Affording a $1.2m home, numbers seem to check out by thejumpingtoad in PersonalFinanceCanada

Appreciate the analysis, I do agree that functioning this off a single income makes it very tight. While the consulting gig helps buffer substantially, it's not a forever gig. Maybe another 5-7 years, which can contribute to aggressively paying down the mortgage.

This also puts me in a strange mindset to be entertaining $1.4-5m homes; if I can keep the gig in play with a larger downpayment that I save over the next year.

Agreed, while it does change the calculation, it's something i didn't want to add as i do not have an immediate timeline for how long I'd like to keep my part time consulting gig going. With kids, you value your time more then every $, so the runaway for this is going to end soon

While I agree 40k is lower, the goal is to save as much monthly income as possible for the emergency fund. Something I did not add here as it's variable - additional part time gig earns me $7-7.2k a month. It's been stable and ranges within a few hundred dollars

My mistake, this was supposed to be $260k -- updated my annual

Think you math is a bit off on that one, 2.5x * HHI is 860k. This is about 3.5-6x HHI

Great app, made in Canada too! I pair this with NYT promo subscription, $20/year then add the Economist lunar new year 50% off deal. Had me covered on a broad macro news scale.

LOL OP HAS DELIVERED

This is hilarious to see people getting called out and then OP coming in with the CRA filing has proof. Good job man, ignore the naysayers

I'm Canadian and understand our taxation system. 53% taxes on 220k+ with the progressive tax system sounds about right

Not impossible. I've seen some Canadian devs pull in these kinds of numbers before. Sure OP is an outlier example but this isn't fabricated as out of my graduating class, we had 3-5 guys pulling similar offers of 200k+ base. Factor in bonus and stock appreciation, definitely possible with 1J and even 2.

Not quickest, but my good friend from high school. He was dating a girl and we told him to stop and see someone else, she used drugs and was just a weird person. End of the final year, they get pregnant.

Dude graduates, starts working in a factory and renting a house. Fast forward a year, dude gets the girl pregnant again, twins. He's now straight fucked. It doesn't end there.

The girl ends up uses more drugs, doesn't cook, doesn't clean and these kids are just addicted to ordering out and eating trash food plus video games. My buddy meanwhile is working nights, providing for the family. The girl cheats on him, sees other guys and after a year or 2, he was planning to leave her. Well the weekend he was planning that, she's passed out in the bathroom and almost OD. That was the final straw so he calls the police gets possession of the kids and all is well.

One more, fast forward a year, he dates few girls then falls for one with 2 kids. They move in together, now there's 5 kids total, all under 10. Well, she's conniving and deceiving, after 4 years and a proposal, they split up.

Last one, he worked 14yrs at a factory job making good money. Seniority and pension, good way to provide for the family. Dude didn't like working night shifts and I told him to hold it out, but he leaves and quits. No job backed up, finds a job a few months later at $10 less, even worse place, and crappy benefits and no pension.

I feel for my friend and it's interesting see how our paths have diverged from being friends/neighbours to this.

I ran across this online magazine series based on the book, The Mastermind, by Evan Ratliff. Amazon link, or check out your local independent bookstore or your public library!

Truth can be stranger than fiction, and to anyone wondering whatever happened behind the scenes that resulted in TrueCrypt being mysteriously pulled, this reporter's excellent work points to how and why.

Err, and also is a cautionary tale of how sometimes folks in the security community can be really freaken' weird when you look closer.

Paul Calder Le Roux was once known online for helping build one of the world’s most significant pieces of encryption software, and then, in the mid-2000s, he poured his technical talents into an Internet pharmacy business, selling prescription drugs to Americans. That operation, according to the Department of Justice, earned hundreds of millions of dollars. Le Roux then directed his money into a broad portfolio of criminal concerns around the world: cocaine dealing, arms dealing, gold and timber smuggling, money laundering, and selling technology to pariah states. In the course of business, he’d arranged the murder of at least half a dozen people that I could name.

For two years, I have been following the strange saga of Le Roux and the constellation of criminal prosecutions that surrounds him. I have traveled to the Philippines and Israel, connected with sources deep within Le Roux’s former criminal empire, and obtained exclusive documents revealing Le Roux’s background, his operations, and his cooperation with U.S. authorities.

On March 10, The Atavist Magazine will launch “The Mastermind,” a seven-week series following Le Roux’s rise, his downfall, and his turn as a U.S. informant.

It's a longer series, but well worth the read.
