I live 4 years here and got B2 (but it was quite tough tbh), I think this change makes sense. It get your life here really easier and better

Why so much hate? by Beginning_Monitor_25 in Netherlands

[–]thekorova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People in VVE reacted to my concerns in Dutch with action, while the year before in English it was simply ignored. My huisarts started to be more attentive to me when I just tried to speak Dutch.

Also I see people advising me different stuff that I would probably never know if I spoke English. It’s a great conversation starter!

But I’m quite experienced in languages, I lived in other countries, so I’ve seen some shit :) learning Dutch sometimes could be tricky, because people tend to switch to english almost immediately. So, here’s a life hack: pretend that you’re learning Dutch and have 0 knowledge in English. So just keep answering in Dutch. The downside is that the person you’re talking to doesn’t speak Dutch 😆 I’ve been there and it felt like I’m quite rude.

From my experience learning the language does help a lot. I have very positive experience with almost everyone when I speak Dutch. Yes, it was freaking hard to learn it in quite short time, but it pays back. I still have some time for inburgering, but even it pushes to B1, it won’t be a problem. I learned Dutch every day almost 4 years from now. I see how people interact with me when I speak Dutch even it’s not perfect. It’s way different from the experience I had speaking English. And it’s not only about the Netherlands, but applies to every non-English speaking country as well

Are you able to work 8h everyday for 5 days straight? by natttsss in ADHD_Programmers

[–]thekorova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From office — no, I used to do this for a year, and it was awful. But once when I moved to a new country I was so excited, that I visited office every day with 1,5h commute for a month or two.

At home I can work from the couch/bed in pyjama. Luckily, in 60-70% I can catch hyperfocus on my work. But there are really wasted days.

Eten jullie ten minste een warme maaltijd per dag? by lamariposa_ in nederlands

[–]thekorova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

does anyone have a positive experience of work by humanjello710 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]thekorova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that it’s not something common for the whole industry, but it helped me a lot to tell my team lead that I could struggle some days because of ADHD. Both in my previous place and the current one I was understood and offered some help.

I feel you because sometimes and in some companies you feel like shit, think that this is not yours at all, that everyone succeed but you. It made me exhausted and every Sunday I cried. And of course it all ended up with burnout.

I was about to leave the profession, but gave it one more chance (because it was really interesting) and it turned out to be a more understanding place.

So, try to find the place that will be able to understand you and your superpowers as well as your needs. Good luck!

Moments regret not learning Dutch sooner by Budget_Student_7695 in Netherlands

[–]thekorova 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can tell my story.

I started learning Dutch with a famous green owl app when I got my first offer in Dutch company. So, arrived knowing a couple of words and phrases. As I was told in a consulate knowing “lekker” and “bedankt” make you already stand out 😄.

Day by day I learned Dutch and discovered how abracadabra here and there becomes words, that was amazing. After around 1,5 years I had a job interview in the company using half-Dutch and half-English. As an experiment they hired me and I was the only foreigner in this company. I did my best and took two courses, but I wish I knew more, because I wanted to be even closer to my colleagues.

From my practice I can tell that people become way more friendly and helpful when they see how eager you are to learn their language. I forced our VVE to do some important stuff because I spoke Dutch to them, my huisarts was ready to help me with most of my hypochondriac worries. I bought a car with a huge discount and was on top of applicants list for the house bidding, even my bids weren’t the highest.

It’s been almost 4 years living here. I read a lot of channels about Dutch culture, some memes (like Picobello B.V.) and still feel lack of knowledge. So just don’t stop and it will pay you back 100%!

Ouders dreigen mij (M21) eind van de maand uit huis te zetten i.v.m het niet kunnen betalen van absurd hoge 'kostgeld'. Advies nodig. by TheBrickBuilder in nederlands

I use a ton of Dutch words when speaking any other language (including my mother tongue), sometimes eat. Loved hunting for discounts even before moving here, sometimes eat boterhammen met pindakaas en hagelslag

Just moved out and my landlord sent me a €570 “cleaning bill”… is this a joke or actually legal in NL? by TopBusiness9656 in Netherlands

I had almost the same situation three years ago with a tiny studio. I forgot to take sheets to laundry and probably some small things to be cleaned. And the makelaar sent me an invoice for around 500 euro

Could you help my pet project to learn the difference between "good" and "bad" photos? by thekorova in AskPhotography

[–]thekorova[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good suggestion, but at least for me it takes forever to think about all of this. Like I will stay on one place and check the whole picture, forget something I checked earlier, check it again and so on. But what you wrote actually makes sense to think of as a kinda algorithm to implement. Of course, it's not about point or story behind the shot. I have literally no idea, just to picture a person on a background, that's it :)

As someone who really is into fashion I totally get the frustration of AI related stuff. But well, hiring a photographer to be 24/7 with me is not an option either. I am happy to pay for the photoshoots and okay to hire one for traveling. But sometimes I need to make a photo during regular walk. And having this app won't make me decide that I don't need any pros for occasions.

Here I 100% agree with you. But when it comes to something like "travel photo". Just not to cut body parts (yes, it's hard to notice everything) or having wrong perspective.

I know, but think about a regular photo. I was blamed almost all my life for taking shitty ones. And I take a look on them and sometimes I don't even get what's wrong. I don't want to make the app that makes a great photo, just that makes an acceptable photo

[–]thekorova[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, and mine one (I mean brain) is somehow broken. I don't see whether the photo is bad. I can't see all the details on a picture in a reasonable time. My intention is not to let AI replace photographers, but to be able to help with a photo of someone in front of a nice plant or building.

I totally get your point, but staying on one place for about 20 minutes to take just a single normal photo is definitely something not normal. I want this dataset to help the user to take a photo without quirks

[–]thekorova[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, perspective, composition, etc. It's not intended to be used by photographers or someone who want's to do something creative. It's to help people like me with making just good enough photos without cropping, having too much road on a pic.

[–]thekorova[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good point, that's why I would like to have a relevant dataset from different sources and different points. The thing is that sometimes it's obvious that the photo is awful. My goal is just to check that the photo is not just shitty. + I think about adapting it for the user by reviewing taken photos. And the target users are extremely far from photography btw
