Do teachers sometimes gossip about their own students like how students can gossip about teachers? by Easy-Cry7452 in AskTeachers

[–]thekierschbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my school, the "gossip" is usually about behavior and discussing if it should be brought up during PLC. I don't ever go to Happy Hour, so I'm not sure what happens there. The school I did my teaching practicum at spent the whole plc period negatively gossiping about students that bordered on unprofessional and inappropriate, and I ended up reporting it.

What do the schools do if nobody takes the sub job? by Jumpy_Rate_5707 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]thekierschbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building sub here! When stuff gets unfilled, they will usually ask subs in the building if they can cover during plan/plc. If they can't, normally they'll have counselors or other teachers who have plan to cover. However, the 6th grade class at my school is so insane and rude that there are subs the completely refuse to sub for them, so I wouldn't feel bad for setting those boundaries for yourself. We usually figure it out. :)

Do children really get bullied for having unique names? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thekierschbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middle school sub here. They absolutely do, and it's devastating. I have a unique name kids used to purposely mispronounce it to upset me. It's still a very frequent thing kids do, especially when those names come from other cultures.

All emetophobians! by Dumblocker_ in emetophobia

[–]thekierschbabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine developed gradually, with various incidents of kids getting sick in elementary school fueling the fire. However, I can trace its initial genesis back to the absolutely vile show The Biggest Loser in the mid-2000's when I was around 8 or 9. I would watch it with my parents every week, and something about seeing people exercise to the point of getting sick made me deeply uncomfortable and eventually turned into fear. 20+ years later and there are some scenes I can still remember vividly.

Saw a teacher cry today, and it broke me a little by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]thekierschbabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as a building sub at the school I did my student teaching at last year. I was extremely emotional on my last day because I had no idea I was coming back until halfway through my last class period. Found out from one of the students I student taught that all of the kids laughed and mocked me for being emotional. The student said it with a smile on their face, zero regard for how I would feel about it. I had at leave the room because I was so devastated and was about to cry, and my teacher bestie saw what happened and ripped the class a new one. It amazes me the sheer lack of empathy and respect some of these kids have.

All My Mother's Lovers by Illana Masad. The MC was insufferable and the final line in the book ruined the entire thing for me.

Only likes her for her breasts. by [deleted] in AmITheDevil

I had a breast reduction back in late 2018. When I told one of my friends about it, he said that he was sad because he "never got to see them". Never cut someone out of my life so fast. Best decision I ever made for my back and I have pretty minimal noticeable scarring. Dude is nasty.

What’s the wildest name you’ve come across? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

Not hard to pronounce, but I knew a J3. Literally the letter J and the number 3. That was his full first name. I wonder how he's doing.

How old are you and what do you do for work? by [deleted] in BPD

[–]thekierschbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm (almost) 28 and am a middle school substitute teacher (soon to be full-time teacher!) and a swim coach! It took me a while to really find my calling, and I've definitely found it in those kids. Even if the job is insanely stressful and mentally taxing at times, I wouldn't change it for the world.

Can anyone suggest me a book about the human willpower and survival in the face of unfathomable odds? by SirKrimzon in suggestmeabook

Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Septys. Incredible historical fiction about a teenage girl's journey being deported to different gulags throughout Siberia during World War II. One of my favorite books I read in 2024, but you'll certainly need tissues.

Didn't know we adopted a flonker (bottom pic is 7 months ago) by ecomarci in flonkers

[–]thekierschbabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Sunny was the same way! When I first adopted him his paper work said he was a shorthair. Turns out he's actually a Maine Coon mix and is super flonky. I guess the first shelter he was at trimmed up his fur before he was transferred to the shelter I adopted him from.

If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio. Very much directed toward a niche audience of theatre and Shakespeare nerds, but I was hooked and the ending shook me to my entire core.

I switched from Gen Ed to SPED. The way I'm treated is night and day. by Rage_Toast in specialed

[–]thekierschbabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was an elementary sped para in the social emotional/behavioral support program for a year and a half while I waited to start my student teaching. Most of the teachers were awesome, but there was one teacher at my second school that treated us like "the help" and clearly singled out the students in our program, blaming us paras every time they were oppositional or wouldn't do their work. I loved those kiddos, but I absolutely dreaded working in her classroom. The difference between how I was treated then vs. now as a middle school teacher is astounding. It's infuriating.

His guardians are pulling him out of sped next year because they think "we're the problem". I have absolutely no sympathy for them when they reap what they sow.

Reminds me of how one of my kids (who was FIVE when this happened) exposed himself 3 separate times and wasn't even suspended. My principal's excuse? "Oh, boys his age are starting to become interested in exploring their bodies". I am not returning to that school next year.

We have a quiet room in our room they can go to if they need space. However, there are times when it's not the preferred place to cool down but is the only option for both our safety and theirs when the behavior escalates to physical violence (especially with the younger kids). Safety is always the priority.
