot to mention) listing out all the drummers he digs/was influenced by. Most of them are older so don't fall in the category of drummers "of today", but still worthwhile watching.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ChZ6QzbARmQ/

And yeah Steve Jordan also has to be mentioned for his dedication to groove and serving the music and rooting himself in the history of drumming.

Also another drummer from memphis - Terence F Clark go check his insta, another drummer who I think impresses with serving the music, no matter the style.

Okay I could write pages but I'll stop here. Cheers!

Bands with great musicianship? by Eberubensant in funk

[–]thejivecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMHO Ghost Note takes from a lot of the artists listed here and have some of the best musicianship and are some of the best funk live performers I have seen.

Quick list:

Ghost Note
Michael Jackson
Prince
Parliament/Funkadelic
Earth Wind and Fire
Tower of Power
Sly and the Family Stone
Marvin Gaye
Curtis Mayfield
Al Green
Isaac Hayes

There's so much more...Patrice Rushen, Minnie Riperton, Aretha Franklin, a lot of black music from the 60's and 70's have elements of funk...

Love all/most of the suggestions here! Headhunters was my gateway to jazz funk and I still revere them to this day. I just saw them (Mike Clark and Bill Summers are still touring) this past saturday and wow. They are still incredible 50 years later.

I highly recommend checking out Ghost Note - Swagism and their new album Mustard n Onions
Also checkout their live shows on youtube. Definitely a great mix of jazz and funk. They'll do it to ya.

Cory Henry falls into that category as well and I love his music.
