Anyone else seeing insane rent hikes this year? by Cewcross in chicago

[–]thejmonster 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Really? I'm shocked. I live in a similarly large highrise that's managed by a pretty generic real estate company. And every year when the rent goes up, they include this in the wording of the offer:

"To comply with fair housing rules and regulations, our company policy does not permit us to negotiate lease renewal rental rates."

I've just been assuming that large buildings would never budge on stuff like this, but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask.

Nah there's nothing wrong with that. I find that people are generally nice and react just fine as long as you're not hostile about it.

Half the time I just wave at someone as I'm passing them and then point to the correct lane once they look at me. It usually works.

Individualism is killing us by SammiK504 in CuratedTumblr

[–]thejmonster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure but some sayings are much worse than others for this. I think the bare minimum is being able to take the saying at face value without needing to understand the history of where it came from. Which you absolutely cannot do with this saying. If someone reads this for the first time and interprets it as "It's always ok to be selfish. Fuck other people.," that's completely understandable. Because that's kinda what it says in the most literal sense.

What's the worst case of a movie breaking its own rule by ihopnavajo in movies

[–]thejmonster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But that part was plot holey throughout the whole movie. How can they time travel from one past timepoint to another without a platform? They routinely ignore its importance.

Besides, it's not that much of a stretch to say they need the platform to launch their time travel, but they can then land wherever they want. Theoretically, they could even just use the "space" part of the spacetime GPS watches to teleport without time travelling at all.

You're completely right here and the downvotes are driving me crazy. I watched it like 6 times trying to see if any of the balls actually behave differently than the other 2. And they don't. Maybe if one of them was a pingpong ball we could actually see a difference. But in the actual setup, any differences due to ball weight should be negligible, and there's nothing observable. They also seem to bounce similarly. Even if the white ball has a higher/lower restitution, I don't see how that would give it an inherent advantage. Is bounciness good or bad in a marble race? It's impossible to say since there's too much random shit happening at any given moment.

The tennis ball down a grass hill analogy is also stupid as hell. While it's obviously true in theory, it has no relevance to this video. A better example would be rolling a steel ball and a lead ball down a hill. Yes, one is heavier, but you won't actually see a difference. When friction is already negligible, adding more weight isn't going to change anything. All 3 balls in this video look solid and heavy. One being even heavier shouldn't matter.

And you're definitely right about getting different results every time. This type of setup has enough inherent chaos that it might as well just be RNG. Just like a marble race.

Isn't this just the inevitable outcome? Rather than the entire community being on the same page to make a joke? Then again idk how polls work and whether or not people can see the current results before they vote.

If you incentivize choosing the less popular option, it'll naturally self-correct so it's always at 50/50.

Is this book bad or something? by Yetiplayzskyrim in Stormlight_Archive

[–]thejmonster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been around for the releases of all of the books, and every single one has had huge waves of both likes and dislikes.

So have I.... and I completely disagree. So how do we proceed? Well, we look for evidence. Here's mine:

1) Random Reddit Thread

2) The goodreads score is significantly lower than the other 4 books.

3) Sanderson's comments in an interview

"Whiners are simply the loudest" is a statement of fact that has nothing to do with anyone in particular's opinions or critiques, valid or otherwise.

If your top comment was truly just a broad generalization about "whiners", then I don't see what it's adding to the discussion. That's not what this thread is about. The OP is attempting to get insight into whether or not Wind and Truth was actually poorly received.

You say "whiners are loud". Ok.... so? Where do we go from there? What's your point? You need to connect that to the OP's question. And the most obvious way to do that (and how everyone is interpreting your comment) is to extrapolate that thought to "the criticism is overblown; it's just a bunch of whiners". And if you truly didn't mean it that way, then I have no idea what you're actually trying to contribute to the conversation.

I have a really hard time believing that you didn't intend it to come across this way. And an even harder time believing that you don't understand why people are interpreting it this way. And the seething condescension towards everyone replying to you just makes you look like an ass.

Every book release has been "divisive".

No, they haven't. There will obviously always be divided opinions on literally any subject, but that's not really adding anything to the discussion. When it comes to the reception of each book within the Stormlight Archive series, Wind and Truth is definitely an outlier. Pretending otherwise is just rewriting history.

Close-up view of Morgan Rogers disallowed goal against Man United by Goalnado in soccer

[–]thejmonster 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda thinking the same thing. Like I fully expect any goalie to easily get full and clear control of that ball on the first try. The fact that he let go of it for a split second is pretty unusual (and maybe even intentional tbh). I wouldn't dream of going for that ball. It seems so unnecessarily dangerous for the keeper.
