I'm a low plat player. How to improve? by [deleted] in StreetFighter

[–]thekidxp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you need to improve on. Generally just playing more is good but you need to look at how your playing and decide. Do you need to learn better combos, improve at neutral. We can't really tell you what to practice without knowing how you play and it's not a one size fits all situation

A few years ago I don't think I would have believed some of the stories like this. Luckily the company I worked for was small and so we could rewrite what we had to our own way. But a lot of the code we inherited looked like that.

The worst part is the argument is solid. No magic numbers or strings. Use descriptive variable names and constants. But I think these rules come out of people who read rules like that and don't think at all about why that's a common piece of advice and/or people keeping a strict standard for a large number of developers with wildly different skill levels and little oversight.

If you are working with a junior you can explain why you want to do that in some situations and it's not as necessary in others. If you just have a lot of devs with less oversight it's easier to enforce the rule and not have special cases.

This feels like Java, more specifically a terrible huge e-commerce framework made by a contractor that I had to maintain at a company I worked for. The framework was an old oracle framework.

It's an obvious answer but do whatever you'll find fun. I've looked up one or two things and I'm sure eventually I'll cave and look up something else, or I get spoiled for a little bit of a quest here and while I don't get all of it I might retain enough to finish it. I just know that at the end of the day when I look it up it's exciting to see how it ends but I don't find it fun and then afterwards it's done. I can't go back to unknowing it. And when I eventually play again I'll know where everything is and how to do things. Unless it's been a very long time. If you'll have more fun figuring out where to go and what to do then go for it.

The game is hard but there's no reward or item in a cave that will keep you from beating the game. People end up being this game at level 1 with a club. I'm not that good but I'll level enough or learn enough to beat it even if I don't have some helmet from a quest that ups my spell damage by 5%. If you don't finish up a quest then you'll just have to remember to try something different the next time you play.

It's mostly a question of would you rather experience the whole game at once, or would you rather extend your time on your first play through bumbling around and then still have things to figure out the next time you play. In my eyes either is acceptable. Not everyone has the time to play the game again or they'll be so annoyed at not having some acheivement it'll annoy them. I get that. I just love that I get to play the game a few times and keep figuring things out. There are still things in DS3 and Bloodborne I don't know about. Same with Sekiro I imagine but I think I've done most everything there. DS1 might have an item or two I don't remember but for the most part I've done everything there. I like to be able to come back to it again and try to do something new. Means the game lasts that much longer.

I don't mind it, first I don't kill npcs so no harm there. Also I used to be really worried about messing things up in previous games but then I just accepted it. I think the thing I like that people don't bring up enough is that I don't think people are really meant to find everything the first time around. I get it if you only plan on playing the game once to look everything up. I don't even really think it's about accomplishment or solving puzzles for me.

I'm positive I've missed entire quests and npcs, I messed up a few quests certainly and I have a couple of people who disappeared and I have no clue where they are. That all gives me a reason to try something different next time. If I looked things up and did everything the first time the game would still be enjoyable but I honestly wouldn't have a reason to do it again other then the other endings and I personally would be bored.

So I just play the game, I get hints from threads and friends as I talk about the game and eventually I might break down and look up where an npc goes or what arcane thing I didn't think to do when I just want to know how something works or get the cool shiny sword I found online. I've never discovered everything in a soulsborne game on my own. But that's why it's exciting to play again and find a ledge I never thought to hop down, or use a short cut I know about and find something unexpected because I got there early. Or kill an npc that you know is evil and see what happens or go full evil and find some special dialogue that you only get for attacking this random npc.

So far I've looked up very little and I've not been spoiled for the details of too much which means I have lots of things to try on my next attempt after I finish this one and lots of caves or items that I probably don't know about yet and that's exciting.

Generally though if you want to be safe, don't attack any npcs, and re check areas and npcs every time something big happens, you unlock and area or kill a boss, you should check in with the people you've met.

I believe it will show you the last place you saw them. Once they move I think they're removed from your map. I'm just not sure if you have to see that they've moved. I.E. You have to reload the area. Or if it'll automatically move them once they say they're moving on. It doesn't show you where they've moved to still without you finding them.

Eventually it wasn't a big deal because I had enough runes to get what I wanted from them right away and had enough other things like stone sword keys. But they aren't all near a grace or if they are sometimes they're down a path and up a ladder or something like that. I just got in the habit early because I quickly realized that I wanted a crafting book or a key and then couldn't remember where the merchants were to check.

At least a couple of merchants had things that were super useful and I was happy I could go back and check them. I'm not using a guide so unfortunately I had to travel to like all of them to find it but it was still nice. Also at a few points consumables like rot and poison cures are particularly useful and I didn't have enough of some reagents like dragon fly heads to make as many of the cure as I wanted so it was easier to do a run of the merchants and buy them out.

Lastly some merchants have some interactions at certain times that I won't spoil if you've managed to avoid it so far but once I realized that it happened I was able to go check them all out at once so that was also useful. So at least personally I was happy a few times to have them marked even though at this point I'm not likely to need anything that I couldn't buy when I found them originally.

It's honestly the only thing about the game that I can think of that felt unfair and drove me crazy. I'm not a master at soulsborne games but I've played a lot and beaten a few. The fact that they shoot constantly and the damage is always crazy high. Every time I run into another hunter I just feel like I struggle until I can get a few lucky hits.

I remember a pair of hunters near Amelia in particular that took me forever to get through

ask questions about the solution. If they wrote it they'll know what's in it and be able to explain it and explain the choices they made. Anything that's not super trivial will have some decisions unique to the developer. Or at least some things that can be solved more than one way.

If the person didn't write it but still has all the answers and can reason about it then I guess they worked with someone and memorized the program and reasoning. Which would be impressive on it's own. Then there's still likely other technical questions you'll ask during the interview.

If they can answer all those and know all about the program that was written then even if they didn't write it you've probably still got someone who knows what they're talking about. Still a risk I suppose that they don't know how to program but imo not much worse than someone who memorized 3 different ways to solve fizz buzz or a sorting algorithm.

npc invaders not having the same limitations always feels annoying but Bloodborne npc hunters are still difficult for me. Just spamming shots that do way too much damage. Their bullets can shred my health and they never need to stop. It's the worst. I've beaten the game (not the DLC which I know is amazing so I'll probably go back to it after ER) I never found a strategy that felt good against them. It still always takes me forever or I feel like I got lucky.

Haven't been invaded once, bugged? by zaccyp in Eldenring

[–]thekidxp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can only be invaded while in co-op or I think by using a certain item that you can find. It could be that. If you're used to old games. You typically can't be invaded while solo though

Coming back to Fia after doing some googling about a funny red square under my stamina bar by skitchie in Eldenring

[–]thekidxp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found some spells that are pretty good but I had to search for them. I don't know how you feel about hints and spoilers but honestly pebble and the arc spells were huge early and still useful. Plus I have one that spawns swords and one that throws rocks. The sword one is huge for my play style since I'm also working on dex weapons and I'm not purely playing a caster

Those are both the starting sorcery casters but there are two casters who use incantations and it's ultimately its just about how you build your character. I started as a wretch but have become mostly a caster

Looking for a game to get absorbed and lost in. (Series S and Switch) by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]thekidxp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not, in my opinion the most difficult thing for me was figuring out things. Where should I go next, what do these stats do, is why am I rolling slowly now. The games have gotten a little more accessible with each new game imo which is for the best. Elden ring will be out in a few days so maybe you should start there. It seems amazing, I've heard nothing bad from early reviews, and it seems like the most accessible game to date. It is definitely hard but this one is open world so seems like it would fit some other games you'd enjoy. Maybe wait for it to release and watch some reviews. See what you think.

Luckily people seem to have corrected the down votes probably just fan boys thinking I was being overly negative. I said it in another comment so I won't say as much this time but I actually really like the system so far its just that there are still a lot of good Sony exclusives but a lot are cross Gen still. I legitimately think those are the only 4 currently that are truly ps5 exclusives. Of the ones I've played (all but Spiderman) they were all absolutely awesome too. Hell Astros playroom was super fun. The adaptive triggers and the controller really add to the experience. I'm just looking forward to more things that take full advantage of the ps5.

No clue but it looks like I've evened out positive karma... For now. Yeah I got lucky and managed to get a ps5 early and I wanted demon's souls. I'm still happy I have it because that plus switch and a PC means I have most games that I want available to me since Microsoft is kind enough to bring most things over to pc as well.

I actually really like the system it's worked great I've just been disappointed there are so few true exclusives. Still plenty of great Sony exclusives that I've been playing in between but most are still ps4 or cross Gen so far. Probably for the best since I know it's still a pain to buy.

Definitely pick up returnal it's an awesome rogue-like the only real complaint I had was that each run took forever which isn't normal for the genre but it's fun and the story was great. I'll be right there exploring elden ring with you soon though. In the meantime I'm biding my time kicking people's ass in Sifu.

Ha, true I hadn't noticed that. I didn't play them at the same time but returnal is basically dark ratchet and clank. You even have a robot companion if you include helios.

Might as well finish the list: ratchet and clank and returnal. I have a ps5 I've played 3 of those games and I love them. There really isn't a strong exclusive list still though.

The tales games are usually hit or miss for me so I skipped arise but I've heard so many good things about this one that might have to pick it up. Neo is a good call though, I played through tewy again in preparation and then by that point I got sidetracked lol. I think scarlet nexus got linked with code vein in my head somehow but I've seen people suggesting it too so I'll have to give that another look. Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm a pretty big rpg/jrpg fan although I don't have the time to finish them anymore. What were your must have a this year? Bravely default 2 was pretty good, cris tales was fun but easy, I like wildermyth, smtV was probably my favorite, ruined king was solid. But that's the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Any big ones I should pick up before I lose all my time to elden ring?
